I could, but ... you have the source, its 5 minutes of work to create it
out of the source code.

Besides, its really boring to run through the dungeon as a wizard.

The Wizard Mode password doesn't work.  It's historical and just hasn't been removed.

It is? At least in 3.6 all one has is the encrypted password. A brute
force search would take a little longer than five minutes. Of course,
one can choose another password, but I'm just curious what the word
was.

Yes, but it's just fine for debugging a port.

I didn't type "brute force".... spoiler in the next message.

In traditional (BSD) rogue, the wizard's password is encrypted using
the standard Unix password encryption. This is different from the
scrambling of the save file.

The encrypted string is:

#define PASSWD "mTsdVv0Uvy4xY"

If you can decrypt that in 5 minutes, I'd like to borrow your computer.

I was under the impression that the source was not publicly available. I
decrypted the password in the gif files of the source on
http://home.wanadoo.nl/loche/rogue/index.html but that didn't work.
Incidentally, I got (in ROT13) "ongugho". I'd gladly do the work
given the encrypted password and the encription scheme.

Sorry, I made a mistake. The password I decrypted is from the Linux
sources not the gifs. This password did not work on my DOS version.
I could not find the definition of PASSWD or the encryption algorithm
in the gifs. I'll look some more...

That's the password from Timothy C. Stoehr's rogue, which was
distributed with Net/2.

mTsdVv0Uvy4xY, modified DES as used in Unix. But it's #ifdef'd out
in the MSDOS version.

Thanks. If it's not available in the DOS version then I guess the
point is moot. Too bad.

BTW, someone mentioned cracking that in 5 minutes. I assume then that
the key is available, otherwise I'd need one helluva processing array ;)
But that's another story... Thanks again.

Ah... so there is a unix version out there with a different encryption of
the password? Ok, then I retract my statement.

I have, using NetBSD, the Stoehr rogue, with doesn't use a one way function
for the encryption.

I've been desperate trying to recreate the memory I have of what I
think was Epyx Rogue on the Amiga. I remember a Rogue (just a basic
Rogue, not enhanced or varient) that only differed from the ASCII
version in that it used graphic characters and was in color. Was this
Epyx's version or does anyone know what this may have been?

Also I now have a Mac and am wondering what is the closest version to a
rogue + graphics for this platform. My net research tells me there was
an Epyx version for the Mac, but I have had no luck in finding it and I
assume it won't even work on modern systems. I also heard there was a
Mac roguelike from some other commercial company (Cassedy & Greene?)
Ring any bells?

thanks for any info someone could provide.

Recently, (about two days ago), this link was posted to this group (or
one of the other roguelikes):

I think you'd be VERY interested in checking it out...
