Is there a way to make them all go away? Am I just stoopid?
Thanks,
Try Tools->Message Rules->News and create a rule that deletes all messages
that were send more than X days ago. There might even be a rule that deletes
all messages marked as read. I'm not sure how well it'll work because I keep
all of mine ( saves me having to search Google when I want to look up
stuff ).

Trying using Free Agent instead or spring for a copy of the real
thing, Agent. I use Outlook at work and consider Agent to be superior
for plain text mail and news.

I'll look into that one, as this outlook is sucktackular.
Thanks!

I also use Agent. Comes with a plethora of configurable options,
including how long to retain "read" messages, and this great big "next
unread message" button to skip through things.

Andrew is right. Free Agent has been around forever (relatively
speaking), and is what all newsreaders should aspire to.
Get it here:
You going to Origins this year Pete? How about GenCon?

I was having trouble finding it--thanks for the link!

Yeah, I'll be at Origins, but Gen Con is highly unlikely to happen (ya know,
unless, like, I win the lottery or something). Pretty standard.
You could avoid using newgroup readers altogether and just use Google.
They seem to have finally figured out how to integrate the newsgroups
into their service post-deja.com.
Check it out. I find it very convenient. Only drawback is you can't
take it with you if you're travelling and want to do some offline
reading/posting.
Two major drawbacks to Google:
1) The inability to thread properly (Google merely simulates
thread following by guessing threads based on subject line).
2) Latency. Posts don't show up on google for 1 to 9 hours
after being posted (even when posted directly on Google),
according to Google's statements.

Sadly, reading newsgroups on a web browser suffers from being inconviniently
slow if you don't have a direct connection. Kind of a pain.
I figured out how to make the outlook-suckspress work better (I was missing
out on the "only show unread messages" button...), but I'll probbaly go
check out Free Agent anyways.

Google sucks. Major lag time on posts, major lag time on reads, can't
take it with me, can't make my OWN archive, and will eventually get
filtered by most news providers since you can post anonymously from it
and therefore it will become a major spam source. Oh, and they don't
provide article-IDs for crossreferencing, although you can search on
them.
Google is only useful when you're NOT at a machine with your newsreader;
you can at least get the content to you, but the packaging stinks.

With Newswatcher, you can create as many servers as you want via
the News Servers command in the Special menu. Each is independent of
the other. Each file of newsgroups that you store keeps track of what
server the groups are on, so your wife and you can each have separate
files with your groups in them, and no one is bothered by the other.
(If you're using plain old Newswatcher instead of MT-Newswatcher, you
should switch. It's still free, but substantially more full-featured.)

You can get article IDs from Google under the "Original Format" link
from the single-article view.

Umm, so I downloaded Free Agent like you guys said, and if anything it annoys
me even more than Outlook Express. For one thing, it's ugly, but maybe I'll
get used to that. But more importantly, the most annoying thing about OE is
that you can't turn off line wrap. And, from the looks of the options menus in
FA, you can't do it there either. What the hell?
Also, I don't think there's a way to automatically retrieve all messages
instead of just the silly headers. I have to double-click the message, or hit
enter. This isn't the 80's, I'm not worried about my connection speed, sheesh.
If anyone cares to help me with these problems (especially line wrap... I
refuse to wrestle with a new newsreader if it can't handle turning off line
wrap), please email me. Or whatever.

They just add that? =) I remember (and i know you do, too) when they
wouldn't... I'm still sticking with Agent, but that at least is a small
improvement on Google's part.

From the main screen: "Message", "Word Wrap". Also just press "O" in
my version of Agent.

Under "Group", "Default Properties", "Retrieve", there is an option
checkbox for "Retrieve bodies for all new messages."
