This question pertains to Vanilla Nethack 3.4.3. My character found a
blessed ? of genocide. I hate mind flayers so I want to get rid of
all h's. However, my pet was polymorphed into a darwf load (purple
h). If I read the ? and genocide all h's, will my pet go away?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Bill Doss

Yes.
Polymorph your pet into something different before genociding h.
And watch out that you are not playing a dwarf race yourself!

Yes. Your pet is an 'h', so genociding all 'h' will kill it.

Yes. Monster polymorph is permanent, so your pet now *really* is a h.

If you didn't start out as a dwarf, you cannot polymorph into one, so
for players, this problem does not arise (start as a non-dwarf, and
you'll never genocide yourself if you bless-genocide h).

Not everyone starts a game with a given (human or other) race. I usually
let the CRNG (C:cruel) chose a race for me.

So if you happen (or have chosen) to play a non-human, take care with
genocides (and unintentional cannibalism). The same is possible playing
the human race, of course, but I think most people are quite aware not
to genocide (or eat) members of the human race.

This makes me think of an interesting scenario . . . if you start out
as an h, then polymorph into something else and blessed-genocide all
h, you don't die right away ("You feel dead inside"). If you then don
an Amulet of Unchanging, could you theoretically go on to ascend,
after having genocided your own race? Wizmode suggests this is
possible . . . is there any reason why it's not?

No, and it has been done several times. Here's an example by the
legendarily polymorphed ascender nyra: news:3DDA77D8...@gmx.net -

I never realized that (seeing as how dwarf and gnome are pretty crappy
choices for controlled polymorph). You can turn into a dwarf/gnome
lord/king however. b?oGeno of a race while you are polymorphed into
that race will just revert you to normal, unless you have an amulet of
unchanging on... then you just die.

Sure... why not. There are many stories of people polymorphing,
self-genociding, then ascending. Mostly they do this whilst standing
on the appropriate high altar though. I don't know if you get any
special messages though (I didn't in wizard mode). Quitting after a
self genocide gives you the message Quit while already on Charon's
boat.
