Is there a Week of Nightmares? Is there anyone in charge?
I'm very confused by the lack of news about this.

No.

There is no evidence of one.

Oscar Garza, per the web page.

Email Shane and Oscar!
Get everyone you know to send an email this week asking for them to
get off their ass. You can do it!

This brings to mind a conversation from Origins.....
Forgive me, but I feel it important to offer some historical
perspective, you you don't want to read it, skip below to the "END
OF...." line.
Back in the old days of Milwaukee Gencons, WoN were entirely player-
driven and less competitive (in a sanctioned tournament kind of way).
We played pickup games in the bar area of an almost-local hotel. When
you got ousted from one game, you grabbed another (typically quirky,
fun deck) deck, raised your hand and yelled "need a game." Within
minutes, you were playing again - and a relaxed, friendly, ethanol-
enhanced game - no waiting for the round to finish, no pressure, and
getting to meet a whole lot of new people.
Tired of VtES after 22 hours of WoN pickups? There were a lot of
other games that developed (Zombies and Shadowfist were popular as I
recall - obviously pre-BSG).
You can tell by my description that I enjoyed that atmosphere, it was
nice to have non-stop action, a (limited) variety of games, and a low-
stress enviroment. It was something just plain fun, and we still tell
stories of some of the strange happenings from those days.
Later, when Gencon moved to Indianapolis, a shift started to occur.
We still played in bar with some drinking options (good beer,
actually) and 24 hour access (yeah, they ran 24 hours a day, in part
for us) but we began to intermix a tournament structure with casual
play - but there was still less focus on sanctioned consctructed
events. One day draft. The next day, Succubus Club*. Lots of Duffin
drafting and lots of pickups. Fewer non-VtES games, but still a
varied environment.
Again, you can tell I enjoyed that format too, though with the setting
in a bar instead of the hotel in which we all stayed did limit some
parts of the experience.
When we moved away from Gencon, the WoN became very competitive and
focused almost entirely on sanctioned play, with more White-Wolf
presence - the free food and beer was very, very welcome, but the
atmosphere became more oppressive as things tend to do in a
competitive setting. We still have a few quirky events (Jyhad-text
draft) and the events have been in the hotels again - which has been
nice.
In my opinion, this more competitive environment is far more likely to
bring ex-US players to the mix - the option of playing a number of
sanctioned tournments seems to encourage travel, as would an easterly
US setting. It's possible that just the NA Championship is enough of
a draw for EU players, but somehow I have a preconceived notation that
isn't the case.
While I enjoyed that format less, I very much enjoyed making new
friends from Europe and still seeing old friends from the Jyhad-Sabbat
days., so it's all still pretty good, yeah?
END OF HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE.
The question is....of these, which would the majority of players
prefer, assuming that WW will not be a well-organized, driving force
for WoN? Have we developed WoN the way people wish, assuming that
they are taking days off work to attend? Or it there something else
people would like to see?
And who would be interested in (helping to) organize these event,
again assuming that the player base needs to take over WoN?
I ask, because I have some free time on my hands and could consider a
role in organizing WoN 2010, but would need to get on the ball soon.
Kind regards,
Darby

*Succubus Club was a non-sanctioned mutli-deck format where every
player submitted their deck into a common pile of decks. You were
assigned a deck at random (constructed by someone else) for each
round. Both you (the player) and your deck recieved points for
performance. Finalists played their own decks. So you were rewarded
for submitting something good (your deck got points) that was
relatively easy to play (getting more points) and for your ability to
look at a deck and use it sucessfully (showcasing your ability).
(Mind you, I'm far from having made the decision to attend; at this
juncture, it's as likely I won't than that I will. That said...)
I liked the Milwaukee model best. In fact, I found the occasional
variant stuff that went on there to be unfortunate; if it were
for me to decide, I'd play endless hours of plain vanilla pick-up
games with lots of different people. The LA model was OK, too. I
didn't mind the tournaments, although the amount of limited play
prior to the beginning of the NAC proper was too much, IMHO.
> And who would be interested in (helping to) organize these event,

Under the circumstances (not even being all that likely to come),
I'm a 'no'.
