Hi there rogue-ees! I have no idea if anyone reads this newsgroup
anymore so I figured I'd post something to see if I can get any
discussion going.
I've been playing rogue for years off an on and just recently started
being obsessed with it again. I've been doing fairly well too, better
than I'd ever done before. Not winning the blasted game, though, but
that's the story of my life.
My biggest problem seems to be that I'm doing fairly well in a game,
getting up there in the levels...then I run out of food! Anyone have a
good solution for this? I mean, if I don't come across any food, what am
I supposed to do?
My other big enemy is those dang Aquators. If I don't get a ring of
protect armor, they generally smoke me after I come across a few of
them. Or they don't help my plight at all. Any advice anyone??
That's all. Happy playing.

The best way to defeat an Aquator is to wear leather armor....NOT
studded leather armor, either. If you're lucky, you can find good
leather armor and then enchant it until it's supertough.

You didn't mention rings specifically in this part of your post, but just
in case you weren't aware, be advised that wearing rings will cause you
to go through food faster. I've heard different theories as to what the
"multiplier" effect is, but most everyone agrees that wearing rings all
the time will burn food. Except the ring of slow digestion, of course,
which has the opposite effect, and at least counters the effect of
another ring you might be wearing. Some have even proposed that you
still get slow digestion even if wearing another ring, but who knows?

When you wear rings, your body uses energy much faster, so you
need to eat more often. Don't keep your rings on all the time.
If you have a ring of regeneration (makes your hit points heal
quickly, i.e. rise quickly after you've been hit), only wear it
during battle with a dangerous monster, and immediately afterwards.
Other rings (stealth?) can be worn only during the critical time,
after level 17 or so, when you're running downstairs as quickly as
possible to get the amulet.

I don't know how often you eat, but I find if I wait until I feel weak
before I eat, I have plenty of food to make it through until I get killed
by a griffin.

I usually keep at least two sets of armor on me. I have one set of armor,
usually a scale mail if I can find one, that I just carry with me, and only
put on to bless with a "bless armor" scroll. The other set of armor is
"expendable". I wear it around, let it get hit by aquator, and if it gets
to damaged, replace it with some new armor lying around. Of course, if the
second set is leather armor, I don't have to worry about aquators at all.
Then, when I'm safely past the aquator levels (level 17, if memory serves),
I toss the old armor and put on the deluxe set!
Sometimes you get lucky and find +2 leather armor, and then several bless
armor scrolls, but that happens about as rarely as finding a maintain armor
ring.
