Very stupid newbie question

Can an ally recruit another ally or employ a retainer? Yes, it's clear
that recruiting allies that cost some blood is impossible, since allies
have no blood, but what about the rest?
I didn't find any prohibiting rules.

They sure can, as long as there is no clan or other requirement that
the ally cannot meet.

You occasionally might see someone play Jake Washington on turn 1 and
recruit Carlton van Wyck for example. All perfectly legal.

Retainers are action cards that give MINIONS special abilities. The
employ retainer action has a default +1 stealth.

To employ a retainer from your hand, play the card and tap the acting
MINION.

Actually, in one very weird game, Leonardo Mortician with Mr.Winthrop
saved my life once (and eventually gave me a tournament win :))
