Yeah, europeans pay way too much for singles. I can't believe House
Aristides gets any business at all. According to Google, 1 U.S. dollar
= 0.725900116 Euros. Wanna pay $2.75 for a copy of Convergence? I
thought not. Part of it may be that the US dollar is teh suck, but
seriously?

Lasombra ran a singles store for years before he decided that it
wasn't profitable, and I'd guess he was even getting those boxes
at distributor prices. You can't have competition at a loss.

IANJTakaTL but I'm not sure it was the case of lack of
profitability... If I recall correctly, the quoted reason
for discontinuing his singles businness was the lack of
spare time that resulted from his new job/position.
I might be wrong, and there might be indirect profitability

If I were to guess, (which I'm completely doing), selling singles on
the level that The Lasombra was doing probably did a good job of
paying for the cards the business owner wanted for playing the game
with, and might have even generated some extra cash for subsidizing
the trips to play VTES that he took (i.e. it was all kind of a self
supporting system). I doubt it was profitable enough to justify the
time it took given something else needing to be done with that time
(i.e. work) but probably profitable enough to be worth the effort when
there wasn't something else to be done with that time.

Yes, exactly. Having done several forays into selling single VTES cards,
you can't make a living doing just that. If you could sell perhaps 4-5
CCGs at the VTES level (very tough now, CCG market is pretty much dead),
you might make a living. I tried doing it with Pokemon, L5R, Song of Ice
and Fire aka Game of Thrones, and VTES. Pokemon - singles on ebay didn't
make it worth my time to sell them unless I could re-buy singles for less
than the wholesale price of a pack of cards. And commons and uncommons are
like trash. L5R was ok, although commons and uncommons you had to sell as
"play sets". Game of Thrones - not too many dealers of that game, so it
sold ok. And VTES was actually the best, since folks will pay US$1 or more
for specific vampires ("uncommons"), and are actually willing to pay money
for some commons too. And then you can sell rares too.
But at the end of the day, the effort put in did not match the money that
was returned, if you want to live on it. Ebay does not allow most of the
aspects of the business to be automated, even using their Turbo Lister
tool. What I didn't do was sell boxes. What I didn't do was run this
business through my brick&mortar store when I owned one. Perhaps if I did
both of those things, my singles business would have been more strong. For
certain, buying singles back over the counter is a much cheaper way to
source singles than cracking packs bought at wholesale. And selling boxes
can get you sometimes to a volume where your wholesale cost is reduced,
increasing your profits. However, selling a box for which you pay $57 for
$64 won't probably pay for your trip to the EC even.

Americans really take their prices on a lot of things for granted...
anything made in america typically costs a fortune more elsewhere -
vtes prices in australia are near double US retail

If we (= europeans / Dutchies to be more specific) order in the States
(where a boosterbox costs $63,-, and thus have said box imported, what
happens is this: we get charged shipping costs first (which is
perfectly acceptable), then dutch customs decides that a description
on the box reading 'Gaming Cards' means it can be taxed for 19%
(that's high rate VAT in the netherlands - for a description reading
'Books', or 'Playing Cards' we might get lucky and only have to pay 6%
(low rate VAT). After this, an 'import-tax' is charged as well. So
price is up to about € 70,- euro's in total by then (at going rate,
that's about $ 96,-)
Cheapest distributor in Europe charges about €70/€75 for a booster
box, and that's without shipping.
So I think non-US is definately at a disadvantage here... Sucks, tbh.

Well, actually, there is one, the noseless kind... Not sure if it is
intended to be a "you know this post is a joke? right?" kind of smiley,

Yeah, I know. I was just partaking in meta group humor.
To be clear, if the guy who posted that (Niklas Borg) is paying
attention:
A) There was recently yet another discussion about how these sorts of

B) Even if they were, why, for the love of punk rock, wouldn't you
