I wrote this a while back, but it took me a looong time to get around
to coverting the screen output into usable form. Ended up using a 9600
baud serial console to my sparc to slow down the output, and make it
so I could cut and paste. A recent post of mine said I ascended
without a free action ring, but looking at this, I was apparently
wrong. That'll teach me to open my mouth without having data at hand
to look at.
----
Finally got around to it. I had taken 4 characters as far as Medusa,
and only two have ever completed the quest. This one seemed unlucky to
start, as on level 1 I donned a helm of opposite alignment after
dropping it on the handy Lawful altar that stated it was uncursed. Of
course, trying to remove it proved futile, as it auto-cursed. Here I
am, 150 moves into the game, and I'm thinking I've screwed myself for
the rest of the game. However, on dungeon level 3 or so, I found a
scroll of destroy armor, which luckily chose the helm to destroy,
rather than the +3 shield.
At that fateful junction of the Gnomish Mines and the main Dungeon, I
did like I do with all my dwarfs, and headed down into the Mines. My
pet dog Scooby picked off a number of gnomes, and managed to work his
way up to a large dog by the time we made it to the mine town, and
along the way I tamed a puppy, which I promptly named Scrappy ;)
Minetown was one of my old bones. 4 cockatrices, two red dragons, a
werewolf, a warhorse, a gauntlet stealing nymph, and 4
headstones/statues. I headed back up into the mines to pick up a few
levels, and some gloves, so I could handle it the easy way. Around
level 8 or so, I ventured back into Minetown, and after getting lucky,
and scoring a cockatrice corpse, made quick work of the rest of the
inhabitants. I found so much loot here, it was ridiculous. The temple
was Lawful, and I used it as my main base for the next 15 thousand
turns or so. Ended up with a magic marker, a magic lamp, ring of slow
digestion, amulet of reflection, cloak of magic resistance, a number
of spellbooks, a pile of scrolls, and a liquor cabinet full of
potions. Did a dilute fest, and had a dozen or so potions of holy
water, which I used to bless all the identify scrolls, and find out a
lot about my newly found loot. Turns out I had found a luckstone on my
way through the mines, which probably helped with the to-hit calc on
taking out those dragons. I had red dragon scales, but stuck with my
+2 dwarfish mithril for the rest of the mines.
Headed further down, and right below Minetown was a bones file, which
ended up netting me some more gems, a second magic lamp, assorted
potions and scrolls, and a magic lamp. I picked up a blessed spellbook
of identify, but with 16mp and an 80%+ failure rate, it didn't do much
good. I ended up with a robe later on, and when wearing only that, I
had a reasonable ~30% failure rate, which I used to identify a lot
later on.
Ended up with both my dogs turning into vampire lords, and made quick
work of the rest of the mines. Picked up two more pets, and turned
them into an olog-hai and an earth elemental, so I had a nice brute
squad going. Somewhere along the line, I succesfully sacrificed for
Mjollnir, and enhanced the hammer skill to expert. Picked up the
silver saber from the watch captain who no longer needed it, and after
enhancing that to skilled (I think, not sure what the max on saber is
for the Valk), worked two-weapon up to it's max.
It took me forever, but I finally hit level 14, and did the quest.
Used a tinning kit to turn every giant I could find into handy snacks,
and put the hurt on Lord Surtur. Wasn't paying attention, hit u
instead of y, and lost my +2 speed boots to lava. Against all odds, a
giant on that level had earlier put on a pair of speed boots, so I
quickly had a new pair. Then took another walk on the hot side, and
lost my second pair to lava. Lord Surtur went down quickly, once I
prevented him from escaping up the stairs (easier said than done I
admit).
In a throne room, I killed a grey dragon, and made myself a grey
dragon scale mail. Amazingly enough, I found a 3rd set of speed boots.
Swapped between them and boots of levitation to cross Medusa's pond,
and made a pretty statue of her. This was my first time I've actually
had a character who could cross the water, so I was venturing into
unknown territory here. I had ascended a few times previous by playing
around in debug mode, and teleporting to the astral plane, but I'd
never actually ventured down into Gehennom. Slaughtered the ever
present minotaur easily enough, and kept going. By now, I'd started to
use a pick axe to clear out everything between the up/down stairs, and
I kept at it in the mazes. The castle was fun. With warning from the
Orb of Fate, the eels were trivial, and with my hp approaching 200 by
