All,

Duplicated from another thread, here's a deckbuilding challenge to you...

Using only the cards contained in two precon starters of your choice,
generate a decklist you think would be competitive in a mid-size
constructed tournament(not a qualifier or championship, but assume strong
local players, and, say 20 participants). Duplicating a starter is
acceptable. Choosing more recent precons (3rd Ed, LOB, KMW) is preferred
(but not mandatory). Alternatively, you could choose to substitute the
content of VTES Player's Kit for one precon. If you've got the stones to
play it For Real in a sanctioned event, so much the better, let us know how
you do.

The goals here are

1) to challenge your m@dd deckbuilding skills!!

2) to generate some ideas for competitive decks that new/early players
might look to for inspiration and direction for their own collecting
efforts.

Also, I think these decklists could go a long way as evidence against the
(false) perceived need for big investment in cards in order to build
competitive decks.

If we can figure out some fair way to determine whose decklist is best,
I'll mail that person some cards, including one each of the last few
Mariana Gilbert and Dan Murdock's in my promo box, from the Buonocore
Stash.

AFIAK, he's still making the Big Bucks, working at "The Man's Brokerage and

try to touch base with The Evil One, and get an update.

Who has ever said this? If they did, they are being foolish. $20 can get
you two of the same starter; put them together and in 30 minutes you can
have a seriously good deck, even tournament-quality. Maybe Tier1.5
instead of Tier1, but, as an example, I would put two BH !Malk starters
against 80% of the decks I see in tournaments any day.

heres an idear that you might find interesting:

since single (or double)copies of many rares (if you use the sames
starter twice) do not make that much sence in a constructed deck where
a handfull of commons would be a better choice. so heres my idear when
bulding the deck you can trade rares for a fixed numer of uncommons or
commons and uncommens for a fixed numer of commones but not the other
way (people fill usualy trade you a good number of cards of lesser
rarety but not so often the other way round!). commons and uncommons
you trade have to be from 3rd, kmw or lob to ensure they be easy to
obtain. all trades should be listetd in the decklist so new players
can see that its still just 2 precons with trading that will always be
achivable (especialy with the quality of precon rares)

that gives us more flexebility in deckbuilding and gives new players
the feel that they can not only bulid on a budget deckt that are
competitiv but also have a great number of deck to build to choos
from.

exact numbers of the trade is up for discussion if the idear is liked
in general

BTW, this sort of challenge is my life :) I constantly recruit
newbies, and I have to explain them how to get a decent deck without
huge investments. Thanks for the great idea!
It would be even more great if you manage to push some WW officials to
try playing such decks against the normal decks. I've already asked
for printing the "kits" suitable for newbies (e.g. a CEL/POT Rush kit,
FOR/PRE voting kit and so on) - but they printed a pile of not-to-good
cards in their Player's Kit, so it's nearly useless. You know, a
starter isn't always a good base for a deck: why a newbie should be
restricted to one clan?

two BH !Nossie starters.
Built to show that the two-starter method works even with average
starters and non-cheesy tactics :)

Optionally, make some cosmetic changes (Guard Dogs->Forceds; Calebos,
Kendrick->Nigel, Calebros, Amelia), using the couple of Disarms for
trade. Or sell the Disarms, thus cutting your costs by one third.

competitive? hard to tell, but I would surely take such a deck to a
tournament without a risk of embarassing myself :)

Good idea.

I would propose I pretty conservative approach:

1 Uncommon = 2 Commons
1 Rare = 4 Commons
1 Power Rare (Dreams, War Ghoul) = Another Rare

Also the trades should be listed under the decklist.
They should be reasonable as well, no one will trade for a Crusade.

We could archive the results somewhere as a "Beginners Guide to Cheap
V:TES", that would be an awesome resource for new players. We can also
find people to translate, perhaps.

Fairly simple Guruhi vote deck using two starters. Less toolbox than
the original deck, but still with the occasional intercept/proactive
combat card, not to mention the usual extra bleeding capability
provided by Iron Glare.
I'm sad Guruhi Are The Land can't make the final cut, though. It's
either it + equipments or more Iron Glares. Since only two vampires
are Magaji, no wonder why Iron Glare is the preferred choice.

