Hi,

while trying to ascend foodless atheist, a promising elven wizard
became generated.
Wimp started out with ?oL,?oCharg,?oMM,+FB,+Knock,!oGL,!oEH,!oB,
+1=oProt,=oPC,/oDig,(woodenFlute.
Wimp looked for a =oSD or poly thus she stayed not long at each
DLvl, but digged down when no special message (sink) poped up.
When she fell to DLvl 7 she found herself inside a 6x3 wand shop
with move ~300.
Wimp activated autopickup and took a little walk.
A wand priced 150, ..., a wand priced 233, ..., a zinc wand priced
666, ..., a long wand priced 888, ..., a wand priced 133.
Blink, what???
Scroll back. Yes, two different wands with base cost 500.
She closed the door and tried the first wand, byebye shopkeeper.

Here I saved, only to immediatly realizing my error. Wimp hadn't
marked every new wand with it's price and the message-buffer was
gone now, grumble.
For that error the savefile sat a week or so in a corner.
No, it was Wimp's fault, not mine, honestly. ;-)

After ascending Grysam, a problem arised: "What to do with Wimp"?
I decided to try a fast ascension.

I didn't want to waste such a good start, so I saved again
and started some elven wizards in discovery mode.
I tried some tactics from grysam and the pacifists and used
hints from Pat (abuse no bug), David (arch-lich) and Andreas
(command undead by reading).

After three dm-ascensions (10768,10544,9856 moves), the first with
about 10 die(y/n), the last one smooth I started the real one.
My fastet real-3.3.1-game was Gesz-Hea 9851 moves, but all tester
had mind-flayer accidents in the late game.

In order to ascend real fast there are some requirements,
you have to be very fast, you have to survirve and you need a
way to find your path.

First and third are obvious speed boots and magic mapping.
Ok, jumping is faster and kicked riding is an option, but in
the end of a day speed rules (especially in battle).

The middle one is more complicated. Surviving needs good
offense and good defense. The latter is high hitpoints,
all intrinsics, reflection, MR, MC and low AC. To avoid retreat
and heal up pauses regeneration is handy.

All this is achieved by polymorphing into an arch-lich, the
cold attack is enough offense in the beginning.
Downside is you cannot genocide arch-lichs.
Another advantage is the reduced food-consumption.
But you need several things to do so: poly polycontrol
and unchanging.

Reflection is "oR or SDSM, since unchanging is a " it's
SDSM actually.

To take advantage of all your posessions you need identify,
together with magic mapping this is a divination spell,
thus you need to be at least skilled in that profiency.
Your choice here is A, P, Rog, Ran and W.
After reviewing their pros and cons I looked at their
quest artifacts and thought, a combination of Key and
Eye was perfect.

So chaotic wizard is a good choice.

My wish-list was (in that order):
high priority:
2 blessed scrolls of charging
+3 speed boots
blessed ring of polymorph control
blessed amulet of unchanging
blessed wand of polymorph
+3 silver dragon scale mail
blessed spellbook of identify
the Master Key of Thievery
blessed spellbook of magic mapping

lower priority:
blessed bag of holding
2 cursed scrolls of genocide

blessed ring of levitation
blessed spellbook of jumping

Wimp had a =oPC already and a bunch of unided wands.
Also a u?oCharging was there, but neither holy water
nor blank paper.
And engrave-IDing is too expensive in our case.
So Wimp wished for 2b?oCharging (got 2b), +3 speed boots (+0),
wore them, recharged the now empty wand, wished for a b"oU
and took a break.
Two fast wishes left, what next?
Wimp wished a b+ID and ided her posessions, no /oPoly, but
a !oPoly. -> arch-lich HP ~120 HD 25

Since such a low level character can't cast MM successfully,
Wimp wished for +3 SDSM (+0) and saved the time consuming
wish for later.

Now Wimp hurried down, she climbed all downstairs immidiately
and when locating them took to much time she dug down.
She fought high level enemies and left low levels alone.
She looted a leprechaun hall (no tele, but 13k$), two
bee-hives (16 lumps but satiated) and met a priest for
5 points of protection.

