The Merchant Team Challenge: More Fun on the Pro Tour

Make the most of your Pro Tour experience through the Merchant Team
Challenge! The top team in the Challenge will win valuable prizes,
including a whole display of Antiquities(R), and the sponsoring retail
store will receive special coverage in The Duelist(R) as well as other
exclusive Pro Tour merchandise.

The Merchant Team Challenge is simple to enter. Arrange to represent your
favorite game store in the dozens of open events that take place during the
Pro Tour weekend. While the pros are going at it, sanctioned and
unsanctioned tournaments take place round the clock. You and the other
players from your store (your "team") accumulate points by finishing at the
top in these open events. At the end of the weekend, the top three players
on each team pool their accumulated points into a team total. The team
with the most points wins, and the one with the next-highest total takes
second place. Special prizes are awarded to the top three players on each
of the two winning teams!

Prizes for the Merchant Team Challenge are as follows:

First Place

For the whole team: Customized T-shirts
Non-English-language Magic: The Gathering
Merchandise vouchers

For the team's top three: All team prizes
Picture in The Duelist
One display of Italian-language Legends(R) and
one display of Antiquities (split among all
three players)

For the sponsoring store: Special feature in The Duelist, including
photos, written by the crack Duelist staff
writers
Unique Pro Tour merchandise, including Pro
Tour
shirts, travel bags, and deck packs ($500
retail
value)

Second Place

For the whole team: Customized T-shirts
Non-English-language Magic: The Gathering
Merchandise vouchers

For the team's top three: All team prizes
One display of Italian-language Legends (split
among all three players)

For the sponsoring store: Pro Tour merchandise kit ($300 retail value)

Players are required to register at the beginning of the Pro Tour weekend
and will receive a list of all tournaments that count towards the Merchant
Team Challenge. Players are welcome to participate in as many of the
Sealed-Deck, Classic, and Standard tournaments, plus other variants, as
they want. There is no limit to the number of players on a team, but
remember -- only the point totals of the top three players on the team will
count toward determining the final team standings.

Points will be awarded to players who finish in the Top 8 of any applicable
tournament. The Top 2 in each tournament receive three Merchant Team
Challenge (MTC) points, the third- and fourth-place finishers each receive
two MTC points, and the fifth- through eighth-place finishers each receive
one MTC point.

So round up your most avid Magic-playing friends and come out to the Pro
Tour on your store's behalf. You might bring home some valuable prizes,
and your store might end up gracing the pages of The Duelist. The Merchant
Team Challenge kicks off at Pro Tour-Los Angeles. Look for more Challenges
in New York in June and at the World Championships in Seattle!

Hey Adam,

Why, oh why is Wotc having the Pro Qualifier for Paris on Saturday
morning instead of Sunday morning, when all the top 64 players not making
the top eight can participate. Granted, half the top 64 will qualify for
Paris, but half will not. The timing of this event appears........odd.

Please elaborate,

I feel the need to clarify my statement. Half the top 64 in the Pro
Tourney happening that day on Saturday will qualify, not half the top 64
from the Qualifier. What I'm upset with is this: If I make the top 64
on Saturday, but don't come in the top 32 (securing a spot for the next
pro tour: Paris), I'd like a shot while I'm there in Long Beach to
qualify. But I can't because the qualifier is on Saturday (scheduling
problem). Why not just have the qualifier on Sunday when more people can
attend (Players from the previous day)? Doesn't make any sense to me.

The timing of this event appears........odd.

Consider it incentive for players not in the main event to travel to LA for
the open events.

Are you sure that the players meeting for Seniors is thursday morning at
8:30 am? Whats the point of having the meeting in the morning when
competition doesn't start until friday morning. I remember at previous
pro tours the players meeting were on the night before the competition,
not the morning.

A "fix" was released by Charles Stanley. It's at 8PM not 8AM.
