Oh my. After I ascended my archeologist (see my post some days ago), I
really wanted to go back to normal life: Playing one game of nethack
per day, not more, that would last only 15 minutes on average. To
ensure that, I decided to make it a little harder than it alrealy is
and went for some voluntary challenges: Illiteracy and (nearly forced)
genocide-less.
Oh well.
My first character who started after the demigod-archeologist, an
orcish barbarian, has ascended now...weird. Really weird. And it
took me more than 15 minutes per day.
Here's the story, very long as always:
He started with amazing stats: STR 18/01, DEX 18, CON 18, but was dumb
as bread: INT 7, WIS 7. "Me strong. Me in good health. But me cannot
understand what painted on that stacks of toilet paper our tribe
shamans have. But no worry. Me Strong. All other soon dead."
He found a platemail +1 on dlvl 2, which he not really needed because
every monster dropped dead before it could land a blow on him. He
easily descended to minetown (leaving his pet behind) where he found a
bonesfile from a previous healer of mine. "Wow. Me heard that town has
many shops. Has weapon shop. Has food shop (yuk!). Has light shop. But
why also has toilet-paper shop? Silly gnomes!" The only heritage of
said healer was a *large* stash of spellbooks and scrolls. Oh my. They
all were sold to to the general store.
The altar was co-aligned, and the healer had angered the priest there,
and so minetown was flooded with insects. I had to pray twice, once
because there were just too many a's to handle, and once because I
put on cursed gloves by mistake and wanted to uncurse them. Both times
I was rewarded with protection, so now I had AC -6, not bad for the
mines! :-)
I also ate a tengu there which conferred teleportitis - argh! I only
managed to find a ring of teleport control later after the castle,
which made the game up until then *very*, *very* annoying. My
turncount is so high because I had to walk every distance at least
twice because random teleportation kicked in! Grmpf.
In the mines I stepped on a poly trap and became a black dragon, then
on a level teleporter which brought me two dlvl2 right in front of a
shop. "Me big dark dragon. Me foul breath. Hey shopkeeper, wanna
smell? Huh? Shopkeeper, where you are? And, more important, where your
money and wands?" I forgot that his equipment would be disintegrated,
too...
Tons of sacrifices later, I was 'rewarded' with Cleaver. Oh well, better
than nothing, I guess.
Sokoban was a pain, as I knew that no scroll of earth would save me
this time...but I fortunately made no mistake. But the zoo on top of
sokoban was the scariest fight I ever had: Among other things a master
mind flayer, a (master?) lich and a black dragon! And I had no
reflection. But I saw that a werefoo put on an amulet and stepped into
the door to fight me. I killed it and thought: "Monsters stupid, all
attack me and die. But monsters not stupid with things. Use only things
good for 'em. If amulet good for monster, amulet good for me, too!
Ugh!" and boldly stepped in, took the amulet and put it on, hoping for
reflection. The next turn the black dragon blasted me, and hooray! It
*was* reflection! Who dares wins. :-D (It later turned out to be the
guaranteed amulet, but why? Who could have taken it from the "Elbereth"
square?) I then ignored the black dragon and fought the master mind
flayer from a distance with daggers and wands and killed it, but
meanwhile the dragon had dropped my hitpoints to 15/139 and so I prayed.
Reward? Stormbringer! :-)
I then killed all shopkeepers (except the obvious) to get money, and
collected a magic harp and a magic whistle in the process - which were
kind of useless in combination with stormbringer. :-/
Yes, stormbringer. It was better than Cleaver, and more importantly, it
was blessed and rustproof, things I could never hope to bestow on other
artifacts. But it had also a very chaotic nature. "Ugh, leocrotta corpse
really heavy. Must hurry to altar. Human there, you in the way, get lost!
