Hello!

My internet provider tells me that they are gonna shut down their
news-server. So I ask if anyone here knows any free usenet server I
could use? Please don't answer "use google groups", because I want to
use news from my mail-client.

When my former ISP shut down its news server, I switched to Eternal
September (at the time, named Motzarella). I've been happy with them
ever since.

Alternatively I'm doing reasonably well with nntp.aioe.org .

I completely forgot I still have a freeshell account!

So, continuing this off-topicness, what newsreaders do you use?

In the distant past I liked Xnews. In the really distant past I
used nn.

You've already loaded Thunderbird. Since you're switching NSPs consider
also switching newsreader software. There are plenty to chose from and
most have better filtering capability than Thunderbird. Every so often
I think about switching from XPN to one with even better filtering - I'd
like to be able to mark-read new threads started by posters from certain
NSPs but read their replies in existing threads.

As to Google, please consider them as a backup. It's nice to be able to
read and post through two NSPs in case one is down. I rarely post with
Goggle these days but I do keep my Google account active as a backup.
Once you've used a newsreader with filtering it's a major step back to
use Google but they do have their archive and they are web based so they
work when you're away from home on travel.

Me too. It's one of many to chose from but it is one of the best ones.

Being both lame and lazy I use Pine when I bother at all. Normally, however, I just use Google Groups...

Another Xnews user here; I also sometimes look through older posts
using Google Groups (although I never post through there). Also used
Thunderbird in the past. Have been thinking about finding another news
client, though.

Did you go with eternal-september.org, news.indvidual.net or one of the
many others?

Thanks. I should have known that from your default Organization line "A
noiseless patient spider". Sounds like a fun rename of an existing
early game monster.

In the *distant* past ForteAgent. After quaffing a blessed potion of
enlightenment (when it comes to operating systems) I've dealt with tin,
Pan, slrn and Gnus. Been very happy with slrn for years now.

Thanks guys. This has been useful. Makes me pine for the days when I had Gnus running. I'll try to change :)

Cheers
