Who can set up a Quiz with only one possible solution, and without any
added restrictions after someone found out other possible solutions.
:-P
You are playing your first match of your first tournament on your first day
at Origins 2004. You've gotten to the table first, and you notice that your
index card has been placed at the seat at the end of the table, meaning that
you are going first this round. You quickly hope that you have a 5-or 9-cap
vampire in your opening crypt, and then you remember that discussion on the
newsgroup where Derek Ray convinced you that going first can be to your
advantage, so you manage to calm down a bit. It'll all work out, you say to
yourself.
You know you're pretty anonymous, since you have never posted on the
rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad newsgroup, and you come from a small playgroup
in Wisconsin (USA) that likes to play decks based on Assamites, Ravnos, 10
(or more) Protect Thine Own, "Starter" decks, and stupid recursive decks
based on clans that nobody plays that manage to bring out ALL their vampires
in one turn and then oust you (stupid deck!), so there's little chance of
your opponents having advanced knowledge of your playstyle or deck
preferences. Your feeling is that if you appear to be enjoying the large,
open gaming area "too much", or if you talk out loud about how surprised you
have been that there is such a relaxed atmosphere at a "tournament", your
opponents this round will most likely underestimate you, and that could be
the edge you're looking for against the high level of VTES talent that
you've heard Origins usually attracts.
Your opponents all arrive at the table simultaneously, and they're all
talking with each other. As they introduce themselves, you realize that
they aren't a "team", but that this level of enjoyment and sportsmanship are
what you've heard about Origins from that crazy PTO guy in your playgroup
back home. You're glad that you took his advice to come this year. As your
opponents are seating themselves, you realize that while you've seen them
playing at different tables throughout the convention, you've never played
with them before today. You proceed to introduce yourself to each one.
Your prey sits down first, and you think that he must be the tallest VTES
player ever. He responds to your introduction by shaking your hand and
saying, "Hi, I'm Jay Kristoff. Nice to meet you." Wait a minute. You ask
him if he's the same Jay that has won a bunch of tournaments, and played in
the championships last year, and he says "Well, I wouldn't say I've won a
*bunch* of tournaments, but I did play in the championships last year, yes.
Ben over there actually *won* a few years back, so you might want to talk to
him about championships." The bald guy sitting as your grand-predator
laughs when Jay says this, and you wonder what that is all about, but you
realize that you'll probably never know. You can't remember who won "a few
years back", since you left all your printouts at home, but you will find
out who "Ben" is soon enough. Jay proceeds to set a slightly dirty stuffed
Pillsbury "dough boy" on the table and ask the other players "Edge? Edge?"
Everyone agrees that the dough-boy is a fine edge, and Jay proceeds to start
shuffling his deck. You are a little worried that someone who has won
tournaments and played in championships is your prey, but you figure that if
you can oust him before you get ousted, you can tell your friends back home
that you killed Jay Kristoff, and then maybe they'll stop ousting you with
starter decks.
Jay's prey is a girl. Cool! A girl! :) Wait a minute. You remember that
there aren't many girls that play this game, and that's probably not good
for you, since you've heard that most of them are quite skilled, and you
remember reading an article on vtesinla.com a while ago that was written by
a girl, for the other female players, telling them how to kill all the boys
at the table. Or something like that. She is munching on a chocolate bar
of some kind and she doesn't *look* too dangerous. Anyway, she's your
grand-prey, so hopefully she'll be your friend for a while. She is too far
away for a handshake, but responds to your introduction with "I'm Robyn."
Several things click all at once. You realize that she's Robyn Tatu, that
"inner circle" member at White Wolf. What is her job again? And that guy
she's been hanging out with most of the time you've seen her, that must be
David Tatu. You have heard about him on the newsgroup and on several
websites, and some people in your playgroup have talked about him. He was in
the finals on Thursday, and managed to qualify for the North American
Championship on Saturday, so you'll have to go say 'Hi' to him after this
game is over and learn what trick he can teach you. OK, she probably knows
how to play, so you had better be careful, especially if she has read that
vtesinla.com article!