*whack* Huh? Why insect swarm here?" Stormbringer managed to anger the
minetown priest, so I fled in fear of losing my protection, leaving my
stash behind. :-(
Found boots of speed, but was still xlvl 13 when I reached the castle,
too low for the quest, but I had no means to cross the water, so I dug
a hole in Medusa's island. Went back up and killed Medusa. Perseus'
statue had it all: The sack, blessed +2 scimitar, shield of reflection
and boots of levitation. Funny. :-)
Murphy stood up for the RNG and placed a (0:1) wand in the castle. My
first (0:1) wand ever, with an illiterate barbarian. Oh well.
Wished for +2 GDSM.
The valley had 2 wraith corpses, so I could embark on the quest, which
yielded a wand of death and a wand of sleep which made the nemesis an
easy fight. But now I had to enter Gehennom and still was burdened, so
the castle wand was wrung out for a bag of holding.
The first item I found in Gehennom was a helm of opposite alignment,
which lost me my protection. Argh. Argh! I now had only AC -11.
Since illiteracy is a difficult thing I played it safe and (don't
laugh!) bribed Asmodeus and Baalzebub, especially because some arch
and master liches were near them. This was the first time I enjoyed
Gehennom! Unenchanted equipment meant bad AC and a +0-Weapon, which
made some interesting fights. I found a magic lamp which was used as
a light source.
And then I encountered 2 master mind flayers who sucked me twice. That
I forgot some identified items (ID'ing is very hard to do with
illiteracy!) was okay, but that I had to remap *every* *single* level
from dlvl 1 to the bottom of Gehennom is just plain tedious, annoying
and stupid! The next time I'm unable to genocide those suckers I will
do a hardcopy of every level, I swear! What a stupid 'feature'.
When I reached the vibrating sphere, several levels were infected with
arch and master liches who were unkillable for me with my puny +0
stormbringer, so I decided to bless my magic lamp and wish for gauntlets
of power, raising my STR from 18/50 to 25, raising my STR bonus damage
from +3 to +6. I now went to Rodney with the following stats:
Xorphitus the Reaver St:25 Dx:18 Co:18 In:8 Wi:14 Ch:9 Chaotic
Dlvl:46 $:0 HP:309(309) Pw:29(29) AC:-10 Exp:19 T:77111
Note the low power - that meant only one teleport at will. Also the bad
AC made me uneasy, but I couldn't help it.
The fake tower was another dense moment: I was surrounded by a master
lich, an arch lich, Yeenoghu and 6 dragons! I calmly ignored them, put
on conflict, invoked the Heart of Ahriman, took of my cloak of
protection, put my oilskin cloak out of my bag, wore it, hacked my way
to the tower wall, zapped a wall of digging and entered - at 60
hitpoints. Phew. :-)
Getting the Book of the Dead was no problem, and I escaped Yeenoghu and
crew with my one and only controlled teleport on the way out. But now
I was really running low on potions of holy water because of all the
pesky liches...
The sanctum was no problem. Ascending then was a bigger one because of
all the levels which were infected with liches, but the best strategy
surprisingly was just to ignore them - worked well. On my way up, I
bought another 3 points of protection for 8400 gold apiece from the
valley priest, must have been one without access to recent news... :-)
The portal on the plane of earth was in the last cavern I checked
(greetings to Murphy!), and on the plane of Air I took out the one
item I saved for so long in my bag just for this moment: A crystal
ball! "Pretty glass. Please show me portal thingy, pretty please!
*kaboom*" Well, INT 8 isn't sufficient for that, it seems. :-)
So I had to remove Vlad's amulet of life saving and had to wear the
Amulet of Yendor - in the one place I really wanted my life to be
saved! Yikes. But I only needed 4 death rays until I had found the
portal.
On the astral plane I used my last(!) potion of holy water to uncurse
my blindfold...and used conflict, which is cheezy, but a compensation
for my bad equipment. The left (and wrong) altar had an angry high priest
who managed to lower my hitpoints to 16 before he finally decided to die.
The top altar had famine which I feared, so I went to the right next
which featured Death who was killed by an angel of Mitra, thank you very
much. :-) It was also the right altar:
An invisible choir sings, and you are bathed in radiance...--More--

The wererat is an @, and therefore ignores Elbereth.

I didn't think you could kill the mail daemon! :)
