Summer, with its expected temporary loss of players, has still seen a
few tournaments and casual play alike.
It seems clan Toreador continues its streak of tournament winning
inability.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back to the basics:
Toreador Grand Ball, Toreador Grand Ball and Toreador Grand Ball.
Cardname: Toreador Grand Ball
Cardtype: Master
Set: CE, DS
Clan: Toreador
Cost: 1 pool
Cardtext: Master.
Put this card in play. Choose 2 ready Toreador you control. The first
Toreador's non-bleed actions cannot be blocked. The second Toreador does
not untap as normal during the untap phase; tap the second Toreador.
Any minion may burn this card as a (D) action; Nosferatu get -1 stealth
when attempting that action.
This is one of the strongest cards in the game. Old players know its ins
and outs but as I'm targeting players who don't dream and eat this game
some words of explanation might come in handy.
You get one unblockable Toreador as long as you don't bleed. This master
card is not unique, and let's assume you have two large Toreador in play
and one small, then it's perfectly legal to target the small one to tbe
tapped for the benefit of both the large ones. This is because a tapped
card may be tapped.
It's a consequence of this card, not a cost.
This card usually shines strongest when the action to burn it comes with
an obvious cost. The deck I'm displaying in this newsletter is based on
that, but other versions run on big guns and lots of untap/wake and
block.
I've seen it played with nothing but combat ends, and almost always this
results in both prey and predator spending actions burning the card, all
too often disabling the deck needing it.
Another misconception is that you need to be unblockable only because
your vampires won't survive combat. Yes, soft targets need to avoid
combat, but those who can deal out damage as well as anyone else also
need to pick their fights.
If you want to gun down that Inner Circle you're not going to be helped
when a capacity two gun-fodder vampire stands in your way.
Add all those actions you all too seldom see in a Toreador deck. Steal
or burn allies/retainers/equipment/locations.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Card of the Month:
Cardname: Neighborhood Watch Commander (Hunter)
Cardtype: Ally
Set: Gehenna
Cost: 2 blood
Cardtext: Mortal with 1 life. 1 strength, 0 bleed.
When an action taken by a vampire ends unsuccesslly, you may tap this
card at the end of that action to inflict 1 damage on the acting
vampire. Only one Neighborhood Watch Commander may tap to inflict damage
each action.
Normally not worth the action, but if you know that players around you
tend to favour dominate based bleeds then this ally could shut your prey
down before he/she manages to bleed through prey number two.
I'm assuming you're playing a blocking Toreador deck and that you plan
to grab exactly three VP each game. Your prey will get one oust and one
VP when you play this type of deck.
The Watch Commander thrives on all those bounced bleeds that get blocked
and result in combats of the type "slap for one, slap for one". Adding
another point of damage soon proves costly as dominate bleeds tend to
cost blood to begin with.
This ally is also hilarious for shutting down weenie decks. "Must hunt,
block, Change of Target, Hmm -- tap commander -- go to torpor anyway."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deck of the Month:
Name: And Halt Everybody
Description: Prevent players from taking actions by burning their
vampires. We're not in the game for making friends.
Millicent will follow players as Predator plays after
Prey. The two
events help burning even more vampires. Use Anthelios to bring the
lovely vampire hunter back over and over
again.
Hardly a deck I'd bring to a tournament, but strangely
enough it does win a game now and then during casual
play, which tend to be more combat oriented.

another way of playing this: play 1 or 2 every turn. and just don't defend
it. IME, that works too.

ooh. is it coincidence or are we all connected to a V:TES Hive Mind? I'm
trying to make a deck based on both Marijava Thuggees and Neighborhood Watch
Commanders. emphasis on trying, though.

no Anarch Revolt? looks good in this type of deck, because it becomes a
damned if you do, damned if you don't thing for your prey. Either try to
sneak a become anarch action through (and be burned when blocked) or take
the pool damage.
Yep, but so would I. My big vamps are titled, so I'm prone to taking
the damage myself, and unlike the "good old" Anson/Anarch Revolt deck
this one doesn't bloat like mad.
Maybe another version.

true. I was thinking about making one of you small ones anarch. But that's
gonna be blocked probably.
