Here are the results of the tournaments that I ran at Origins, along with
complete decklists w/comments from the final table in each event. (Sorry
about the delay, but this was more information than I thought it would
be, and compiling it in a useful format for the newsgroup took longer
than I thought.)

NOTES:

The number of Princes at Origins this year was quite high; this fact, as
well as several "name" players showing up, caused the competence and
competition levels to be quite high, IMHO. There was almost no reason
for a judge to be there, except to call time, and to explain Rotschreck,
of course. I felt quite satisfied when they understood the explanation.
Some of the players involved even went so far as to state how great the
card was now that they understood it. They then proceeded to trade me
several good cards for some of my Rotschrecks. :)

As The Lasombra has stated previously, there wasn't really any specific
deck types at either tournament, but it seemed to me that people were
playing a wide variety of decks that may no longer be valid choices after
Final Nights becomes legal.

In the Friday tournament, one of the new players, having come from the
M:tG area to play, played 1 round, then, thinking it was similar to a
M:tG tournament, never came back. (This was the only explanation we
could think of for her compete invisibility after the first round. We
sent scouts out to track her, but no trace was ever found.)

In the Friday tournament, Madman played 3 rounds, then had to go, so John
Fleming was allowed to play in the finals. He was quite happy with that
change of events.

In each tournament, David McCarty offered 2 packs of Ancient Hearts for
the player in last place after the 3rd round was finished, who had played
in all 3 rounds. Several players talked about this idea, and we all
think it would become a good idea if it became an "unofficial" tournament
rule. It certainly will be at any tournament where David McCarty is
there! :)

The Lasombra, after having staggered into Columbus at 1:20am on Saturday
morning, was pleased that he was the only person all weekend able to stop
Bernie's 'Origins Power', even though the 1 table where Bernie sat with
The Lasombra, they were cross-table, and John Bell swept. :)

Speaking of Bernie, he was in The Zone all weekend. I'm not sure if
anyone really noticed it, but he had that look in his eyes every time I
talked to him. Bernie: wear shades at GenCon! :)

In one of the tournaments, there was this crazy 5-player table where 2
War Ghouls were being traded back and forth with the cross-table "ally"
each turn via Succubus Club, because both players were the only non-bleed
decks at the table and believed from the outset that they were doomed
unless they beat down every other minion with the War Ghouls. The
Succubus Club was always given to the other player "in exchange" for the
2 War Ghouls, i.e. I begin my turn w/Succubus Club, I give my cross-table
ally the Succubus Club in exchange for the 2 War Ghouls. The funny thing
was that, after receiving the 2 War Ghouls, the acting Methuselah would
then untap the 2 War Ghouls (since it was "still" the untap phase) and
start serving up War Ghoul beatings. Both of the co-operating players
thought this was correct, and the other 3 players at the table never said
anything, and since I was watching another table for practically the
whole round (they kept asking questions and "missing" uptap- and
master-phase effects), the entire match was played that way. Later,
after I had heard what had happened, one of the players involved in the
trading said to me that she said at the table that she thought calling
the judge to figure out when the War Ghouls untapped would be the right
thing to do (since the 3 bleed decks were falling down really hard at
this point), but the 3 bleed deck Methuselahs told her not to bother, so
she said "OK," and kept beating the crap out of them with the War Ghouls.

The closest we came to "out-of-game considerations" was the last round of
the Qualifier where, at a 4-player table, David Tatu (HI TATU!) somehow
used his Presence and Dominate abilities to convince the whole table that
the best thing for them to do would be to withdraw, so everyone would
receive a VP. I think Tatu was the last player to withdraw. ;)

Speaking of withdrawing, Noal McDonald and 2 other player agreed to
withdraw with, like, 6 minutes left in the round. They were the last
table, and when I heard about it I went over to their table, only to see
all 3 of them furiously untapping all their cards, discarding, redrawing,
and passing their turn to the next Methuselah. There were no turn-based
effects in play, so I mercifully stopped them from destroying their cards
and had them end the round.

Props to Jay Kristoff: after taking over Columbus just a few weeks ago,
he demonstrated the 5th tradition and bought me an enormous pizza; after
a few hours, he demonstrated the 2nd tradition and kicked me out of his
house (he had to go to work). :)

A couple really decent LARPers came up to me and suggested that, in the
future, Origins' and GenCon's tournaments be held so that they end at
~7pm, so that the LARP community can participate in both VTES and their
LARP activities.

The Sealed Deck tournament had fewer players than I originally thought
(we only had 10), and 3 players dropped after the first round so we were
unable to continue; therefore the tournament became unsanctioned. In
policing the draft, we had a box at a table of SUPPOSEDLY 2nd edition
Sabbat War that had 20+ packs with either 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14, 15, or
16 cards. It became interesting for me to attempt to "correct" the
packs. Strangely enough, that wacked box had 2 Disarms and MANY copies
of Beast, Leatherface (which were defensively drafted against Noal.)

THE Andrew S. Davidson decided to join us for the draft, and it was nice
to see him again.