then, almost nothing hurt. I cleared out the castle, and left the wand
of wishing alone. I wasn't sure if it would explode when put into a
bag of holding, and I didn't want to lose it in an accident (I'd
already lost my ring of slow digestion to a trap). There was a pair of
lawful altars on level 14, one in a temple, the other standalone, so I
turned that into my base of operations. I used the standalone altar,
as I didn't want my pets killing the priest before I'd chatted with
him enough. With the help of Ludios, I acquired -9 AC from the priest,
and then let my minions at him :). This left me about 250k, which came
in handy later.
By now, the entire dungeon, mines and sokoban had been cleared. I knew
just about every potion and scroll (with the notable exceptions of
genocide and charging), and had learned a dozen or so spells (most at
60%+ failure rates, half of them forgotten). I wandered back down to
level 27 (the castle, I'd forgotten about being able to #invoke the
Orb of Fate), and picked up the wand of wishing. First wish of the
game, I used to order up two blessed scrolls of charging. I got
stiffed, and ended up with one. Next time I (z)apped the wand, it did
nothing. Well, that was fun, ended up with a (0:1) wand. Read the
scroll, and charged it back up to (1:3). Next two wishes were a pair
of magic markers, and then 2 scrolls of genocide. Wiped out both mind
flayer species, and then used the markers to go to town. Wrote up a
couple charging scrolls for later, and then enchanted weapons and
armor. Accidently took my silver saber too far, but had a spare, which
I took to +5 (damn disenchanter later moved to back to +4 for me, how
thoughtful of it). Genocided ; as well, as I was worried about
potential problems in the water plane.
Decided to venture down to the VOTD, to see what life would be like
down there. Put the smackdown on a few liches, ate a few wraiths, and
generally had an easy time of it. My weapons were at +5 and +4, my AC
was probably under -30, 18/** Str, 21 Dex, 20 Con and 250+ hp.
Took my first steps into Gehennom, and noticed it looked a lot like
the labryinth above. Was a pain in the arse to get my pets down there,
with the 1 pet at a time feature of the down stair. Most monsters
weren't very difficult in the first level, so after finding the down
stair, and making a corridor to it from the up stair, went down a
level. Putting on my trusty blind fold showed that there was a & that
was named Asmodeus. This was going to be interesting, my first
encounter with a major demon. He actually died fairly quickly, and
wasn't a problem. Level 31 was more maze, and then level 32 was a
giant swamp. This was the infamous lair of Juiblex, who I remember
hearing had a nasty poison attack (I didn't have access to any
spoilers for the last half of this game, so I was literaly playing
blind). Thanks to a blessed unicorn horn, the sickness attack wasn't a
problem, and he died fairly easily. I swapped out my speed boots for
levitation once he was dead, as it made the swamp much easier to get
across.
Baalzebub on level 34 was easy, and level 36 had the entrance to
Vlad's tower. I passed it by for now, and kept heading deeper. Orcus
town was level 39, and he was a pain. Orcus would teleport in, zap his
wand of death, and then teleport away after I hit him a single time,
making it very difficult to deal with him. A few turns after he died,
I had a L curse my saber, causing it to fall out of my hand (shouldn't
it actually weld itself to your hand?). Headed back up to my stash
(the SLOOOOW way, again forgetting that I could teleport there with
the Orb), and wrung the last charge out of my wand to wish up a 4th
magic marker, so I could write a few more scrolls. Genocided L and R
here, and got lucky with a +5 -> +7 jump on Mjollnir. Wasn't sure if
my saber would handle going from +5 -> +7, so left it at +5. Took my
AC down to -40, and started feeling like I could really make this one
happen.
A little bit of potion quaffing brought me up to ~375hps, and I had
increased my mp to around 70. I had a whole new set of pets, with my
favorite being a purple worm named Gulp.
At this point, I *still* didn't have see invisible, so I let myself be
crowned, just so I could see the invisible baddies. It had been highly
annoying in Gehennom without see invisible, as it seemed half the
monsters were invisible. Even though I was invisible, no matter how
many stalkers I ate, I never acquired see invisible.
Sucked up my courage, and did from Orcus on down all in one shot.
Worked my way down to level 47, which I found out was the bottom by
walking over the square while hunting for the down stairs. Went back
to Vlad, and quickly laid him flat. I was stuck with a single pet
silver dragon, who I was secretly hoping would croak so I could steal
his scales. The wizard died easy enough, although he was over his moat
