Someone on IRC suggested the master key of theivery. It sounds very
useful, I think this would be a good next wish.
Bag of holding: maybe not strictly necessary, but nice to have, and
pretty rare, I think. This seems worth burning a wish for, I think.
After that it becomes a little less clear.
-Amulet of life saving
Only downside is I need a new source of reflection. Longbow of Diana
grants it, but I wont get that for a little while, so maybe I need
-Shield of Reflection
My current large round shield isn't so great. But is it worth wishing
for a 3rd source of reflection when both my amulet and quest artifact
grant it?
-gauntlets of power
don't have any gloves, so these seem like a good choice.
Should I wish for a better helmet?
There's also the question of weapon. My current plan is to go #offer
enough to get Stormbringer. Between that and the Longbow, I think I
should be ok, although it might be worth it to wish for a stack of
silver daggers or silver arrows for vampires. Does anyone know how
many arrows it's best to wish for? I don't think I can wish for
Magicbane, right?
Other things I've heard are good to wish for:
-magic marker
-scrolls of genocide
-blessed tinning kit
-wand of polymorph
-ring of levitation
-archon figurine
Also, how many wishes should I keep in reserve for emergencies?
thanks in advance for your help,
Tom
Two arrows or daggers so that isn't worthwhile.
Magicbane will zap you about every other time that you wield it and
you just wished for MR already.
Magicbane may still be a good choice, if you wish to restrict your
weapon skills to Dagger and Bow and it does not zap you when you
simply use it to write.
The MKoT is very useful, but don't bother invoking it much.
Try the mines first before wishing for a bag if you can since you are
likely to find one there.

With the set of equipment you have now, I'd wish for a BoH and hang on
to the rest. You can obtain naked AC1 from your god with a little bit
of work, and most of the items you've listed for potential wishes are
things that are either a) not super-important yet or b) stuff you'll
find on the way to the Castle.

A lot depends on how big a hurry you are in. If you are willing to
#offer until crowned I'll assume that you're not inclined to waste
resources just to save time.

Definitely nice to have. Think back though and consider how many
artifacts you've seen in the game so far. If you've seen 2 or more
consider the risk associated with not getting an artifact wish. Once
you have the MKoT in your possession you can start eating leprechaun
corpses and give yourself an escape key (^T) on any level where
teleport is allowed. Very nice indeed!

I often wish for a bag of holding, but maybe hold off a bit if you
already have a bag and make the wish after you start to become
burdened. Also I'd second HJC's advice to at least check the mines
first.

I'd stick with the amulet of reflection but then again, just because
you're paranoid doesn't mean the RNG isn't trying to kill you.

No, IMO, stay with the amulet of reflection; you'll need it when
soldiers start showing up. Keep in mind that once you wake Rodney he
can steal your Quest artifact so be sure to have a backup source of
reflection for the ascension run.
> -gauntlets of power
> don't have any gloves, so these seem like a good choice.
You're human (I think since you have a +2 cloak of displacement) so
you can eat giant corpses until 18/** so there is no advantage to
gauntlets of power over the long term. You should also start finding
leather gloves on human corpses soon enough (Minetown even) so I
wouldn't waste the wish unless you are in a big hurry to get the
amulet and get out. In any case, you'd be better off with gauntlets
of dexterity.

No.

These are nice for writing magic mapping scrolls.

It might be nice to eliminate L before getting to the castle

My preference is to keep at least 2 non-wrest wishes for the Astral
plane: a cockatric corpse, a helm of opposite alignment.
The wishing spoiler says 20 for missile weapons. Which I guess arrows
are but daggers aren't.
Phil
I'd rather anything MC3, even elven/oilskin, but some people like
displacement and I wouldn't spend a wish here (given that you have MR
already).
> +0 hard hat
Fine to ascend in (or switch to elven for casting).
> +0 large round shield
> +1 pair of speed boots
I prefer jumping but both are nice; not worth a wish now to change.
Jumping also obviate the need for levitation until Juiblex.

I would definitely spend enough now to ensure that you live; there's
no reason to be conservative since you have the Castle wand ahead if
you don't find a lot of resources.
MKoT is very nice, telecontrol alone sometimes warrants a wish and 1/2
phys damage + not using a ring slot makes it even better.
> Bag of holding: maybe not strictly necessary, but nice to have, and

Ehh. But you're underwater in wishes, so maybe.

Get it if you aren't experienced enough to be sure you don't need it.
> -Shield of Reflection

Quest artifact only when wielded. I'd hold off until Medusa (in case
the shield is there) but that limits the "oLS to post-Medusa so it
could be worth gettig now.
> -gauntlets of power
> don't have any gloves, so these seem like a good choice.
They're the worst gloves in the game; if you wish for gloves, make it
Dex. But leather will abound soon and dex are only slightly better
(negligible in the mid-late game). I wouldn't bother wishing for
gloves, personally.
> Should I wish for a better helmet?
Not yet, that's a luxury at the castle (after checking the store room)
if you have plenty of bonus wishes.

