So here I am, palying and playing (most of the day in fact) Yep, I keep
getting killed by Trolls, I haven't met anything that hard although I did
polymorth something into an Ur-Vile which promptly killed me.
I have a few questions (I hope people don't ask them all the time)
1 - What do you do when held by a Venus Fly Trap? I couldn't kill it
becuase I wasn't right next to it and I couldn't get away. I threw things
at it but they wouldn't hit it. argh.
2 - What are all the monsters. So far from reading and playing I have
A=Aquator B=Bat C=Centaur D=Dragon E=Emu F=Fly Trap G=Griffin H=Hobgoblin
I=Ice Monster J=jabberwock K=Kestral L=Lepracaurn M=Medussa N=Nymph O=Orc
P=? Q=Quagga R=Rattlesnake S=Snake T=Troll U=Ur-Vile V=? W=Wraith X=Xerox
Y=Yeti and Z=Zombie.
What are P and V? I assume V is a vampire. . . What's the order of
'toughness'? I haven't really met anything that is harder than a Troll,
except due to Polymorph.
In case of emergancy is there anything special one should do if one meets
a Medusa etc?
Thanks
Don't waste to much time! :-)

hit (and walk) diagonally (use the 1, 3, 7, or 9 keys on your numeric keypad).

P is a phantom; it is usually invisible (i.e. you do not see the 'P', no pun
intended). but if you use a ring of see invisible or a potion of see
invisible, then you see it.

Bingo.

After troll, they rank roughly as follows:
Xeroc (actually easy to kill, just has a special ability...)
Ur-Vile
Vampire (lowers your level)
Griffin (VERY tough)
Medusa (confuses you)
Jabberwock (often asleep)
Dragon (shoots flame)

Yes: use your magic. i.e., if you meet a medusa, zap it with a wand of
polymorph or a teleport away, for example (or read a scroll of hold monster)
if you can. The point is NOT to wait till you are down to 3 HP and THEN
decide that you might want to use magic...

P is a Phantom. These are invisible and they "flit" like a bat - that is
they don't stand in one place while they kill you like most of the
monsters. V as you guessed is a Vampire. Vampires special ability is
that they permanently drain your hit points when they hit you.

Run away! :-) A Medusa's attack has a 1 in 4 (?) chance of confusing you
making them very difficult to kill. A potion of healing is useful for
curing confusion but you need lots of them so this is not overly useful.
The best way to kill a Medusa is to hit it with arrows from a distance.

I hope this helps.
Just stand toe to toe (or toe to leaf) and punch the crap out of it.
Make sure hit points are up.

I found that throwing a potion of confusion helps you get away. It
confuses you, so why not confuse it. It seems that they can only confuse
you once, so confuse them....get unconfused yourself (takes a little
while), then got toe to toe.
Just wait till you see a Griffin!! Big bastards!!
JB
Urviles and Griffins are probably the worst monsters. Keep an eye on
your hit points and keep polymorph handy!!
After fighting a few of these, those trolls will seem easy.
Suzy
Actually, if you get deep enough, the medusas are what does you in.
Also very nasty are the jabberwocks (harder than the griffins, but many
times asleep) and of course the Dragons are THE hardest monster.
Ur-Viles, actually, are not THAT hard. If you can hit them, then they
are quite possible to defeat. The problem is you need to have approx.
70 HP (and good strenght and a decent armor) to have a chance with an
Ur-vile face to face when you do not want o use magic.
Griffins and Medusas, OTOH, are practically impossible to defeat without
magic unless you have an incredibly strong character, something around
90 HP with 22+ strenght, a two handed sword, and good armor, and even
then it's a tough battle.
Also, I DID manage to defeat a Jabberwock face to face without magic -
once!
Medusas, Dragons, and Jabberwocks are the hardest, as you have said.

I think of the wand of "drain life" as the Medusa Slayer.
It still works when confused.

Got trapped in a corridor between two Ur-Viles this morning.
Died again.

I've killed a number of them by the
"hit then run in a circle", or the
"hit then hide in a maze"
tricks.
Hiding in a maze doesn't work on all versions of rogue.
Running in a circle (from room to room) does, but
of course you risk getting trapped between the monster you're
fleeing and another wandering monster (see this morning's death).

Ur-viles are much nastier than trolls. I've only ever met one, thought.
Griffins are nasty as well.

Another trick to use with Medusas (this also works with babblers and
gorgons in MAG, and Umber hulks in pchack) is to fight it in a corridor,
especially a dead end. This way, if you get confused, you can keep
pressing the direction key and it will only register as a move if you
either attack the medusa or move away from it. The problem with
confusion is the chance of making a move to the side which doesn't
attack the creature, but lets it attack you for that move; being in a
corridor prevents this. Mind you, it is usually better to avoid these
creatures in the first place.

V is indeed a vampire. P is a phantom, but you don't see it unless
you've quaffed a potion of "see invisible" or are wearing a ring of
"see invisible", so P's don't actually appear on the screen very often
even when they're killing you.

Yeah, but not only are Griffins worse than Ur-Viles, they're
MORE worse than Ur-Viles than Ur-Viles are than Trolls.
(There ought to be a way to say that in English, but I don't
think this was it).
When you start to see Griffins, Medusas, Jabberwocks and Dragons,
forget about killing monsters, put on that ring of stealth, and
dash down to level 26 to find the Amulet.
I'm looking for a faq or similar thing where I can get general
rogue info. List of potions and scroll, rings and stuff and what they
do, stats for weapons and monsters..etc. can anyone help me?
I dont come on here, so please email me directly...
later...
Allen.
