To those keeping track i found the Amulet on a corpse and playing all night
I gotback to the top of the dungeon.
Plane of Earth was easy but i can't seem to make any headway on Plane of
Air.
My amulet of life saving has been used up already and seem to be running
round on the right side trying to find the portal.
So saved...
I looked ta the spoilers and I haven't got any gold detection scrolls ;(
What can i do

It's pretty respectable *not* to spoil yourself silly before
the Ascension run.
An item can be on top of the portal.
Watch for monsters disappearing. (A summoning storm might help
there. ;^)
Got a magic marker and blank or blankable scrolls?
How about a crystal ball?
I don't think I know what class you're playing, but two classes
have crystal balls as their Quest Artifact.
How about wishes?
Smoky potion and a way to bless it?
Wand of wishing?
Magic lamp and a way to bless it?
Keep an eye out in case any of those are generate randomly
while you're on the Astral Planes.
If you want to do the work, try this:
1. Take a sheet of paper and mark off 24x80 grid.
(Actually, a text file would work better.)
2. Mark off each square with a monster in it or that
you've been to.
3. Move your character. (To an unmarked square if possible.
:-)
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all squares on right-hand
side of screen have been marked.
5. Bang head against wall.
You've still got two more planes before the Astral Plane
after you finish the Plane of Air.

Stick a piece of clear plastic wrap to the screen use a marker
to indicate where you and monsters have been.

The Bell of Opening, if non-cursed, acts among other things as a
detect unseen effect. You'll probably need to recharge it to be
effective, though (assuming you haven't already dumped it).

I wouldn't do that with a modern screen (such as my laptop has) and I'm
glad to be rid of the old-fashioned glass tube that gave me a headache.

wrap to the screen"? Or did I miss something important?
And I agree about CRT monitors. Nethack looks so much clearer
and sharper, with richer colors, on my laptop. I always think
there's something wrong with my CRT then when I switch back to
it.

The fact that my laptop screen essentially *is* plastic wrap, with some
gel-like substance behind it, and I wouldn't like (a) to stick anything
at all to it or (b) apply local force to it with something as pointed as
a marker, even a wide marker.

And thanks to Brian P. for mentioning the 's' search command
for finding portals (in his YAAP). (How could we all have
forgotten that? ;^)

Hmm I am a Valk so have the Quest Item...
Had a wand of secret door but dumped it as finding them was previously
easy ;(

Not sure about spells...have quite a few but have 100% fail with GoP and
Shield of reflection but
possible
Oh and I dumped (the empty) Bell of Opening....have a charge scroll but
saving it for wand of death...

As for all traps except spider webs, ^. (More importantly, ^ is what a
crystal ball recognises as a request to search for traps.)

Of couse, once I posted I spent a minute going through the help and
finding what I needed
and found the symbol
I also reread some spoilers and using steam vortexes to regain HP and
using the Orb allowed me to get
to the portal...now in fire but looks a bit more manageable....
Saved so I am bright for next session and so i can reread some spoilers
before making the attempt..
Will need to recharge my Orb...is that possible...one charge left as a
two times didn't work

Can be recharged. Needs an obvious item, blessed if possible.
Keep the alternative ideas in mind, just in case. Particularly
's' (or a ring of searching. Bet you didn't think that could be
useful on the Astral Planes. ;^)
