The game started fairly basic and i let my pet deal with some of the
early critters, but i killed any undead i could find to get my
alignment up. I needed to be sure that if i prayed for food while
weak that i was not ignored.
My first break was an altar on lvl 5. I don't remember if it was N or
not, but i converted it if it wasn't. I saced until i got a feeling
of reconciliation and went back to the lvl 3 potion shop to clear it
out.
I took my time clearing out lvls 1-5. When i got hunger i would head
back to lvl 5 while my pet dog Bruce stayed on lvl 4 so he wouldn't
eat corpses. Then i would sac until i saw that it was safe to pray
and continued. I Have no idea how long i could have kept this up
without making a mistake.
When i first went down into lvl 6, i saw that it was the oracle. Good,
i don't have to range far from the altar while doing soko.
lvl 7 however, changed my game. I found a sink and kicked it, ready to
take on whatever may come. The dishwasher was gotten rid of by saying
"No, you may not take off my robes." Then, while i was kicking the
sink pretending it was his face, a ring popped up. I dropped it back
in but the sink regurgitated it. Hello SD.
At this point i decided to officially try 10/12, even though in
tournament conditions i can't count on something like this happening.
illiterate and foodless, this was going to be interesting.
Soko gave me reflection and my pets(Bruce, Chuck, and Brandon) got to
live because i was able to kill of the Giant mimics without them. I
did let them eat the corpses.
I also found what turned out to be a wand of undead turning.
I couldn't figure out what my the rest of the rings where from sokobon
and didn't find out until much later. I tried to wear the uncursed
ones but nothing happened. I tried to see if any of them where tele
control(by stepping into a tele trap), regeneration,(by kicking the
wall) or prot against shape changers(by putting them on next to
mimics) but it was a no go.
The next stop was minetown. I put on some armor early on but once i
found the SD ring and found some cool accessories i dumped the banded
mail. I wanted to hit things without using the kick command and i
wanted to use my healing spell that i started out with. By the time i
made it into minetown, i had to drag myself back to the altar at lvl
5 to sac once i refreshed my hunger. I then went to the sink on lvl 7
and killed a black pudding and transported it to the altar lvl. I
used a key to split it. I used the puddings to get rid of the time
out. (since i wasn't crowned it only took one pudding to go me a
green light to praying.)
I didn't find a bag of holding in the mines but i did find a sack
(thank god.)Other tools i found was a magic whistle and can of
grease. I thought i would find another one in hell so i not only
greased my helmet and robes, but anything else i wanted to keep from
damage. In this way i ran out of grease and never found a
replacement.
I didn't have MR so i went very slowly in poly country. I also id'ed
Scare monster earlier and found my first spare one lying around on
the floor. On dlvl 8 i found a poly trap and upgraded my pets. I
don't remember what they were except for Chuck. Chuck turned into a
Mastodon. I retrieved both a luck stone and a touchstone. After i got
my luck maxed by using a wand of create monster i scummed all the
fountains for the b!oGA affect.
The rest of the early game was clearing everything until the castle.
Mine town had a general store and since i needed it for the price id
practice i let that shopkeeper live. Everybody else became Pachyderm
paste.
On dvl 17 there was another temple but i ignored it for now. I
searched high and low for fort Knox but was unable to find it. I also
was spending way more time that i wanted trying on all non cursed
armor. My first good find was some low boots at +5, but i never found
a helmet better than +3 or any cloak at better than +3. The best
enchanted gloves of the whole game was my starting out ones at +2, so
i wore GoP instead. I really hated sorting through all that junk. So
much so that if i found anything at +4 or +5 i stopped testing for
that type of armor (unless i found something magical.)
When i reached Medusa i crossed it with a combination of jumping boots
and wand of cold. When i reached the castle i got jumped by an master
lich that immediately summoned some critters. I ran back up the
squares and left chuck behind. Without MR i should have left it at
that but with out even thinking about it i went back down , whistled
him over and went back up. Stupid, but i really needed chuck for the
quest. However, the smart thing to do was to leave him there and play
with the poly trap until i got a new mastodon. Stupid.
It was about this time that i had a pick axe accident and blew
weaponless. Figures, i often seem to do that. The game became 9/12.
At this stage, i still didn't want to go against Master whomp. I had
about 140 hp and an AC of -7 or so. I also didn't have MR. I decided
to see what the priest would yield. I collect all my gold and got to
about 3 naked ac after minetown. Let chuck stomp on the priest and
went to the next temple. Repeat. I did find a magic cloak but when i
tested it by zapping a wand of MM against the wall in a corridor i
found out it was invisibility.
Well, there was nothing for it but to go against Master I'm going to
beat you senseless and break every bone in your body Kaen. So i
went. had to do some dancing first and let me tell you it stinks with
a chr of 10, int 10. Somehow I got the magic level and went to the
quest.