At Dlvl18 ~t2500 Wimp filled her inventory so she used the last
wish for a b(BoH, which sadly took ~380 turns.

She descended further, met a muddy level and hunted sea-monsters.
At Dlvl25 she reached medusas isle, dug down, found herself in
a maze, dug down, a dark room in the center, two steps voila the
downstairs. Now Wimp reached stronghold.
She used her flute to drive a giantic fan and gained luck and
Xp(->12) that way.
Btw, is there a way to determine your real XL while polymorphed?

In a small room in the corner she found a chest and inside a
/oW(0:3). Her stats so far:

She wished for the Master Key of Thievery, b+MMap, =oLev and recharged
the wand.
Now she visited the armoury, to no avail (Ok, +0[GoD).

Wimp entered the VotD, let herself get surrounded by 5 wraith
and levelteled to Dlvl 13 (quest). Two corpses later she reached
XL 14 and soon thereafter she received permission to hunt the
Dark One.

She ate some tengu (tele) and dug straight down. The Dark One is
a wimp (at least compared to Wimp).
She invoked the Eye and reached the VotD, here she genocided h.

Her exessive use of digging so far left her with only one /oDig(0:3).
Thus she mapped the first levels of gehennom with her spell and
teleported to the stairs.
She ignored Baalzebub and Asmodeus (two kind minotaurs equipped
her with new wands), killed Juiblex, visited Vlad, ignored Orcus
walked (lack of ?oT) along wizards tower.

Wimp found at Dlvl 48 the bottom. She followed the twisted passages
and finally felt a strange vibration under her feet.

Now she visited wizards tower, since she lacked a c!oGL or
stealth she had to fight the large zoo.
She hoped to find some useful spellbooks, but no. Thus she polypiled
spellbooks a while but no luck. Here she wished for b+FoD, b+MMissle
and seven candles.

Since she relied on frost/quaterstaff most of the time she was
only basic at attack spells (100% fail FoD). Who cares, Wimp
waked the wizard and zapped him with her /oDth.

She quaffed a !oBooze and disturbed a djinni, in fact it was
the other way round.
A !oConf in combination with a ?oTele took her to the VS,
ritual, bless the book, enter the sanctum. Two master - and
one arch lich popped up, but the book brought silence.

With turn 6098 Wimp layed her hands on the Amulet of Yendor.
Despite chaotic her way up was cruel, she was thrown back
17 times. And the wizard equipped with a /oDig stole the
Amulet (5 extra levels including asmo and baalz, thank you
very much.).

But eventually Wimp reached the End Game.

She owned only one ?oGD, 2c?oBP and 1u?oBP, so she wrested her
last wish for a (MM. She wrote three ?oGD.
Earth and Air were uneventful, but at Fire Wimp realized she
was out of confusion, but she owned 3b!oB, 2!oSpeed and two amethyst,
bingo.

Astrals without stealth and free action was very hard.
Wimp received two close calls (pray, !oFH) when her HP
fell to 7 resp 13, after being paralyzed.

But with /oTele and +oJumping and some Finger she
finally reached Anhurs altar.

The voice of Anhur booms: "Congratulations, mortal!"
"In return for thy service, I grant thee the gift of Immortality!"
You ascend to the status of Demigoddes...

Hmm.. I disagree with your decision on chaotic wizard, imho orb of
fate is vastly better than skeleton key, and it also opens the door
for other useful artifacts (eyes of the overworld or pyec are both
excellent choices). Overall I think a neutral wizard is better..
Orb+Quest = instant transport anyplace..

Until it's time to climb back up of course.. and perhaps that factored
into your decision, and if so then nevermind my commentary. I've
always favored chaotic myself until recently and I haven't finished a
neutral ascension yet, so I can't say for sure how bad the situation
is.

Overall, a very cool ascension, mine generally take more like
100.000-200,000 turns, I don't think I'm ready to try something fast
yet.