Two more.
These use 1x Anathema deck + 1x !Brujah (3rd Edition).
It's still a bruise n' vote deck using pot/for/obf and just a card or
two requiring [cel], but with a little more (and cheaper) stealth and
block deterrents (such as Hidden Lurker, Rabbat and Hektor's specials
and a little more combat punch).

Oops. It seems I've started the crypt with TWO Anathema decks and
ended up with 1x more copy of Mata Hari, Wolfgang and Rabbat than what

This requires some changes in the last deck (basically, take Rebirth

@p10g2000cwp.googlegroups.com:

It adds complexity to the challenge, and to the message to new players.
In case it wasn't clear, I'm really considering these decklists as
advertising for new players..

"Bash these two precons together, and the deck is tournament worthy"
is a far stonger message in support of the game's affordability than
"bash these two precons together, go trade with some locals to get these
10-12 cards, and if they don't have them, well its OK but the deck won't
be quite as good as it might be... you can tweak it later when you find
the cards"

I'd prefer to stay on message, and keep the challenge simple.

This idea could certianly be implemented, but maybe in a trade-league
type format for journeymen VTESsers, who are a bit further along the
Fivefold Path

Good input though, thanks!

For the newbie who doesn't mind learning the hard way when to rush, when
to bleed, when to stay untapped and when to suck it up, I present:

2 Akunanse starters!

Crypt:
3 Uchenna ABO ANI FOR 7, Akunanse, magaji
3 Amavi pre pro ABO ANI FOR 8, Akunanse
2 Sanjo abo chi ANI FOR 6, Akunanse
2 Meno Ngari abo 2, Akunanse
2 Dolie abo ani 3, Akunanse

I've dropped Kamiri wa Ithero. He just doesn't bring enough to this party
for 10 pool. A few vamps from the booster packs like Nkule, Jubal and
Hasani will greatly enhance this crypt.

Library: (90 cards)
Master (16 cards)
2 Abombwe
1 Barrens, The
6 Blood Doll
1 Effective Management
1 Jungle Hunting Ground
1 KRCG News Radio
2 Life in the City
1 Major Boon
1 Sudden Reversal

Doubled the Abombwe cards (since half the crypt only has abo) and the
Blood Dolls (best card in the deck). Dropped the sketchy Parthenon (trade
it to another noob) + Secret Horde tech, complicated Rotschreck and highly
situational Vox Domini. Major Boon is also maybe a bit complex for a new
player and would be a good candidate to swap if keeping Rotschreck is
desired.

Action (14 cards)
1 Army of Rats
6 Computer Hacking
6 Harass
1 Tier of Souls

Army of Rats and Tier of Souls can't really be defended very well with the
stupid Rats' Warning, so there's only one of each. Doubled Computer
Hackings and Harass. Harass has better synergy with the press combat
Abombwe features and it's not that likely there will be a lack of targets.
If copies of Nkule can be acquired to go with Uchenna, a few No Secrets
From the Magaji will really improve this deck.

Action Modifier (12 cards)
4 Devil-Channel: Throat
4 Freak Drive
4 Predator`s Mastery

Dawn Operation ranges from problematic to useless. Rarely will it find a
happy medium in constructed play. Better to double the Freaks.

Political Action (0 cards)

Yeah. This isn't a vote deck.

Reaction (8 cards)
4 Instinctive Reaction
4 Rat`s Warning

This deck would be greatly enhanced by including a fistfull of Predator's
Communion. A newbie Akunanse player should make haste to acquire several
of these very useful commons. Also, I wish the Instinctive Reactions were
Cats' Guidance. Since they aren't, I'll just add one. Unseen Hibernation
is too prayerish.

Combat (36 cards)
2 Canine Horde
4 Carrion Crows
4 Devil-Channel: Hands
8 Invoking the Beast
6 Rolling with the Punches
4 Skin of Steel
4 Song of Serenity
4 Unflinching Persistence

I doubled everything except the Devil-Channel: Hands (4 seem sufficient).
This is actually quite a good selection of combat, but 20 cards is a
little lean for a fighty constructed deck. Some Tastes of Vitae (4 or so)
would be great here, but they aren't available in any booster packs that
are currently in print. The 3rd Edition !Brujah starter is currently the
best place to get them.

Ally (0 cards)

Gregory Winter is a great card, but I'm not seeing the synergy here.

Retainer (1 cards)
1 Owl Companion

The owl is nice. Ravens would be better. At any rate, one should be
plenty.

