Can anyone help me out. I`m trying to work out what needs to be edited
in the save file to increase the hitpoints of a character in NH3.2.1
for MSDOS.
I`ve looked through it, but decided asking would probably garner
better results:-) Yes, I know it`s cheating, and I make no claims as
to doing otherwise:-)
Thanks in advance

It would probably be easier to increase your hitpoint by spending the next
few weeks honing your skill at Nethack -- since the savefile is
checksum-protected, you'll either have to hack the executable itself or
spend a lot of time trying to figure out the new checksum to get any sort
of savefile hacking to work.

To raise your HP, you will need either a wand or a potion of extra
healing.
1. arrange your inventory so that it has letters a b c d e f g h in it
somewhere.
2. name the first item ( this helps you locate the data in a save file)
3. Save
4. copy your save file
5. open it with debug (or whatever)
6 scroll down until you find the name of item a
7. the letters b c d e etc should follow
if you had ONE potion of extra healing, look for a one about 6 byte
before its letter in your inventory. change it to about 20h. save. give
it a try. quaff your 32 PoXH for more HP.
8. IF you have a wand, a number between 42 and 58 hex will be 1 or 2?
bytes in front of its inventory letter. change the number to 4B to make
a WoW. If you know the # of charges, it will be nearby. Change it to 7F
to get (127) charges. Save, start for nethack and wish for all you
want. Just forget about prayer though.
Lots more can be done to save files. I have never adjusted HP or
abilities in the NH save file. (I hack the source for that) Having seen
the source, I know that NH can be compiled to produce different save
files, so all I have said might be for nothing on your version.
IT WORKS ON 3.2.1
I tested it a few minutes ago.

If you're going to cheat the game this way, I don't think that you'll post an
ascension. And if you're not going to try a real ascension anyways, why don't
you use the wizard (debug) mode and just ^Wish for 127 potions of extra
healing?

Since I was the original person who asked this question, i`d just like
to say that compressed or not, or whatever magic they weave on it,
editing the save the way Marcus said works fine. It was deeply amusing
as well:-) 555 hit points, and I STILL got killed. (SIGH!)

At last, you can't REALLY cheat NetHack :)
For my "real" ascensions, I use nothing more powerful than backups of
saves. I am very much impressed by people who ascend with less. I also
question their sanity.
Lately, I've been looking for ways to make the game less aggravating,
but no easier.
Wizard mode has been helpful in determining other things. A little
while ago I found that the cornuthaum does NOT provide the magical
cancellation the code says it should.
Ah. That sort of real.

In my experience, computers always doing exactly what the code says
they should. What evidence have you got to the contrary?

I backup my saves, but I usually only use them if the game crashes. I've
done 4 ascensions in the past two weeks, and only in one of them did I
"abuse" the backup of saves (I used it to ascend a priest after a YASD). I
don't know about sanity, it is just mostly a mixture of skill and luck.

All I can say is practice, practice, practice. My first real ascension came
after a year of playing NetHack, and just now I've reached the point where I
can ascended a Valk probably 10% of the time.

No, you`re right, I won`t. For one thing I couldn`t be bothered to
type it all out.

Because that`s way to simple. If you`re in Wizard mode, you can just
wish for all you want. I just hacked a wand to a WoW and wished for 3
things.

That 3.2.0 bug was fixed in 3.2.1, so is ancient history
by now....

I still found it deeply amusing:-)
There is nothing more powerful than savefile backups.

The reason for this is that a) we are all insane, and b) if you backup
savefiles you never learn from your deaths in the way that a proper player
does, so in a very real sense the game is less difficult for us.
