I just started playing NetHack version 3.2.0 but I am used to earlier versions.
As a knight, I found an item I didn't know before:

What do you want to wear? [dg or ?*]
You finish your dressing maneuver.
The conical hat glows black for a moment.
You feel like sitting in a corner.
B - an uncursed +2 cornuthaum

What's the deal with this helmet? It seems to curse itself some times and
sometimes not.

Are you *sure* that's a cornuthaum and not a dunce cap? I don't think
cornuthaums auto-curse, but dunce caps do.

The dunce cap is an all-around Bad Thing, unless your intelligence is already
less than 6. The cornuthaum is useful only to wizards.

Of course since this one is +2, if it is indeed a cornuthaum you have a
dilemma.

A cornuthaum is a typical Wizard's cap -- tall, pointed, and with
stars and moons all over it.

And I think your other question is 'what is a dunce cap?' :) A dunce
cap is also a tall pointed hat; supposedly a long time ago in America,
teachers would make students who were bad sit in the corner and wear a
'dunce cap'. :)

Other folk posted what they are but here's what they DO
(in NH anyways)
Cornuthaum: +1 CHA and clairvoyance but only if you're
a wizard, else -1 CHA
Dunce Cap: INT (and WIS?) are cut in half
