Over a year ago, I spilled water on my Pander deck. I mostly lost
commons, I threw some away, but I tried to salvage what I could, and a
few of the cards were still flat and totally playable. Pat Lusk was
nice enough to trade me anything I wasn't going to be able to put in
my deck, and I put the "survivors" back in the box at some point.
I suspect this was a big mistake.
A few months ago, I noticed the smell of mildew in my cards. What was
I going to do? I asked people who knew about mold or mildew, but they
all suggested some sort of liquid to do the job, which would of course
wreck my cards worse than the mildew. I went to the library to
research this.
The college library here in town "recently" had a cave-in when it
snowed, so they had to hire professionals to de-mold their books.
Here's what I learned:
1.) Keep your cards at about 70 degrees F. I thought keeping things
warmer might make them dry faster, but warmth helped the mold, and
cooling my room down has helped.
2.) Make sure air can circulate. My cards are in boxes, so from time
to time, I now take the lids off for a couple days.
3.) If things get really bad, use baking soda (or kitty litter or
charcoal) as a desiccant (dries things out). Put the cards in a tub
(Rubbermaid does me fine) with baking soda in the bottom and the cards
fanned out near it. I haven't had to do this yet.
Just airing things out and cooling things down, the smell is
disappearing on its own. Still, I don't want to have to lose my
collection, and I thought I'd post this here in case anyone out there
smells mildew in their collection.

a lot of normal products have in their packages a little bag of silica
gel (sport shoes, some eletronical devices, etc). this bags absorbs
the humidity and some of then also are mixed whith fungicide.
you can use a few bags and put them on your ex-shoes-now-cards-boxes
yo prevent this.

byez!
that's what i do, too. also there's little ones in with vitamins and
other things like that. just instead of throwing them out when you've
finished the vits, put them in your card box(es).

Another good way to eliminate the mildew smell: Set your cards on
fire.