Equipment (2 cards)
1 Laptop Computer

1 Reliquary: Akunanse Remains

Bleed permanents are a great plan in a deck that has Freak Drives. I'd be
tempted to add a second Laptop, but by my count, I've just hit 90 cards.

Combo (1 cards)
1 Akunanse Kholo

It doesn't really help the principle goal of the deck, but it's too good
not to include.

Kev,

Check out the "No VTES in Hamburg, Germany?" thread. I've heard this
argument a fair few time myself, in soliciting demoes here in Flat
Raccoon CT. People a very used to CCGs being an expensive proposition.
Its the foul reputation of our game's peers (MtG, VS, YuGoi, L5R and the
rash of anime-stuff thats come out recently) which sullies our good
name, and its a tough rep to shake.

Good lists everyone! I'm printing and saving them all, thanks!

I'm thinking that the appraisal of these lists will happen Iron Chef
style. We'll get a panel of 3-5 illustrious judges (newsgroup
luminaties who don't submit lists of their own, maybe a few WW
employees) to assess them, and award points based on various categories
of performance, along with some lesser section for success in meeting
the technical requirements of the challenge. Any one who wants to also
help in building the structure of that judging system is welcome to
submit ideas.

Tremere Antitribu
Third Edition Bruise and Bleed

Crypt [12]
------------------------------
1x Lucubratio
3x Paul Cordwood
2x Ladislas Toth, the Torch
2x Frondator
2x Alejandro Aguirre
2x Janine

Here I would like to take advantage of Paul Cordwood's special ability
-- I think it will help get a crucial Govern the Unaligned or Rutor's
Hand through. I dropped Uta Kovacs so I could focus on the tight
govern chain. A new player would greedily bring out Paul then Govern
to his/her heart's content.

Library [90]
------------------------------
Action [17]
2x Dominate Kine
10x Govern the Unaligned
1x Graverobbing
2x Harass
2x Rutor's Hand

Light on the rush because of all the intercept available. You will
use all your combat cards.

Action Modifier [14]
7x Bonding
7x Threats

Your Governs will be split between influence and bleed: keeping this
many modifiers makes sure that the bleeds that land count.

Combat [24]
10x Apportation
12x Theft of Vitae
2x Walk of Flame

I can't resist the Walk of Flame. If animalism retainers are popular
in your neck of the woods then Weather Control is a better choice.

Equipment [2]
2x Helicopter

Master [11]
4x Blood Doll
2x Dominate
2x Golconda: Inner Peace
2x Thaumaturgy
1x University Hunting Ground

Reaction [22]
6x Enhanced Senses
4x On the Qui Vive
8x Redirection
4x Spirit's Touch

Ran out of room for the rest of the Spirit's Touch. If I had access
to boosters I would replace the two Helicopters above with two more On
the Qui Vive.

No mention of grouping rules? I assume, given the context that they
must be followed, but normally when using sealed deck product things
are different.

Anyway, here's the deck I built from 2 Gangrel Anarch Starters:

6x Bum's Rush

Action Modifier [10]
2x Dawn Operation
2x Earth Control
2x Freak Drive
2x Kiss of Ra, The
2x Uncontrollable Rage

Combat [40]
6x Bone Spur
2x Canine Horde
4x Carrion Crows
2x Drawing Out the Beast
4x Earth Meld
2x Flesh of Marble
4x Form of Mist
4x Scorpion Sting
4x Skin of Night

4x Unflinching Persistence

Equipment [2]
2x Laptop Computer

Master [13]
1x Backways
4x Blood Doll
2x Fame
2x Gangrel Revel
2x Haven Uncovered
2x Rötschreck

Reaction [8]
4x Cats' Guidance
4x Rat's Warning

Retainer [7]
2x Dog Pack
1x Owl Companion
4x Raven Spy

It's a wall/rush combat deck. I must admit I was disappointed by the
lack of presses in this starter, but you should be able to nab most
vamps in the first round anyway. Only good consistent prevention will
save most vamps, and then they'll probably still be eating the drawing
and carrion crow damage. Certainly not the most powerful deck out
there, but definitely fun to play, and can potentially do quite well.
My advice to people on a tight budget who want to play a powerful
competitive deck is to go for a stealth bleed deck.

