Carry less stuff. ;-)
It's beyond irritating. It's stupid. (He says, at the risk
of starting a holy war...) To understand precisely why
it's stupid, realize that you can't even drop piles of
junk on a cleared out level (eg, spare armor, cursed eqp
you're waiting to bless, etc.) because levels exist
only while you're on them.
I gave up on Moria precisely because it violates such a
basic aspect of reality, and makes a thoughtful, conservative
strategy virtually impossible.

Obviously a menu system like the main inventory in your pack would
not work, since it appears that one of the points to having a sack
is to store, perhaps not unlimited weight, but unlimited types of
items. In other words, you'd run out of letters, and getting around
THAT (say, with some sort of sub-menu) would quickly cause confusion
in the user.
We could get nasty, and implement a sack realistically, where you
just pull out something at random and HOPE it's what you want... :)
Seriously though, just change the choices you have from "ynaq" to
"ynaqb", where "b" goes back to a previous item. This fixes a lot;
the only thing it doesn't fix is getting to that last item in the
list. For this, you could have the list wrap around going backward,
but not forward, or alternately have it wrap both ways and require
the user to press "q" to stop selecting.

Solution: allow a b?SoI to identify stuff in containers. Another
solution would be to allow it to identify stuff in the space where
you're standing. I would *love* this, since it allows me to ID a
loadstone without picking it up. Sure, I could kick it, but I like
having everything "officially" IDed. :)

It would be nice if it gave you a list of letters like the spell menu
does. Really, it isn't that troublesome unless you're carrying
around loads of junk. What's annoying is killing 50 soldiers on
the same spot and sorting through their stuff for enchanted
armour... :-(

Is it guaranteed to identify all unID'd objects? I seem to recall
that only a few get identified, anyway.

I wonder if perhaps you could 'switch' your inventory to a container
temporarily. Then all the objects in the bag/whatever would be available on
normal inventory slots.
I also think that having a number of available inventories available might be a
possibility. The user could press #-1, #-2, #-3 etc. to swap between them. If
you're currently in inventory-2, you could wield weapon 'a' from inventory-1 by
typing 'w' (wield) '#-1' (inventory-1) 'a' (the weapons) or something like
that.
The other advantage to this method is that anyone who dislikes it can simply
ignore its existance.

Not a guarantee, but it happens often enough that you should cram your
inventory with unID'ed objects when you read one. I frequently use this
tactic to ID all my stuff with only several scrolls of identify (thanks again,

You never see it in your inventory as worn. As soon as you wear it it

I don't agree. You can be wielding a sword and manage to grab a ring with the
sword still in your hand and dip only the ring in a fountain.

AFAIK it already works that way. An uncursed scroll will work for worn/wielded
items, a blessed one will do for everything in your possesion.

Polymorph into an Octopus? 8-) or maybe use your teeth and elbows to do the
trick? I wouldn't try it in the middle of a battle, which makes you think of
more mundane things, like wielding a two-handed sword, zapping a wand, throwing
a shuriken and reading a scroll at almost the same time...
On a slightly related topic, I would say that polymorphing into a critter with
many arms, like a marilith, should make you able to wield more than one weapon,
or at least wear more than one ring! Also, what's the difference in damage when
you wield a dagger and when you wield five daggers?

IIRC, you can just prefix with a number when you say yes, eg:
2 food rations? [ynaq] (and you type 1y to get one). This works
for many dropping, picking up things (anything that uses that std.
dialogue I supose.

Have you ever imagined a world with no hypothetical situations?
Umm, you can do this already. When it asks [yn#aq], the # means
number. Answering 1 will take out (or put in) just one of your 15.
And even though it's annoying to look through a bag with a bunch of
identical items, when you take them out, they merge together as they
move into your inventory slots.

You already can do this.. When it asks you if you want to take out your 15 food
rations, instead of answering 'y', type in the number '5' and press enter.
It'll just take out 5 rations.

Drop them all and pick them up again. This will merge the
identical ones.

It already does all that!
If you take out one item (say "a clear potion") it goes in a particular
slot, and if the next clear potion doesn't join it there it means that
it isn't absolutely identical. One could be holy water, for instance, and
the second ordinary or unholy water. Or you dropped one on an altar which
changed its description to "an uncursed clear potion" which doesn't merge
with a plain "clear potion" either, even if they're both uncursed. That
would make it too easy to identify things.
Incidentally that's why I hardly ever bother to drop darts (or daggers
for that matter) on an altar: if I have "r - 19 darts" and the next lot
goes in slot 'r' as well I'm practically sure that they're all uncursed
+0 darts. The rest I try to sell to shopkeepers and keep them if they
offer more than 1 zorkmid each (meaning they're +1 for every 5$).
Also, if you put things in a bag or take them out in lots, you have the
choice of typing a number instead of 'y', 'n' or 'q' to put <number>
items in the bag. I usually keep 1 or 2 rations on hand and the rest in
my BoH (if I'm lucky enough to have a BoH at all, lately I either get
given one by a water demon very early on or I have to polypile for it).

FOR THE RECORD, ***ALL*** OF THE ABOVE ARE ***ALREADY*** QUITE EASILY DONE!!!
1) *Drop* your multiples (newly made blank scrolls or potions of water, for
example). When you pick them up, they usually merge.
2) a [bag-letter] "take something out" y what kind? % Take out 15 blessed
food rations? 1 "You have some difficulty taking out a blessed food
ration" a blessed slime mold? q "Would you like to put something in?" y
"What kind of item" % "99 blessed tins of cockatrice meat?" 27 "You put 27
blessed tins of cockatrice meat into the bag of holding. -more- Your

I think the suggested code change is a poor idea. There are no serious inven-
tory problems in NetHack, the code is very generous already. This is similar
to the player who wanted the floating eye resistance intrinsic added. More
often than not, NetHack already has your problem solved, but you must provide
the ingenuity!!!
Ditto to everyone else's roguelike comments. NetHack is a *very* generous
game with inventory. It's just very hard and complicated.
*If* people go off the deep end and want to make the next approved version
have inventory hacks, I suggest, actually, that Angband's inscription system
be used. That is, you #name something (y) one particular item, and if it is
of the form @+something, you can access it by that something.
I hasten to point out that in fact right now you can put stuff in bags
by letter and amount number: a bag-letter q y [amt #][item-letter].
