Only 11 Methuselahs turned up for Saturday’s gig at Second Byte, and that
meant two tables of 4 and one of 3 during the heats, which was a bit
weird. Still, we were quorate and had some nice games, and although I
didn’t get to play against absolutely everyone I nearly did, so for a
change can give a reasonable summary a la James Coupe of who was playing
what.
William Lee won the tournament with a Malkavian-antitribu derangement
deck, of which more [ie a complete listing] at the end of this message.
I was second with a virtually-identical clone of Stuart Pieloch’s "It’s
all about the flow" mainly anti-ventrue dom/for/aus deck from the recent
Atlanta tournament. Instead of 8 Redirections I packed 4 Redirectionsand
4 Deflections; otherwise, as they say, qv. In a more combat-heavy
environment it would have done better, plus I probably picked the wrong
place to sit in the final. Nevertheless, a deck that can get 1 or more VPs
in every game of a tournament IS good.
Also in the final were:
Jon Cooper, playing a Stanislawa bleed, combat and takeover deck. If you
blocked he played Dawn op, Drawing out the Beast and then Earth Meld; then
he grave-robbed your vamp. If you didn’t block he bled for shedloads.
Nice!
Pierre Rebstock also played a Stanislawa deck, indeed THE Stanislawa deck
he’s been playing for a while now.
Sid Sidhu played a presence bleed, bloat and anti-vote deck. He actually
managed to pull off theKindred coercion/Elder Kindred Network trick to
oust Mark Baxter in the last heat. He had at least one Archon
Investigation in there, as I learned to my cost in the final. But this
deck was really built for a different metagame.
The following didn’t make the final:
Garry Scarlett played a big cammie vote deck, and got about 2 VPs with it.
Niki Sehmi played the Undead Persistence/Trap/big DOM bleeds deck. Nice
deck, again, but awfully vulnerable to SCE. Garry and Nick tied 2-2 in the
runners-up game [Alex and Mark also played in this].
Mark Baxter played his stealthy presence bleed, bloat and vote deck. He
also got some VPs with it.
Anam Sheader played her rapidly-improving Lasombra
does-a-bit-of-everything deck. No VPs but lots of fun!
Alex from London played the only rush-combat deck – Bru/!Bru pot/cel and
quite nice, but probably needed a shade more presence-bleed to force the
blockers and/or rush.
John Keech played a presencebleed and vote deck and suffered BADLY from
contesting with Sid, Mark and Garry.
I had the most VPs going into the final [9] and got 1 in the final [Sid]
which was not bad considering that I lost a vamp to Archon Investigation
and was reduced to 1 pool. But then I was up against Will who was VERY
strong [Sid had been spending all his time defending against me and trying
to shift the Deranges about so that he could take his princely actions].
So Will got all the other VPs, for a final total of 9. I wasn’t at all
unhappy about Will winning, since I like to see novel and creative decks
do well, and here therefore for the archives is one such, William Lee’s
Malkavian Derangement deck.

Thanks as usual toJohn Eagles for organising the event and judging. Prize
support is in the pipeline, apparently. BTW John and Ian’s shop is now a
smoke-free zone and after Saturday we hope it will a fart-free zone, too,
certainly those of us who were downwind of whoever let rip with a mighty
rip at the start of the third heat. My lips are sealed on the identity of
the culprit, and I hope the same will be true of his sphincter next time
it’s pointing in my direction.
Michael didn’t play vampires on Saturday because he was visiting his
friend Jack. Sadly, their combined Orc-Gobbo force was vanquished by the
Hordes of Tzeentch and Slaanesh [the latter commanded by a girl, which is
nice to see, though I wonder how her mum feels about her pre-pubescent
little darling being into thinly-disguised SM sex and violence], but not
before Michael’s Gobbo shaman had invoked the Foot of Mork [or possibly
Gork] to squash a Keeper of Secrets. So since we had the night off Lady
legbiter and I played Strip Jyhad, for the rules of which see the
alt.games.jyhad ng, or wait till the Christmas !Gangrel NL. I lost, but
I’m sure you had all already guessed that.
And that is NOT all for 1999, VTES-tournament-wise. Our regular Wednesday
group is now an official, DCI-sanctioned constructed-deck event, and so
there are two further opportunities in 1999 for Portsmouth Methuselahs to
get those ratings improved. We start about 8 for those who don’t know, the
venue isSecond Byte, 70B Albert Rd, and there will be an entry fee.
