So Conor Key, Prince of Raleigh, put together this tournament,
and like insane maniacs, me and Trey Morita went down on his bike
to play in it. Only four and a half to five hours each way. It
didn't occur to me how grueling sitting for so long could be. :-)
We rolled up about half an hour before the scheduled start time,
since we'd left so early (not wanting to be late and miss it after
traveling so far), went and got some breakfast, and met the other
players. Jeff Thompson (aka TheLasombra) - also, clearly, an
insane maniac - came up from Atlanta, David Zopf and Jose LaFuente
were there from Charlotte, and a bunch of people from the nearer
Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area were also there; we had fourteen
in total, counting Conor, who opted to play under the multi-judge
system.
I was playing my Temptation of Greater Power (now with more Power
at 6 ToGPs)/Anarch Revolt/First Tradition/Minion Tap/5th Tradition/
stealth-Parity Shift deck. Trey was playing his twenty-Corruptions
vamp-stealing and bleed deck with Embraces.
First round:
Trey (Corruption) preyed on
Me (ToGP/sleaze) preying on
Jeff Thompson (!Tremere vote/Theft of Vitae) preying on
Jason Daniel (?) (Euro-Brujah combat/vote/bleed) preying on
Rob Grau (!Ventrue vote/bleed?) preying on Trey.
I brought out Lucian as my first vampire; Trey immediately started in
on the Corruption, getting about 5 tokens in the first few turns after
he came out. I Tempted with Greater Power two of Jeff's !Tremere vamps
with votes to improve my voting position (which was a bit difficult
since so many people had so many title vamps). Rob was destroying
Trey's pool with some efficiency; Jason was destroying Rob's pool in
a somewhat similar fashion. I cut deals to pass votes (in the sense of
giving other people Parity Shift pool, or taking pool from someone other
than my prey - Rob perhaps?) and managed to oust Jeff not long after
Jason got Rob. Jeff had been pretty thoroughly screwed by my theft of
two of his vamps, but gave me a hard time anyway by bringing out Ayelea
the Manipulator and stealing *back* his stolen !Tremeres, thus ensuring
that when I ousted him I'd lose at least one of them permanently. Right
around the time I ousted Jeff, Trey finished the corruption job on Lucian,
so I was not much longer for that world, and Trey killed me before falling
to Jason. 3/1/1 for Jason/Trey/me.
Second round:
I preyed on
David Cherryholmes (Gangrel Force of Will loop) preying on
Jose LaFuente (!Ventrue dom/for bleed/unblockable) preying on
(I think?) Daniel Wheeler (Gangrel princely something) preying on
(I think?) Will Enigh (Ravnos bleed/etc) preying on me.
Sorry about the unclarity on names; I should've written the report closer to
the event. Early on, I dropped a Parthenon or a Rumors, I forget which, and
an Anarch Revolt or two - I think one got burned and then I played another.
Screwed David by ToGPing his Raven with a Blood Doll and then Parity Shifting
him - I had vote lock most of this game, which was a beautiful thing. David
went down fairly quickly I think; not too far into the game, everyone but me
was quite low on pool and in danger of dying to the Anarch Revolt. Before
David died, I played a ToGP on Jose's Lazverinus, looking to ensure my votelock
and either make sure that Jose couldn't oust Daniel (not having Laz) or that
he would die paying the ToGP debt right after David went out. Unfortunately,
I made a deal with Jose to burn the Anarch Revolt that was out at the time in
return for his voting for me on a Parity Shift or KRC or some such (after his
winning bid of 9 on Lazverinus), so that he wouldn't die that turn, and then
upheld the deal, before realizing that that *also* meant that *David* wouldn't
die that turn. Doh! If only I'd remembered to backstab him... :-) So Jose
ousted Daniel right then, and it looked like he was going to get Will too,
except that I got off a Kindred Restructure to shuffle the three of us into
reverse order, and thereby stole Will's VP and Jose's too. Heh heh heh. 4/1
to me/Jose.
Third round:
I preyed on
Jason Daniel (Euro-Brujah combat/vote/bleed) preying on
Jose LaFuente (!Ventrue bleed) preying on
R. David Zopf (mainly-Follower of Set vote/bleed) preying on me.
I brought out Sheldon (I think?) plus Greger Andersen. David brought
out Khaytall the Snaky Guy. Jason brought out Donal O'Connor and Anvil
and somebody. Jose brought out guys with Dom and For. I blocked an
Archon Jason's Donal was calling for Anvil with Greger, figuring one
combat was better than an infinite number, but he burned Greger in just
the one. Doh. His wrath, it was burning. David kept bleeding me, and
so did Jose (cause David had Deflections). Because we all spent quite a
bit on vamps and didn't get a lot of pool gain, we all ended up on fairly
low pool totals after a short time, and I managed to get Jose to vote for
an Ancilla Empowerment that killed both his prey (David) and mine (Jason).
That part was great. Unfortunately, I then severely overbid for one of
Jose's vamps with ToGP, and generally made mistakes, and Jose killed me.
A lot. It was sad, because I'm pretty sure I had that game if I played
smart. 3/1 for Jose/me.
I went into the finals as second seed (behind Jose! Doh!). After we picked
seating...
I preyed on
David Artman (dom/obf(?) stealth-bleed) preying on
Rich Zink (Malk stealth-bleed) preying on
David Zopf (FoS bleed/vote) preying on
Jose LaFuente (!Ventrue bleed) preying on me.
I got an amazing start this game, which was probably a little too scary
for my own good. First turn Zillah's Valley on Sheldon (I went first);
second turn Sheldon came out. Nice. First time I started with a Zillah's
in hand, and it was great. So on my third turn I Tempted with Greater Power
one of David's vamps - can't remember who it was though. I believe I won
the auction (ack, no memory!), and proceeded to Parity Shift away five of
David's pool. I think that one actually went off. My relentless screwing
was about to begin, though... a turn or two later, I called Political
Stranglehold (to gain three pool, and probably also feed somebody cross-
table). Jose played Delaying Tactics. Might as well discard it, since it
can't be played again this game... Meanwhile, I had (if I remember right)
two of my Minion Taps Suddened, keeping me tragically low on pool. And
then, a few turns later, I was looking to oust David, and, again, got
greedy. Played ToGP on one of his vamps, bidding myself down to one pool.
Planned to make it up by gaining eleven via Parity Shifting five of his pool
to me, plus the six for the oust. Instead, Jose Delayed my Parity Shift.
Oh dear. I kept trying to play cards and find a Conservative Agitation to
save myself, but there are only a couple in the deck, and they weren't there.
So I went from the top of the world to the bottom, getting ousted by my ToGP
debt at the end of my turn, and going out first in the finals. Doh again.
Naturally, I then had to cheer for Jose to sweep, since I'd come in second if
he did. :-) He didn't quite manage that, but did kill my (already-nearly-
dead) prey David Artman; meanwhile Rich bled David Zopf out, and Jose's
Deflections became useless; Rich managed to bleed him out too, and took first
with 3 VPs, to Jose's second with 2 VPs, my 3rd with 0, David Artman's 4th
with 0, and David Zopf's 5th with 0 (if I remember right, again).
Lots of fun, even if I screwed up big-time on several occasions. I think
that Temptation of Greater Power may just be a little too tricky for me. I
kept bidding myself into nasty holes. Or maybe I just need more practice
with it. Or more Parity Shifts.
Thanks to Conor for hosting, and to everyone else for making the games so
much fun. (Um, not that Conor didn't too. Although I didn't actually play
with him in the tournament.)