I changed my outfit at this point and decided i need more armor, so i
put on some dwaven mail +2 and my ac was about -24. Chuck and I went
to pay our respects to the temple of pain. When i entered the lvl, my
warning kicked in and i saw the 5 just hanging about doing nothing.
Two steps from the stairs i found a scroll of scare monster lying on
the floor so i used that as home base. As soon as i stepped on it
something summoned insects around me and then the Master came to
start his lesson. He then paralyzed me. Great. Thats when Chuck
stepped in and sat on the poor monk. Somehow that didn't stop him
from using me as a punching bag and although he took me down to 40 hp
Chuck finished him off first. See, i told you i needed that Mastodon.
Finally, MR. I also used the Eye to see what all the amulets and rings
were. Mostly crap, but i did find out that the only 300 $ ring was
polymorph and that one of the 200$ ones was free action.
At this point my main base of operations would be closed to the border
of hell so i move and consolidated all my stashes to dlvl 22. (the
castle was on 25) I did some alchemy and went into the 200's for HP.
Maybe i did this before the quest.
That pesky master lich was no match for chuck, and the castle was
cleared in no time. I got tired of not hitting critters so i ditched
my armor again. I found and labeled the castle wand as wishing and
put it back in the box it came from just in case some other poor sap
needed it.
I cleared the valley and finally found a BoH. The priest took me down
to -1 naked ac and i let chuck take care of him. No Cloak of MR.
Chuck bit the big one in hell and i had to go slow at first. I was
wearing an AoR, a =oFA and a =oSD so hunger came after exploring
about 2 or 3 lvls. Then i would race back up to level 20, wait till i
was weak, pray, kill and sac a pudding and go back down into hell.
I did this until i found Vlad's on dlvl 37. Then i used that as a
base of operation. I noted all lvl port traps as a precaution.
By the time i found the vibrating stairs, i made lvl 17 and acquired
teleport control. I explored everything and i still was missing a few
things for my final run. No crystal ball, can of grease, Spare MR to
back up the eye, or ring of polycontrol. I also only had about 3
wands of teleport and the wand of death had no charges. I didn't
have as much water as i wanted and i really wanted to find a shield
of reflection to decrease my hunger consumption rate for the planes.
So i went back and scoured the dungeon for any armor i might have
missed. It was much easier with the BoH. I didn't bother to pet test
it and just stuffed it in the bag until i came across an altar. They
were interspaced fairly regularly across the DoD and it took some of
the tedium out of searching. This is when i found a +5 orcish shield.
The next step was to play with the polytrap until i got a gray dragon.
I made friends by tossing my food at the domestics and by playing
with magic traps. I finally got my dragon and only had to twice for
it to yield dragon scales. I didn't get anything else from my wish
list.
Well, ready or not (and i wasn't ready) it was time for the final run.
I did some alchemy and ended up with 400 + hp. Then i made water with
everything else except for the 5 !oS, 9 !oFJ and 3 ! of GE. The 5
were for the astral plane, the 9 were as back up food and the 3 were
just in case i found some more healing and extra healing. I only had
about 9 !oHW after blessing everything i think needed it. The low
number scared me.
Because i woke Rodney with armor, i couldn't hit him very well, He
soon double troubled and took everything from me. (cand, bell, eyes.)
He then decided it would be fun to go to the stairs and climb them,
so i had to go out and find them. I couldn't kill either of them even
with conflict on, and it soon became apparent that i would need a
rubber chicken. Since they kept going away from me the fighting
wasn't dangerous anymore, and i waited until a trice corpse appeared.
It wasn't any easier hitting them with the chicken as trying
barehanded so i had to chase them down through the dungeon maze. I
would get about 1 or two shots and then they would run off. I would
then unwield the chicken and follow them. This went on for about 20
or 30 turns before i was able to stone them. I then zapped a wand of
striking and got my loot back.
When i hit the VS i double checked that the important stuff wasn't
cursed. Then I dipped the book into a !oHW since i didn't know the
BUC status of that one. The sanctum was cake compared to Rodney and i
was soon a proud owner of an Amulet of Yendor. I named it coke.
As i was going up (using wands of teleport and C!ofGL) i became
hungry. I was scared i wouldn't make it to Vlad's but if worse came
to worse i would drop the amulet and climb up by myself. I didn't
need to do that. I went in, took of my ring of SD after invoking the
eye to see if it was safe to pray and waited until weak. Prayed and
went back to the journey.
I made it out of hell and around my stash level Rodney paid me another
visit. He didn't double trouble this time but he did summon a master
mind flayer. I forgot to say that i ran into one of these after the
castle and it sucked the memory of important items that for an illit
is hard to get back. I recovered but it took some time and this was
when i still had potions and wands lying around somewhere to
re-identify. At this point of the game, this would not be so easy to
recover from so i was deathly afraid. I ran down the stairs.
