Customising the ascii chars used, including monster colors?

Hi,

Is it possible to customise the monster colors used by Nethack - I
don't notice some of the darker colors from time to time which is a
cause for frustration.

Also, boulders show up on my system as an apostrophe, which makes
sokoban trickier than it needs to be - I'd like to change that too if
possible.

I'm on windows [sorry], and using IBM Graphics, running Nethack 3.4.3
locally.

Any tips appreciated,

TIA,

Nev

Not much browsing will result in you finding the file that has the
character assignments in it. Can't take more than a minute or two.

How could you possibly need to have your hand held in EVERYTHING you do
in life?

With this you can change the colors of the windows console:
http://bilious.homelinux.org/~paxed/wintermcolors.php

Vanilla doesn't have the ability to customize the color of monsters.
The only thing you can do is change the used colors with the option
"videocolors".

The next release of UnNetHack will allow you to change the color of
specific monsters in your config file:
MONSTERCOLOR='floating eye':lightmagenta

By replying you prove you are not lazy.

However you also add ZERO to this thread.

So you would do yourself and the world a great favour by being lazy
and not replying,

quite in agreement against the rudeness in the reply...

however, the point remains: also try and read the docs, there's the
info you are looking for ;)

Guys, RTFM/Google is implicit, just not helpful!

I lead a dev team and a support team.

Our users and even the support team ask questions every day which
***could** be answered with RTFM.

But we answer with details, links, etc - because that is how you build
your community.

OK. So I have read the guidebook in the past, and I missed the Boulder
option. I knew about the DUNGEON and MONSTERS options, but they don't
cover boulders or Color.

And I also know NAO uses a O instead of a ' for a boulder, so I
wondered if it was a compiled change, or optional change.

And after rereading the Guidebook, I'm still not sure if I can change
the color of specific monsters, or if you guys are referring to the
shading option - which doesn't do the trick.

So for anyone bothering to read this drivel, PLEASE, avoid the urge to
jump on a poster and tell them RTFM.

Instead, if you have the inclination, post something useful like a
link, etc.

Best Regards!

wasn't a 'rtfm', just making a point :/ sorry to read that you took it
that way...

anyway, about colors, as far as I can remember, you just can't change
them, unless you recompile the game, but maybe there's a feature I
can't remember right now...

anyway, try not to top-post either, or take it so personal, really was
just a point I was making...

It's very helpful when someone points out that I've been reading the

Total bullshit. If you were in such a position, you would have had
no problem determining issue resolutions about an ASCII or ANSI or any
other computer character definition.

I sense more impending total BULLSHIT...

Yeah, well written manuals, especially those from 20+ year old apps
like
this, are far more detailed than you or ANY of your dolting dipshit
"dev crew".

Again, you are SO UTTERLY FULL OF SHIT.

> OK. So I have read the guidebook in the past, and I missed the Boulder

That ain't all you missed. Either you are still an adolscent little
bitch, or
your mind is. Likely the latter, which is the worse of the two cases.

> I knew about the DUNGEON and MONSTERS options, but they don't

You are NOT a computer program developer.

> And I also know NAO uses a O instead of a ' for a boulder, so I

Yes, you also, however, need an IQ above 30. Between your lies
about being a program development leader and your pathetic grasp
of a basic 80 x 25 character screen, it can't be higher than 28.
I rescind my previous setpoint of 30+.

> And after rereading the Guidebook, I'm still not sure if I can change
> the color of specific monsters, or if you guys are referring to the
> shading option - which doesn't do the trick.

You first need a basic understanding of how the screen gets written
to to begin with.
It gets worse from there... for you. The lies about abilities
won't help at all.

> So for anyone bothering to read this drivel, PLEASE, avoid the urge to
> jump on a poster and tell them RTFM.

RTFM, idiot. is that better?

> Instead, if you have the inclination, post something useful like a

When you get to this special link, you READ, right?

You stupid twit! READ THE FUCKING MANUAL, you goddamned,
rules are meant to be broken, lying little fucktard!

Bullshit
Quoting and replying to your own post (top posting no less) shows
MORE utter stupidity.

Jeez, the little "dev team leader" could use a GOOGLE search mindset
too!
Every NetHack hint and help known to man is out there. Hell, it only
has set
numerous records for numerous computer related feats.

I'll bet my blind friend could get his PC to find it in a minute or
so.

WTF has this twit been doing for the last decade?

Am I the only one that thinks that a dope claiming to "lead a dev
team"
having problems with nethack character assignments as being indicative
of a false front?

Oh... I'm sorry... it must be all those fine drugs they have over
there.

Jeez... gimmie a break! This guy doesn't even rate tourist! (in so
many ways)

His point was in the part you snipped -- about in /his/ team they
humor users, even users who should have RTFM instead. Not a strong
point perhaps, but still ...

I also have to say that:

- Customization is one of the areas where you may need to ask around.
There are all the different OSes, user interfaces, IBMGraphics versus
whatever-the-other-is, configuration in NetHack versus in the OS ...

- The first response he got /was/ overly rude.

To add a bit of actual content to this long, mostly-useless thread:
Strange characters may also be caused by an incompatible codepage
setting in Windows. This old relict from DOS times can be changed
somewhere under Control Panel –> Regional Options (exact spot AFAIK
depends on Windows version). If you have something else than 437
(English/US) there, that might well be the reason for what you see.

I was spot on.

Now this is funny. The original poster - even a newbie! - feels the urge to
define the rules, what sort of answers to expect or not, while ignoring the
very basic rules himself. And the rudest poster here around talks about "an
insult to the group". You guys are great, really! :-)

Some retarded little bastard that is too dumb to know anything about
ASCII can hardly be believed when he claims to be a dev team lead.

I'm sorry, but THAT IS am insult to the entire group, and if you are

never learned anything from any parents or anyone else about anything.

The OP's posting was quite silly, and funny in that respect. I really
had a smile when he demanded "useful" contributions and wrote all that
crap before...

...but c'mon. That guy will soon notice what's going on here; I've seen
it so many times that some clueless newbies jump into a group new to
them and try to position their personality. That's a temporary issue;
or else a kill file will solve that smoothly. OTOH, your language seems
to not be a temporary issue; and that language *is* offending. YMMV.
