You've already loaded Thunderbird. Since you're switching NSPs consider
also switching newsreader software. There are plenty to chose from and
most have better filtering capability than Thunderbird. Every so often
I think about switching from XPN to one with even better filtering - I'd
like to be able to mark-read new threads started by posters from certain
NSPs but read their replies in existing threads.
As to Google, please consider them as a backup. It's nice to be able to
read and post through two NSPs in case one is down. I rarely post with
Goggle these days but I do keep my Google account active as a backup.
Once you've used a newsreader with filtering it's a major step back to
use Google but they do have their archive and they are web based so they
work when you're away from home on travel.

Me too. It's one of many to chose from but it is one of the best ones.
