It will also rustproof armour, but that's about it... You could
actually grease anything, but that would be of little use.

I haven't found any grease yet to experiment yet with in Nethack, but
in a game of AD&D about 5 years ago someone found a VERY nasty use for
grease.
A wizard was being attacked by someone in our party. They cast a grease
spell at the spot the person was standing. The person slipped and fell,
breaking two potions he was carrying and causing a corrosive effect on
his hip joint. Then, the wizard lit the grease on fire. Needless to
say, the poor guy was in pain for a while.
I haven't seen anything this cool happen in Nethack yet, but I'm sure
I'll get there...

It *IS* useful to grease your cloak and your boots (even if
you have already rustproofed them): monsters with a "grab"
attack won't get a hold on you...of course you have to
re-grease 'em after such an attack, but it is nice to get
this message that this giant eel's attempt to drown you
has failed...
