Someone can explain me the meaning of the monster names.
Some names, like BAT or SNAKE, are understandable, bun i'm curious about
all.
Marco
Aquator - Line round the centre of the earth
Bat - flying thing that leaves caves on the right hand side
Centaur - half man half horse, so he can get down the pub quicker
Dragon - big flying lizard
Emu - I have no idea why they included this, prolly because it began with E
Venus Fly-Trap - Carnivorous plant of more tropical climbs
Griffin - Cross between a bird and a dragon. Worked for Midland bank until
they changed their name to HSBC
Hobgoblin - Bigger than a goblin, and a tad harder. Green humanoid mythical
thing
Ice Monster - Monster made of ice
Jabberwock - Enid Blyton creature, from a poem
Kestrel - Hunting bird
Leprechaun - Irish imp that hords money and breakfast cereal
Medusa - Bird with snakes instead of hair. Supposed to blind you if you
ever look directly at her
Nymph - Mmmm nymph
Orc - Big version of hobgoblin
Phantom - Invisible ghost thing with the strength of 10 tigers
Quagga - Its a placenta mammal... kinda like kangaroos and Tasmanian Devils
Rattlesnake - a snake with a rattle
Snake - Yup, its a snake
Troll - Live under bridges and newsgroups
Black Unicorn - Bad version of White Unicorn, I guess... should be called
unihorn, as they only have the one sticking out of their heads
Vampire - turns into bats when it wants to travel
Wraith - Evil ghost dude
Xeroc - A photocopier
Yeti - Abominable snowman thing
Zombie - Not quite dead dude
Hope that helps...
Also, FYI here is the breakdown of all the creatures
In brackets is what the creature does... ie a bat will be asleep until you
disturb the room, then it wanders about and flits about (the jumpy bit you
see)
First part in quotes is damage they inflict, ie 3d4 means the damage can be
between 3 and 12 (111, 444)
Second Part is the creatures hit points, ie, how much damage you need to
inflict to kill the creature
Third Part is a letter, which corresponds to the creature itself
Fourth Part, is the experience points you gain for killing the creature ( I
think)
Fifth and Sixth Parts, are the lowest and highest levels a creature can come
in at... eg, you will only get an Aquator between levels 9 and 18
The rest of the numbers I aint got a clue on *8^)

Urvile: from Stephen R. Donaldson's "Cronicles of Thomas Covenant"
Jabberwock: from a poem who's author I forget
Emu: a bird similar to an Ostrich

emu - [,i:mju:] - noun - a large Australian bird that runs but
cannot fly.
or am i wrong, and australia was invented by tolkien?
>Quagga - Its a placenta mammal... kinda like kangaroos and Tasmanian Devils
I heard of a plan to recreate the quagga (which is actually an extinct
relative of the zebra) by cloning. Anyone know of progress on this?
Then we can do unicorns.

Is that it? I've often wondered. What exactly IS it?
>Jabberwock: from a poem who's author I forget
"Jabberwocky", from the novel "Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carrol:
Beware the Jabberwock, my son
The claws that bite, the jaws that catch!
Beware the Jub-Jub Bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch.
(Quoted from memory.)
"Vorpalize" originates from the same poem ("He took his vorpal sword in
hand..."). These are all nonsense words, of course; like most of the
poem.

Some have been explained already. Here are some others:
A = Aquator, a made-up word evidently meant to imply "water monster".
C = Centaur, a creature from Greek mythology. Has the head, arms, and
torso of a human, but the body of a horse from the waist down.
F = Venus Flytrap (giant) - a carnivorous plant known for eating flies.
G = Griffin - another mythological beast, with the head of a giant eagle
and the body of a lion. Some versins of mythology give it an eagle's
wings as well.
J = Jabberwock, made-up monster described in a nonsense poem by
Lewis Carrol.
K = Kestral (sic) - a kestrel is a kind of bird.
L = Leprechaun - an imp-like creature from Irish mythology. Hoards
gold and is said to live "at the end of the rainbow".
M = Medusa - Medusa was the greatest of the three Gorgons in Greek
mythology. She had poisonous acidic blood, hair made of serpents,
and was so ugly that anyone who met her gaze was turned to stone.
(Her severed head kept this power even after Perseus killed her.)
N = Nymph - a spirit which resembles a young woman of unearthly beauty.
Q = Quagga - an extinct relative of the zebra.
T = Troll. Big ugly humanoid monster from folklore. Said to be made of
stone. The Rogue trolls seem to be based on the D&D version, which
are scaly, slimy, clawed, incredibily strong, and regenerate.
W = Wraith. A non-corporeal undead spirit.
X = Xeroc. Made-up monster, obviously a joke on the Xerox document
company, famed for making photocopiers.
Y = Yeti. An "abominable snowman", folklorish arctic creature.
Humanoid, but very big and hairy.

It's, ur, vile.
Neat. Thanks.
Some monsters have simply new names (but same character), as Kobold ->
Kestral, Snake -> Slime, Wolpertinger (figure from german mythology?) ->
Wrait, violet Fungi -> Venus Flytrap.
That is clearly visible also in DOS version sources - in comments are mostly
used just old names (like Rust monster, violet Fungi).

Valja
Aye, the version I printed earlier had the Unix names... but U was unicorn,
and G was griffin, and hardly harmless... amongst the deadliest on there,
IIRC
Well, as long as we're strolling down memory lane... 8^)
After all these years, I still find myself addicted to the "Advanced
Rogue" version 7.7 that I got from the AT&T Toolchest many, many years
ago. This was written for SVR2(!) UNIX(r) sometime around the mid-70s.
I would love to have this on a DOS/Windoze machine but, not knowing
anything about programming, I guess that's not going to happen. 8^(
It was an interesting variation. Had 9 characters you could play (I
always played a monk). Scoring was not based on how much gold you
accumulated but, on experience points (plus gold, if you won).
If someone knows of a DOS port for this version of rogue, I would be
forever in their debt!

Actually, G was Gnome (harmless) and U was Umber Hulk, which in my
PC version is called a Medusa.

apparently mine is 5.3... if that means owt.
Matters not anyway, as I've renamed and relevelled all the creatures to my
own taste.
Try Nethack (www.nethack.org). Somet"-1" like Very Very Very Advanced
Rogue. =)