Stormy + Longbow is fine, or even just the longbow. Other than when
levitating, you won't need melee much. Arrows/daggers are limited
just like everything else (3 gives you the maximum expected value of
getting 1.8 in return).
> Other things I've heard are good to wish for:
> -magic marker
These are very valuable.
If you want "oLS (pretty valuable), go with MKoT, "oLS, ]oReflection.
If not, go with MKoT, BoH.
In either case, the remaining 2-3 (or 1-2 in the first case) wishes
I'd spend on magic markers.
> -scrolls of genocide
> -blessed tinning kit
> -wand of polymorph
> -ring of levitation
> -archon figurine
Ehh. =Lev if you don't have a better source by the Castle (though
maybe even then save the wish until you're about to enter the planes).
> Also, how many wishes should I keep in reserve for emergencies?
I think right now having good gear on you is more important than
emergency wishes.
You'll get at least 5 more wishes from the castle wand, so I would use
these to make sure you get there.
You have Magic Resistance and Reflection, so you're fine there (though
I would hae wished for SDSM + CoMR).
The first thing you need is protection. Obviously, the Master Key is
one way to help this (just make sure you have enough hitpoints).
Another option is getting a magic marker and enchanting all the armor
you plan to keep for your ascention run (the boots, for example. The
GDSM as well, unless you're planning on changing at some point).
Regardless of wishes, have you gotten divine protection yet?
Someone else pointed out that you can find lots of goodies on the
castle/Votd levels and that maybe you should hold off your wishing
until then. Normally this is not a bad idea, but you have more than
enough wishes to get everything, so why not make sure?
Helmet - I would wish for a Helm of Telepathy. The better to see your
enemies from far off (so you can pelt them with arrows).
Gloves - You're an Orc, so you never get over 18\50 strength. Getting
Gauntlets of Power (don't forget "blessed fixed") would be useful.
Finally, the Cloak of Displacement is nice, but only MC 2. I would
consider getting MC 3 soon (though Stormbringer does give you drain
resistance).
Other useful ideas:
- Magicbane is nice, but has the potential to zap you every time you
wield it. I would with for a blessed fixed +2 athame, so you can
write the 'E' word any time you want. It will save you when
surrounded. If you genocide 'L', then you don't have to worry too
much from curses.
- A figurine of an archon can be fun (make sure you have a magic
whistle), but I wouldn't bother. At this point you should be powerful
enough to do everything yourself. You're even chaotic, so you can
kill all the town guards and shopkeepers without serious sideffects
(and EAT them!).
Other things you might want later on (but I would hold off on wishing
just yet):
- Ring of conflict. (For crowd control)
- Ring of slow digestion. (but by this point you should have any
problem with food anyway).
- Ring of levitation. (Or just wait and see if you get it by the time
you hit the castle).
Finally, just a general piece of advice. Go to the mines, get
protection, power up (AC to -20 at least, good weapon), and get
yourself a luckstone. Then go directly to the castle. One thing I've
learned is that doing the castle early really helps.
Dig down at medusa. Watch out for Minotaurs (keep a wand of teleport
handy for this). Use Elbereth early and often. Find out the tune and
crush your enemies.
Think before you act.
knnn.
The MKoT is an awesome artifact, if fewer than 2 artifacts already
exist that should definitely be your next wish. Remember it will
blast you for at least 20 HP when you receive it - but as a level 9
orc that shouldn't be fatal.
The BoH is an important item, but if you still have enough inventory
slots or a plain sack and you aren't burdened, then it can be delayed
for quite a while. Remember to wish for it blessed and greased.
It is important to remember that if you are saving wishes for later,
you want to be extra-careful not to let your wand get destroyed by an
electrical shock. Therefore, keep the wand in a sack or drop it
before doing anything that might result in a shock - looting a
(possibly trapped) chest, opening a (possibly trapped) door, sitting on
a throne, standing next to water.

...
> -gauntlets of power

If you are planning on using thrown daggers as your primary attack,
blessed fixed +2 gauntlets of power should be right there on your wish
list. You should also be considering using enchanted orcish daggers
for your stack, I think. The extra thrown dagger from your racial
bonus would more than compensate for the lower damage.
> Should I wish for a better helmet?
Hmm. I don't think you need to be thinking about that yet. You
should be trying on all non-cursed helmets that you find, but I don't
think the boost from a helm of telepathy would be worth a wish at this
point.

You could wish for Magicbane, and it would be great for engraving
Elbereth and a decent melee weapon, but it might not be your best
choice for this point in the game.

If you are keeping wand wishes for emergencies, you need to keep at
least two - the (1:1) wish and the wrest wish.
I decided rather than save the wishes, I'd use it all up in trying to
have everything I'd need to get to the castle. I didn't find any bags
of holding in the mines, but I found the luckstone, and a cursed ring
of conflict which I put some holy water on. While wandering through
the mines I ran into a Master Lich! I think it must have come from a
bones file, since I was only level 10. But it was actually
surprisingly easy to dispatch, since I have cold resistance & MKoT.
He didn't even curse my stuff, I don't know why. Does MC2 protect
against curses? Then later I was stuffing stuff into my bag and put
"a wand called teleport or cancel" into my bag of holding. I was
quite upset with myself when it exploded. Just goes to show, rushing
is the easiest way to screw up in nethack. Anyway, I'm headed to the
castle, I'll try not to get killed by exploding drawbridge. Wish me
luck.
Tom
I always call those wands: mi/tele/can *** DON'T PUT IN a BoH ***
After cancellation is identified each wand is named: *** DON'T PUT IN a
BoH ***
All BoHs and BoTs are also named so and so is the (oilskin) sack that
holds the emergency equipment.
And last: I have installed the menucolor patch and defined the following
definition in my defaults.nh:
MENUCOLOR="* DON'T *"=orange
Haven't had an explosion accident since.

Exactly as much as MC3 will, ie, not at all. You were just lucky that he
did not use that attack.