Speaking of Andrew (esp. how he likes to analyze cards in decks) there
were a LOT of Suddens and DIs in the decks, especially at the top. There
was also a preponderance of Succubus Club. Tatu, Robyn, Mr. Joe
Churchill, and I spoke until late into the night each evening about
things, and something that kept coming up was how banning Succubus Club
might be something to revisit. Our reasoning was that, if cards are
banned (or erratta'ed) mainly because they are undercosted, then Succubus
Club should possibly be banned, since it has the possibility of being
AMAZINGLY undercosted. Then again, it may have just been all the blood
wine!

On a final note, thanks to LSJ's wife for deciding to have a little
tykester, so LSJ could be a homebody and decide that I could be given the
opportunity to run the events at Origins. It was great fun, and everyone
kept coming up to me and saying how I was doing a good job, which made me
feel really, really good. Again, thank you Scott, and I would be happy
to substitute for you any time you'd like. Any openings at WW? 8-)

At least until I run out of packs to donate.

I guess I was too beat down to look up that high. ;)

Excellent Idea. We really need to encourage the LARP players to play
VTES.

Still would mean starting the tourney about noon, or even 11am. Which
would be perfectly fine with me. I was waking about 9am each day, and
after coffee ect, I was fully ready to play by 11.

Did he ever fine if shadowfist decks?

Nope and that's a shame as they were my theme movie decks which were
lots of fun and took a while to build: Pulp Fiction, The Matrix, Big
Trouble in Little China and Forever Knight. The latter even featured
Hopping Vampires.

The lessons are:

1. Travel light. I find this impossible myself and well deserve the
title Mr Suitcase.

2. Always keep your bags in your personal space. I tossed mine aside
when we moved to escape the vicious draft from the air-con.

3. Don't use Ultra-Pro shoulder bags as they are too anonymous and
advertise the presence of potentially valuable rares.

4. Don't play in the WotC area alongside Magic players. They have
the morals of a mink and won't even think that you might have cards
for another game in your bag.

5. Cultivate a good Zen attitude like the best Kung Fu masters. The
glass is already broken ...

A good plan which might get you more female players. My eye was
caught by a Sailor Moon tournament which seemed to be mostly women and
I bet that Magination had more than its share too. VTES is never
going to score highly as a cute game, so you need to make time for the
goth element to join in, instead.

Sorry to be one of the drop-outs but I was ousted first, as usual, and
really wanted to go hunt for my stolen cards and get some sleep. I
had supposed that the draft was just a pick-up event - I didn't
realise that it was the real thing. I was quite enjoying squeezing
the life out of The Lasombra until Noal descended on me from a great
height and put me to bed. And who was that guy who came across table
at me? I must be doing something right to get three of you going for
me.

>It was great fun, and everyone kept coming up to me and saying how
>I was doing a good job

Hear, hear. And you're still doing a good job as a 727-line con
report of this quality is no mean feat. And thanks for the Madness
too - they will go nicely with the Monocle that I bought from a
singles dealer <grin>.

As a LARPer if I had made the finals there would have been issues (however,
since I came in second to last it worked out OK... too bad I couldnt have
won those PHAT Ancient Hearts packs). After I got smashed (and yelled at,
and danced at, etc) in round two I had plenty of time to run back to the
hotel room, change into my Armor, and get back in time to get smashed in
round 3. (at a really cool table with the other 0 point guy, John with his
neat POT/ani deck, and a really really neat Francois Villon Chimestry deck)

The LARP was so good this year that I did not want to miss even a moment of
it. That is not generally the case.

Thanks to Aaron for popping down to the LARP to tell me of Bernie's Triumph.
When he's the next North American Champion I can say I knew him when......

Not counting Aaron or Jay out, mind you....

I have found that Magi Nation is a perfect feeder game for new Vampire
Players, It uses minions with variable levels of counters that you
keep track of. It uses minion on minion interaction, and it uses the
counters off your mage to create the creatures you play. It is a
perfect game to lure players away from to play VTES. I hope this
helps.

I never really thought of mink as having a particularly immoral
character. :) Perhaps weasel?

This isnt just good advice about card games... its advice for life.

Sorry to hear they never showed up again Andrew.

policing the draft, we had a box at a table of SUPPOSEDLY 2nd edition
Sabbat War that had 20+ packs with either 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14, 15, or
16 cards. It became interesting for me to attempt to "correct" the
packs. Strangely enough, that wacked box had 2 Disarms and MANY copies
of Beast, Leatherface (which were defensively drafted against Noal.)>>

Yeah, it was sad that I had to drop out, as I really like Draft, but we had
only just finished the first round and it was 1:00am (and after three
consecutive nights of 4 hours of sleep, the old weakling that I am simply gave
out). I figured that there were at least 5 guys left for another round, so that
was at least another game.

The draft was excellent, though--10 packs of SW works really well, and we all
made fairly cohesive decks (and got good booty as well). Again, I really like
draft, but simply couldn't survive a second round at that point.

(hey Kevin, you still have those Disarms?)

Weasels got a bad rep from Wind in the Willows but I like them. For
my mink influence, see the fine SF story, "Mother Hittons Littul
Kittons" by Cordwainer Smith.

Gah. Those giant weasels certainly gave me a pounding in a D&D 3rd game
recently. Damn things.

Thank god for the local halfling tribe is all I can say.