Jose has been successfully running denial type tactics with his !Ven
for quite some time. Note that a mere four denial type cards (two
Delaying Tactics and two Sudden Reversals) really ruined Josh's great
start. Granted, you did overextend a bit, but not without some
indication that you were going to be getting your investments back...

*sigh* yes. Thats accurate. I've gotta start playing more
constructed tournaments, and let Jose organize a few ;-)

Yeah, it was a lot of fun. As was Mitch's Tavern afterwards <grin>

Ah yes, I actually wouldn't have thought of capitalizing it myself,
but that's how he's listed in the White Wolf player database. Tell
him he ought to change that. :-) Your name's easy. Although I did

Yeah, I was kinda guessing on what everyone's deck was constructed as.
I mean, I saw a lot of some of them, but not much of some others...
Yours was pretty mean, I thought. At least, it was mean to me. Which
is why I had to get you ousted. :-)
Thanks to Jeff for Rich's decklist, and apologies to Rich for
characterizing it as stealth-bleed when clearly it was stealth-vote.
;-) Five +bleeds doesn't exactly make a stealth-bleed deck, does it...
must not have been paying much attention to that end of the table.

It does if all five of those bleeds happen to hit you straight in the dome
early game. Rich (to me, his initial prey): "Don't worry it's not a
stealth-bleed deck. I bleed you for...five....plus two stealth. No,
really, it's not a stealth-bleed deck. I bleed you for six, plus two
stealth...."
But I'm one of those guys whose convinced (and compiling
statistics to prove) that if there's one deck at the table that will come
out strong early, I will be its bitch. Round two was the ToGP/Parity deck
that had the "convenient" vote lock.
Still had fun, tho.
