I have a lot of trouble noticing when a monster is coming at me, and I
keep thinking every monster is a 'u'. Argh!

[snip lotsa gibberish]
Your posting showed lots and lots of ú characters (u with acute
accent); if this is what you see, you're probably running IBMgraphics
on something that doesn't support it (some sort of terminal program?).
Try DECgraphics, and if that still shows gibberish, make sure that
both IBMgraphics and DECgraphics are turned off. Use the O command.

So presumably you can't change its IBM/DECgraphics options?

Very annoying. But you just might be able to do something about it. You
are playing this, I presume, through your web browser. This browser has
a setting determining which fonts it uses by default, for monospaced and
proportional text. Change the one for monospaced to another font with
another character encoding; for example, if it is now Courier, and
you're on MS Windows, try terminal instead. This could help; it's not
guaranteed to, though.
