After playing Nethack on and off over 5 years i finally ascended a
character, Missy the Dwarven Valk. This character was played over the
course of a month so i don't remember a lot of the early details. Heres a
bit of a summary of the main points. I play Allegrohack coz i like the
tiles.

Quest was fairly easy by the time i got there coz i was about level 20.

Polypiled a little bit. Got some good items but nothing that i hadn't found
already. Had Water Walking boots for a bit but lost them, can't remember
how. Got shield of reflection from statue on Medusa level. Towards the end
i had backup Guantlets of Power, Slippery Cloaks, Shield of Reflection.
Found 4 Magic Markers which i used to write Enchant Weapon and Armor
scrolls, also Gold Detection scrolls.

Used first wish for Amulet of Life Saving, also wished for; Gauntlets of
Power, Helm of Brilliance, blessed Archon figurine (which just ended up
being peaceful, arrgghhh), then wished for Magic Harp to try tame my
peaceful archon and it worked, later wished for cockatrice corpse to help
win a fight. Found Speed Boots late in the game. Ended up finding about 5
bags of holding and an oilskin sack. Also found 2 more Amulets of Life
Saving, saw quite a few go to waste on baddies i killed though.

Missy was pretty much able to stand up to anything in the late game. Hated
running into Master Mind Flayers though, had my brain eaten on about 3
separate occasions. Ended up killing quite a few Master Mind Flayers but
only saw a few Mind Flayers. Arch-Lichs were a pain too coz they kept
summoning stuff. Paid one of the named demons off, killed the others that i
came across.

Wanted to get a couple of good pets to planes with me. Had my pet Archon
and a pet Arch-Lich. Left Archon on a different level for a bit too long
and she became peaceful, grrr, used bullwhip to get artifact weapon off her
which made her angry so i had to kill her. Lost my Arch-Lich pet when i
accidentally hit him while confused, he became peaceful.

Once i got the Amulet i headed back up, got sent back about 4 times, was a
bit annoying but not as bad as what others have suffered. It was during
this trip up that i bumped into the much feared Demogorgon. At first he was
just standing there so i thought i might just try sneak off but he came
looking for me. Was going to try and beat him to death while drinking
potions to cure the sickness. After a few rounds of combat i was getting
pretty nervous, wasn't sure if i was making any headway, and then i
remembered i still had a few wishes left. Wished for a cockatrice corpse
and the next time he showed up beside me i turned him into a statue. Phew,
what a relief.

Ended up with Trollbane, Demonsbane, Dragonbane, Werebane, Snickersnee,
Sunsword, Magicbane, Mjollnir, and a +6 Silver Saber. Got Magicbane from
bones pile, weilded it a lot to stop stuff from getting cursed. Wanted to
have them all on me when i ascended but i left most of them in a bag of
holding on the Astral Plane so i wouldn't be burdened. Had a heap of gems i
wanted to bring along as well but left them before entering the planes coz
they weighed me down too much.

Planes went fine, managed to tame a few dragons and other creatures. Didn't
end up getting any of them to Astral Plane though. Air Elementals got me
down to about 150hp but had enough potions on me to get health back up.

Used wands of Teleport and Death to clear the way to the middle altar which
luckily enough was the correct one. Was stressing the whole way. Famine
managed to hit me a few times which made me more nervous since i only had
one food ration on me. Pestilence made me Ill once but i fixed that with a
prayer. Had forgotten to get potions of full healing and extra healing out
of Bag of Holding before leaving it. Killed Famine and Pestilence with
wands of death. Managed to cast Charm Monster a few times, after taking off
Gauntlets of Power and Shield of Reflection to get success rate down to 48%.
The tamed creaturess helped keep Famine and Pestilence (and other baddies) a
few spaces away from me. Death didn't seem to come after me.

Stood on the Altar and then started to think maybe i could try get back to
the BoH that i dumped upon entering the Astral Plane. Wanted to ascend with
my artifact weapons. Took a step, Pestilence rises from the dead, uh oh,
head back to altar, step onto altar and become paralysed by a thrown potion
of paralysis, Pestilence makes me Ill. At this point i wanted to take a
step back from myself and give myself a giant kick in the ass for not
offering the Amulet when i had the chance. It was like torture pressing the
spacebar to get through all the messages waiting to see if i could move
again before dieing of Illness. I had stayed up to 3:30am to finish the
game, had a chance to end it, and then here it looked like i was going to
die while standing on the altar with the amulet. Fortuneately i was able to
move before dieing. And then for a second i considered trying to kill
Pestilence one more time, after what had just happened you would think i had
learned :) Came to my senses and decided to just offer the Amulet and i
ascended.

Before this character i had only gotten as far as the quest so from the
quest till the end i was seeing everything for the first time. Now i know
what to expect i hope to make my next ascension in quite a few less moves.

I've never had luck with blessed figurines myself. I usually get tame
critters, but then they somehow find a levelporter and disappear for
ever (or until they've turned un-tame).

Didn't genocide liches and mindflayers? Genoless for a first ascension

is very courageous.

Tackling Demogorgon successfully in a first ascension is very good.
I'm impressed.

You did what? Reached the altar, then turned back? Good god.

>head back to altar, step onto altar and become paralysed by a thrown potion

Free action is almost mandatory on the Astral Plane. The priests can
cast paralyzation ('hold') spells and if a Rider is nearby, you've had
it.

How many turns did you lose? Pestilence can kill very quickly. I think
my tourist died in just 3 or 4 turns when he ran foul of Pestilence
with a cursed unicorn horn.

You were using Mojo on the Astral Plane? From what I've heard, it's
not a very good weapon there.

Overenchanted. I'm surprised it didn't vaporize. Or did you poly
this from some elven armor? Or can shirts be safely enchanted over
+5, I wonder?

>Rings
>a - an uncursed ring of slow digestion (on left hand)

You don't need teleport control on the Planes - they're all no
teleport levels. A ring of free action would have been far more
useful.

[snip]

>You were sick from illness.

I generally see this after I die... :)

Very impressive indeed.

Or he had two at +5, and spare scrolls, so there was nothing to be lost
by trying to enchant one of them further, and he got lucky...

No, there's no cure. And I wouldn't want one anyway.

Which doesn't really change Jules' point, since it's still very
dangerous. :)

Yes; the chance of vaporising a +4 shirt is 75%, a +5 one 80%. Either
way, not odds I'd like to take without insurance.

Oops. I confused that with weapons and was convinced to be save
at +4, at least for that deluded moment to make the post...