Your grand-predator is that Ben guy, and you realize he's not bald. In
fact, he has this weird inch of hair growing out of the *front* of his head,
but it's so damn long that it's draped all the way over the *back* of his
head! It isn't *nearly* as long as that Trey-guy's hair, though! He kind
of looks like that guy on the UP YOURS card, except he doesn't have the same
mohawk. Wait a minute, this must be Ben Peal. Oh crap. Ben *did* win the
North American Championship a couple of years ago, and he's supposed to be
the best VTES player ever, except for that Rob guy in England, maybe. That's
what that newsgroup thread was about, wasn't it? You remember a different
newsgroup thread about how your grand-predator is your best ally in the
game, since he's probably the last person you will oust when you get the
Game Win. You introduce yourself to Ben, and he simply says "Ben Peal."
Like he's James Bond or something! You're hoping that your predator is a
combat deck or something that can go backwards easily so that Ben gets hurt
a little bit and doesn't turn out to be such a big threat. But he's
supposed to be your "best" ally at the table, right? You aren't sure what
to do about Ben, and you suddenly realize that this table might not work out
the way you'd like it to. And doesn't he have a FAN CLUB on Yahoo or
something? Oh my god.
Your predator is just getting to the table, and as he sits down, he says to
no one in particular, "Hi, I'm Peter. Sorry I'm late! The Star Fleet
Battles tournament I was just in just ended. I lost." From out of nowhere,
Jay says "Bakeeeja, what's up?" Peter looks across the table and says
"Oooohhhh nooo! You aren't playing *that* deck, I hope?" Jay chuckles at
this. Robyn looks up and says, "Oh, great." Peter's wearing this blue cap,
and you're not sure if he's bald or not (like Ben Peal over there) and he
seems like a pretty funny guy, even though he just lost another tournament.
Hopefully he'll still be having fun when you don't let him get your VP! =)
Wait a minute. This must be Peter Bajkia. Bakjia. Bakjai. However you
spell it. He posts on the newsgroup a lot, and always has a different quote
at the end of his post. Or is that the Josh guy? Anyway, you suddenly
remember several things about Peter. You recall how last year Peter tried
to convince everyone on the newsgroup that doesn't play with Succubus Club
how eeeeeevil a card it is, and that it shouldn't be banned, but that he
also couldn't figure out a way to "fix" it. LSJ didn't seem to buy that,
though. Come to think of it, LSJ doesn't seem to "buy" much. :) You also
remember that Peter is a big combat guy, and that people tease him on the
newsgroup about how they always know what he's going to be playing. Kind of
like that Xian guy with his Tremere decks. And that since you know he loves
combat (Nosferatu?) so much, you feel very comfortable as his prey -- since
Ben Peal, Mr. Best-Player-in-the-world-with-his-own-fan-club is *obviously*
a bigger threat than anonymous little ol' you are, Peter will have to go
upstream a bit on Ben, which is what you were hoping for in the first place!
Shweet! =)
As everyone is beginning to deal out their hands and crypts, and getting
their counters all set up, the judge says "We're going to start in about one
minute!" Once again, you're glad that you're here.

easy....
quiz question:
who is the artist of the card "Playing for keeps"?
and don't give me "any added restrictions"
Oortje
(snip a very fine and funny presentation).
Well, I met all the people you talk about, except Peter : I played against
(and was killed by) Jay Kristoff, I enjoyed very much meeting Robyn and
killed her husband in a vain attempt to win her heart ;-) and I nearly
killed Ben in real life with pure absynth from my necroflask. And I must say
one thing : I had a great time in Barcelona and look forward to seeing all
those very nice people and good players, and all the others, in the next EC.
But I do have one advantage over them all : everyone knows I make stupid,
non-winning decks, preferably 5 minutes before the tournie begins (and
sometimes up to 2 hours after the supposed beggining time...), but that I
try to put a hell of a good mood for everyone, with all the necrostealth I
can (to quote Sting, if there's a guy singing very loud some stupid tunes or
shouting some Anarch slogan : that's probably me !!). ;-)
But one day, I'll learn to play that very funny game you're all talking
about...
See y'all in Heidelburgh (hope you'll be in the US delegation too Kevin),
Orpheus
Heh. Skip one year in the last five, because I was buying a house, and
I don't even get mentioned. I see how you are, Kevein. ;-) It's my
intention to be there this year. We should all start getting
reservations set up and see who wants to share rooms with who.
Regards,
Noal

That was absolutely A+.
I'm going to have to plan my vacation for 2004 to coincide with at
least one major Con in the US. And 2005. And 2006. And 2007.
(I expect to be in the States a bit more in the upcoming 4 years at
least... how convenient).
