Hi all,

I don't usually post YASDs, as you would get pretty fed up of hearing
from me! However, I thought this one might be of some interest, as to
my mind at least it proves that an ascension is possible with AC 10
all through the game.

This is likely to be a fairly long and spoily post, you have my
apologies for all the reading!

A bit of background first - I have been playing with conducts for my
past few ascensions, as I have ascended all but Knight and Caveman
classes, and haven't really tried with these two as they don't
interest me in the slightest. One (unofficial) conduct I really wanted
to try was naked, but then I decided to extend this to AC 10 all game.
So, no armour allowed, no casting protection, wearing a ring of
protection, donating to a priest, praying for AC points etc... The
only one I would sort of allow was polymorphing into a creature with
better base AC, as magic resistance may be hard to come by in some
games. So, if I walked into a polymorph trap with no MR I wasn't going
to quit the game, but I would never polyself intentionally. Hope this
makes sense...

I started with Knights, as I sort of wanted to ascend one. The best
attempt made it to the Castle, but then died going back to the Quest,
I forget how. Then I moved on to Monks (one of my favourite classes),
my best attempt completed the Quest and managed to kill Rodney before
running into a master mind flayer and panicking. Doh!

So, I started with Wizards. Magicbane as a first gift is very nice, as
without it I was relying on an early wish for magic resistance. There
are other advantages, but to be honest this was the main one!

There have been many wizards who died very early on, and even more who
died in the middle of the dungeon. However, two days ago Joe the
Neutral Human Female Wizard entered the Dungeons of Doom with a
spellbook of stone to flesh, a magic marker and various mediocre
potions and scrolls. On the first turn, my CoMR was removed and no
armour was worn for the rest of the game.

The early game went fairly easily, a very early ring of regeneration
made life a lot easier. I always do the early game by going to
Minetown, then back up and down to Sokoban, then back to finish the
mines once I have the wands and experience from Sokoban. Minetown
didn't provide anything of interest, altar was of no use. At the
Oracle level, the blessed spellbook of force bolt I started with was
blanked and rewritten as a spellbook of ID. Sokoban provided a BoH.
Nothing much in the rest of the mines, apart from a bones pile which
gave a spellbook of sleep.

An altar on dlvl 4 provided me with Magicbane, as after doing the
mines and sokoban my starting quarterstaff was in need of replacement
with a better weapon.

nothing much else until the Castle, a couple of genocides got rid of
electric eels (terrified of having my =oLev exploded) and c (don't
want to walk over one of their corpses while blind).

The castle wand provided the first wishes of the game, which went on:
1. The Eyes of the Overworld, for backup magic resistance, astral
vision which is very nice, and never being blinded.
2. The Staff of Aesculapius, now I had the Eyes for MR. Hungerless
regeneration is very nice, and level drain resistance is VITAL when
surrounded by V or W
3. Spellbook of finger of death
4. Magic marker
(I already had some scrolls of charging, so didn't waste a wish on
these)

The rest of the wishes were saved, and never used. The back rooms of
the Castle also had Frost Brand in, which went into a bag purely for
the score.

Back up to the Quest, which was a piece of cake. The Dark One was a
pushover! Then back to sokoban, where all my spare spellbooks were
polypiled and I indulged in a little nurse dancing.

The rest of the game was fairly straighforward, up until the moment of
my demise on the Astral Plane. I had killed Famine, and was suffering
a bit from the hordes of priests and angels. So I decided to teleport
all the enemies away, forgetting where I had left Famine's corpse... I
guess you all know what happened next! However, in my mind if a
character is capable of getting to the Astral Plane they are capable
of ascending, and it's only my stupidness that prevented it.

I will be trying this conduct again, but will probably have a break
for a bit. I hope someone has found this interesting! As far as I'm
aware there has not been an AC 10 conduct before, if not I'd love to
get the first! Hopefully my next attempt will manage the final
level...

cheers,
Joe

Mind that naked is not the same as AC 10. You can have AC:10 and still
wearing -1 gloves and cloaks, for example, thus allowing you to wield
cockatrice corpses, and have a MC of 2 or even 3, and also MR.

Very impressive!

this did occur to me, but I decided to do it naked for the extra
challenge! Although there were a few instances when a pair of -1
gauntlets of power, or a -1 robe would have come in very useful...

I'm sorry, I'm new. What happened next? You teleported Famine's
corpse? Is that bad? Don't leave me hanging!

Exposing the Riders to the teleport force (zaps or explodes) will
resurrect them and place them adjacent to you immediately.

(Touching the corpse will resurrect them as well, BTW.)

Oh, schnikes. Thanks for filling me in.

I'm sorry! I wasn't thinking too hard when I wrote that, my sincere
apologies.

As mentioned above, when you try to teleport a Rider or the corpse of
one, it appears next to you. While I was on 58HP with no armour was
not a good time to have this happen, and I think I was dead the next
turn.

Cheers,
Joe

Hi Joe

I completed a naked acension lst year - here is the dump

http://alt.org/nethack/userdata/TheWumpus/dumplog/1239100775.nh343.txt

Additional conducts were aethiest, genocideless, polyitem & polyself.

I didn't take notes, unfortunately, and sadly the ttyrecs were lost in
the recent server trouble at nao.

My main memories are these -

-MC 0 is a greater challenge than AC 10. Orcus's level was especially
nasty.
-Fundamental strategy was to stay out of melee range of absolutely
everything whenever possible.
-Early game offense was mainly thrown daggers. Late game, magic
missile and FoD ruled supreme.
-Used an early wish for Magicbane.
-Sokoban was AoR, I think.
-Castle wand was 0:3 - used at least 5 wishes for magic markers to
write just about every spellbook in the game.