For preparation i took out my ?oSM and put on a ring of conflict. I
came back up and ran from the bunch. I waited again until a rubber
chicken appeared. I stoned Rodney and i think something took the
mindflayer out. I still had a pet Olag-hai but it was at this point
that i think i lost it.
Got to the stash and took all my potions and some wands. Then i ran
for the end game. On dlv 6 i found another trice so i killed and
blessed it for Rodney on earth. I then wasted all my teleport charges
to get the the stairs. (this was a stupid move that i regretted
later.)
Earth Rodney was easy with the rubber chicken already in my hands and
i used light and a wand of secret door detection to find the portal.
Fire was also not bad but an Archon did spawn. lucky for me, it was
on the other side of the level and the portal was on my side.
Air was a pain since i had to go through the clouds to get to the
portal but i made it. conflict was on the whole time on air and
water. (why take a chance) Once i got to water, I took off my AoR
and replaced it with the ahoy. I was nervous doing it but i didn't
want to stay on water forever. I wandered awhile before i stumbled
into the portal.
I really messed up my trip on Astral . I soon as is stepped through
the portal a hostile angel and Arch lich jumped me. I had the
presence of mind to take out my ?of Scare monster some holy water
since that bastard unblessed it. I dropped the scroll and blessed the
bag again. I then killed these two but who should show up from up the
middle but famine. (the one i fear most with foodless.)
The combat must have rattled me because i didn't stop to think at this
point. What i should have done was taken out about 3 wands of create
living shields and broken one of them. After all, Famine was about 3
squares away from me and i had at least that much time. After all, i
was standing on a ?oSM. But no, i picked up my scroll and booked it.
I then reach into my bag and pull out the 5 potions of speed and
became burdened. I drank one and was back to normal. Took two more
steps and drank another one.
Famine was now about 4 steps away from me. I took out my wands at this
point and zapped it . 3 steps. At this rate i won't have my living
shield . I broke a wand. Sure enough, one of the monsters was a mind
flayer, but i just dropped my scroll. That choice was a no brainier.
Well, i now had some breathing room so finished drinking my potions.
Then i pulled out some more wands when i noticed who famine herded me
into. Pesty. Ah, no biggy,I'll just take him down and run to the
altar. Remember, i was only at -20 AC with a -20 pen to hit. Pesty
was my nightmare come true.
I spent all my time trying to hit pesty (with no success) and using
the unihorn almost every round. I was staring to think i had a
problem ( but i didn't stop to think things through). Then i noticed
that pesty also does real damage. I only had 120 hp left. Instead of
trying to hit him with kicks or punches i was looking into my bag for
useful things to help me. I pulled out all my healing potions and any
offensive wand i could find. This wasn't much better since most of
the time the beam missed him. When he took me down to 17 hp i decided
i needed to pray for HP. I needed this prayer for food but that
wouldn't help me if i was dead.
Prayed and then finally stopped to think. The only chance i had was to
use conflict. I could already see a mob of priests and Angels on the
other side of pesty so i put back on my ring of conflict. I became
hungry at this point. On the plus side, pesty never hit me again and
it was An Angel that brought him down. I then ran into the right
compound.
I wasn't paying attention again and before i knew it i saw pesty again
while in the corridor into the temple courtyard. There was just one
ant in between him and me so i took off my ring of conflict. Of
course, that meant that the Angels stopped wailing at each other and
decide it was a better target. They sent beams my way but my luck
held out and they all bounced back. I killed what was in front of me
and ran into the temple. I shut the door and locked it. Whew.
I figured that i wasn't going to live through anymore trips to the
other temples if i played the same way i was doing then, so i took
the time to think about how to make my trip a more pleasant one. But
first, i had to get rid of this weak status. After having pesty
killed the first time i switch my amulet of reflection with a Shield
of Reflection to help me with hunger, but this meant that my ac was
-16 instead of -20. Well, i wasn't doing any fighting in here.
I invoked the eye and found i could not pray. I wasn't too worried
because i still had an AoLS and 9 !oFJ. I drank about 4 or 5 and got
my status out of weak and out of hunger. I was then going to scan the
place with an AoESP and a towel but decide to first check which
temple I was in. It was Neutral.

Does killing undead raise alignment more than killing other creatures?
I didn't realize that.

Monks start with an alignment of 10, which means you should be fine for
food prayers (as long as your prayer timeout has been reached, of
course). That was a problem I ran into when trying pacifist foodless
wizards. They start with an alignment of 0, so food prayers when weak
don't always work.

Your approach seems like a good one for obtaining 10/12 conducts
(barring pick axe accidents). I'm currently working on a 9/12 conduct
game (different set of conducts). YAAP or YASD coming as soon as I
finish the game (or the RNG finishes me).
