Hej,

Well, up until now this has been a good game.

I'm playing an Archaeologist. Got lucky with a fountain
wish on the second dungeon level, then got a magic lamp a few levels
later. Wished for GDSM, then speed boots, so the early levels were a
breeze.

Now I have AC -14, Str 18/20, "oR from Sokoban. Really really was hoping
for the bag, but oh well. Wielding +0 dwarvish mattock, and generally
mopping the floor with the creatures. XP 14, finished Quest. All is
well, haven't lost more than 10 hp since duking it out with the
Invisible Minion of Huhetotl.

So here's the problem. I really need some items, but they don't appear
to exist in the dungeon at this point. In particular, very, very few
?oIdentify have showed up at all -- I think I've found 5 (I had 6 ?oTele
before I'd found even 1). No bookstores, no nothing. Also no altar other
than the minetown altar, so blessing things has generally been out. As a
result, I have a massive collection of unidentified scrolls (14 to be
precise!), and no fewer than eight unidentified rings. Have not
identified any nasty scrolls, or genocide, so random readings are right
out. = ) Identified most potions by drinking them or seeing monsters
drink them. I have a few wands, all of which have been identified by
engraving or zapping, but all of them are useless (door detection,
probing, sleep) except for 1 fire and 2 cold. And *something* stole the
treasure chest I stashed stuff in ca lv 14.

What should I do? I can't even find a blindfold or a towel in this
barren dungeon! Also, there's a Demilich on level 22, who I foolishly
tried to sneak by a couple of times. I'm still wearing the cursed +0
ring of protection, as there are no ?oRC around. I killed every
shopkeeper I could find (save one), but no useful items.

This could be my first ascension, but it's starting to look like I'm
screwed. Advice?

Hmm.., have you price-IDed the scrolls at some shopkeeper before you
slaughtered them? (Assuming the one left is Izchak? Who won't tell
you prices for scrolls.)

Duplicate rings could be identified using sinks if any are generated.

You may want to dig down from Medusa an make the Castle first. Have
you a wand of striking and a scroll of earth (from Sokoban) or some
musik instrument or some means of levitation to do so? If you succeed
to do the castle you will have the wishes for everything you like.

You have MR, Speed, Reflection... Why do you think you are not yet ready
for the castle?

Actually, any shopkeeper can tell you the price of (nearly) any item, if you
don't mind having to steal/buy it back from him. Stand outside the door,
and throw the item in to the store. It now counts as part of the
shopkeepers inventory, so he'll tell you how much it goes for. Getting
it back after that is an exercise left to the adventurer.

please could you help me understanding why doing this is a great idea?
I usually call the scroll the price the shopkeeper wants to sell it when
it's his and the price he offers when it's mine (and i don't sell it)
You get that way a quite good way to identify the scroll families.
I think there exists a corresponding table between sell prices
and buy prices but i didn't need it since i prefer identifying
expensive ones with a scroll.

if you think that's pure nonsense and I really waste srolls that way,
tell me so ( I usually use one or two Blessed scrolls of identify
to identify other scrolls)

Because Izchack does not buy items other than candles, lanterns or
lamps, so you can't find out the prices of scrolls by offering them to
him.

You are missing the point here, by cutting out that exact part of the

Jeeves has a large amount of scrolls that Janis thinks might not be
price-ID:d yet. Jeeves also states that he has killed all shopkeepers
except one. Janis deduces that this one shopkeeper probably is Izchak
(see the RGRN FAQ if the reasons for this are unclear to you). Izchak is
(always) the candles and lamps shopkeeper in minetown. A shopkeeper does
not generally give you a price for things that are outside of his
business area. Justin proposes a clever way around this - by throwing
items into the shop, they become belongings of the shop(keeper) and he
will give you a quote for them even though they are not items he would
normally choose to trade in.

Hope that makes it clearer.