The resulting deck must be playable in a standard constructed
tournament. The grouping rule is inherent in that environment. There
is absolutely no reason to mention it separately.

"Using only the cards contained in two precon starters
of your choice, generate a decklist you think would be

competitive in a mid-size constructed tournament (not a

qualifier or championship, but assume strong local players,
and, say 20 participants)."

Is anyone on JOL who would like to give their deck a go? I could
contact Wes to set us up a non-league game? (Mine's already stored and
ready to go. Whilst the challenge is for a newbie to compet in a 20
person constructed, could be a potential for limited games, hence 5 go
against each other).

Cheers

Thanks, Leggy.

I am thinking a simple points-based system for evaluating success in
acheiving the goals of the deckbuilidng challenge, weighted about 1/4 for
fulfilling the technical obligations of the challenge, and 1/2 for
effectiveness and ease of use to new players, with a final 1/4 for style
(the Iron Chef standard for judging is in effect here, 10 points for taste,
5 for originality in use of the secret ingredient, and 5 for plating).
I'll be getting fabulous prizes and a panel of illustrious judges together
shortly, so keep those submissions coming, everyone!!

Great challenge! Here's my shot at it.

Ishtarri starter works as a base and about twenty cards (plus some
vampires) come from the Anathema starter. Both are from recent sets
and their prices are reasonable due to not having any real power rares
printed in them. There's no reaction cards so it's pretty much just
bleed, bleed and bleed. There's four vampires in the crypt that can
use the obfuscate stealth cards. Discipline master are there to give a
vampire a chance to play superior Forced March. Pool gain from dolls
(and possibly Restorations), bleeds and hopefully speed. Enchant down
for more. Combat is there simply for survival.

Possible tweaks:
- More stealth from Alacrity (although expensive)
- For light vote defence there Ishtarri Kholo, 3x Mob Rule and 3x
Scalpel Tongue available (maybe with wakes)

Howdy,

I couldn't let this thread slip away into oblivion without my humble
contribution, which, notably, is not a mashup of two !Ventrue
precons. (That is left as an exercise for the reader. It's not hard,
but the result isn't a lot better than one !Ventrue precon, and that's
not real great. A little more Seduction & Govern, and maybe a few
Freak Drive, though, and it would be pretty close to a standard
kitchen sink bleeder.)

Description:

Yeah, sure, you could just take two CE Ventrue precons and come up
with something that would look more polished, but I think this should
be more interesting. Well, if you consider stealth bleed/vote
interesting, that is...

I took the FoS crypt, removed the non-obf Followers (+ Dedefra), and
added the obf Ventrue (+ Ranjan). Suhailah is a hard call, as she has
no pre; I left in the one Presence master. It's a five discipline
deck, though the only Fortitude is a couple Freak Drive for the
surge. There's not a lot of Dominate or Serpentis use either, leaving
it pretty much OBF/PRE centered.

>From there, I put in basically all the stealth, tap, and
unblockability cards. There are plenty of very good actions, both
bleed and vote. (I left out the PTO, but there are two Banishment!)
There's a decent amount of bloat (though obviously the Short-Terms
would rather be other masters), a decent amount of S:CE, and token
bounce. The crypt is kinda big, but it should be playable, I think.

Hope that helps,
Alex

Combining this and the other PD thread I started:

I'm teaching my friends the game right now. We did a few tryout games
using some all-common card promo decks I found on lasombra.com. One of
my friends really liked the Gangrel deck, so I bought her the !Gangrel
PD (the shop didn't have the CE Gangrel deck) for her birthday. I then
thought, you know what, since she likes animalism best, I'll get her
the Nosferatu (CE) deck as well..

It's been established in my other thread, however, that both of these
suck eggs and I feel kinda bad about getting her exactly these 2
decks. Is anyone of you perhaps able to make an ok deck out of these
2 ? It would be very much appreciated.

thanks,
Teeka

I'm not sure whether this is *that* much better than either of the two
decks it's built from - it would have been really nice if either deck
had
included some sort of bleed booster.

But basically, it's a stealthed-little-bleeds deck with some aggpoke/
ani
rush - ani/obf/pro with just a *touch* of pot for some surprises.

Use at your own risk, though - it's gotten rid of the chaff cards,
and
trimmed things down so that most of the crypt can play most of the
cards,
and knows what it's trying to do, but that doesn't make it decent. :-)
