Finally I succeeded! - I ascended the last role/race combination that was
still outstanding in my record of NAO games; an orcish ranger.

The problem was that I am playing only randomly selected characters, and
it took a really long time to get that combination, and then not spoil the
game. On NAO I had killed four of them already and now the 5th one selected
for me succeeded. And this time, once again, I nearly spoiled the game...!

Ready to get the Book from the Wizard. Accompanied with two marvellous pets,
a blue dragon and an Olog-hai I entered the portal to the lowest Wizard Tower
level, confused myself, and levelported to the upper level of the tower. I
landed on the narrow path between the wall and the moat that protects the
Wizard's inner lair. Carefully burned the E-word to be safe from those nasty
and dangerous hordes of sea creatures. Now time for some final preparations.
Took some remaining cursed items from my bag of holding, a blessed scroll of
remove curse, and... - read the scroll. - A big and severe mistake! - I had
been still confused from the intra-Tower levelport. My shield of reflection
and my wielded Stormbringer (besides some more other items) got cursed. It
was thus impossible to do anything with my hands; neither looting my bag
for any solution, nor engraving another secure word on the ground. My magic
whistle got also cursed, so that I could not reliably call for my pets in
emergencies. And my now cursed luckstone I had to drop as well. Sadly, prayer
is impossible in Gehennom. After my pets and myself had killed all the sea
creatures, dragons, and whatnot, I proceeded to explore the rest of the upper
tower then descended to clear the zoo; descending with both pets my blue
dragon landed in the zoo and got killed there quite immediately. The problem
now was that I could neither levitate nor walk on water to cross the moat on
the lower tower level and to leave the place for salvation. I was doomed it
seemed. But then I detected a magic trap; and a glimmer of hope arose. A
random rare remove curse event from the trap could save me. But instead,
more and more monsters appeared, a baluchiterium, an Olog-hai, many non-E
respecting humanoids, xans, umber hulks, and more. My HPs dropped and
dropped. An appearing master mind flayer got zapped away with one of my
few remaining charges from my wand of teleportation. With help of my pet
Olog-hai the chamber eventually cleared, so I could continue my magic trap
dance. I got charismatic; C'mon! And then the salvific words: "You feel like
someone is helping you." - It's about time, is all I'd say. [T:47877-48531]

Thrilling!

Confusion may be an underestimated risk in the game. You tend not to
notice when it happens (due to an U or whatever) and most things are
still safe to do while confused ... yet some are not.

At least that's how I treat confusion. If I'm not near water or traps,
I often just keep hacking and slashing instead of stopping to cure it.

Indeed. As I read, I wondered how you could ever get out of that mess.

Yes. And some things done confused are even beneficial.

An IMO flaw in Nethack is that if you travel with the '_' command and
an umber hulk confuses you, the game continues with the travel command
execution instead of aborting it. That way it may be disastrous if you
travel on Medusa's level and a newly created random umber hulk appears,
leading you straight into the water without possibility to just stop.
If, OTOH, you do a command repetition '.', waiting for, say, blindness
or confusion to wear off, this will be interrupted. Often in my games
it's just annoying to get your tasks interrupted when an effect wears
off, but getting a negative effect should definitely stop any actual
initiated multi-turn action.