at the time. I thought I had just screwed myself, and was about to
quit in disgust when I remember a post on rgrn some time back that
mentioned freezing the water. A quick zap of a wand of cold, and there
was a book just waiting for me.
Performed the ritual, and lost my poor dragon to the newly formed moat
(do you take a hit for that?). Down in the sanctum is the one place I
had any problem throughout Gehennom.
The Wizard summoned his twin a few times, and also Yeenogu, so I was
fighting Moloch, his priest, two Wizards, Yeenoghu, and several dozen
assorted baddies. I found out that soldiers don't respect Elbereth,
and this is the first place I used a ring of conflict. The Wizard
killed Yeenoghu for me, but I used several potions of full healing
before everyone was dead and I could collect the Amulet.
Going back up, I had to kill the Wizard only a few times, but ended up
having to redo at least a dozen levels after being teleported down. I
also had a few things cursed, which I fixed when I made it back to
level 14 and my stash. Blessed everything I had, and stripped to what
I felt was the least I needed to carry. I had been on the edge of
being burdened the whole time, so I trimmed quite a bit. After it was
all over, I realized I brought far more than I needed, but at the
time, I thought I really did need 12 wands of digging, and all kinds
of other crap. I had several blessed tins of nurse meat, as they
require a single turn to open, and work just like a full healing
potion. I had found a ring of levitation, but still had yet to acquire
teleportation control, and so the entire time I was in the dungeon, I
was wearing a ring of teleportation control, leaving me a single
usable ring slot. One of the times I ate the ole Rodney, I was
rewarded with teleport control. I also did a quick sac to ensure I
could pray on the planes if need be. I picked up 4 potions of
confusion and 4 scrolls of gold detection, and worked my way back up.
By now, every pet was dead, so I had to venture into the planes
without a sidekick.
Before entering the earth plane, I put on my ring of levitation, and
decided to go with free action for the second slot, now that I could
use both. Killed the newly ressurected Wizard in only one or two
turns, and then quickly dipatched the minotaur and elf king. After
finding the portal, I started to use those wands of digging I'd
brought along. This is where I realized that unlike Gehennom, where
each charge only clears a single square, the wands worked like I was
used to, and cleared 8 or so squares at a time. I think I ended up
using 4 charges, and I brought along around 70 charges of digging.
Fire and Water were just as easy, with Air taking the longest, at
about 50 turns.
Upon reaching the Astral plane, I dumped a huge pile of wands of
digging. I think I brought along 10 wands of digging, which was
complete overkill. I had 15 or so potions of full healing, and a few
other potions of extra/reg healing. I had a few wands of
fire/lightning to use to engrave with, and two amulets of life saving.
I was still wearing my amulet of reflection, but had an amulet of
lifesaving in my main inventory incase I needed to quickly put it on.
It was slow going, and my angel died towards the end, but I eventually
found the correct altar. Had a scary moment when I killed a barb, and
his weapon was the +5 Vorpal Blade. That was the one moment that I
realized how useful an amulet of lifesaving could be. I don't think I
needed a potion, especially once I swapped out my levitation ring for
regeneration. Satiated myself before stepping into the portal, and
only needed to eat once to keep myself stuffed.
Without further ado, here is the dump:

You might want to turn off the show_experience once you get
to XL 14. You can miss important status information if there
isn't enough room on the bottom line.
Well done!

Scrolls of destroy armor are great. You take off all the
armor you can take off, then read them. :-)

Tell me about it. I came dangerously close to killing myself from
choking on my food, just so I could eat two stalkers within a few
turns of each other. No matter how many I ate, I wouldn't ever get the
intristic. I became invisible by zapping myself, perhaps that
mattered?

I would assume so, as they are considered human. However, I was a
dwarf, so I didn't have to worry about that. When I say they act like
a full healing, they do so by healing you. You don't get the hitpoint
increase like you would from a potion, but they will heal you to the
top when you eat it.
> You know that Orb you were carrying is a crystal ball!
I never even thought to connect the crystal ball with using it to find
the portals. To me, it was just a luckstone that halved my damage.

I've heard that, and I'll probably try it the next time I ascend.
