I didn't keep many notes, so this won't be much of a story. I started
with a spellbook of drain life, and found a spellbook of identify
early. There were altars aplenty; I got Magicbane fairly soon after
surviving on the strength of thrown daggers. I hit a LOT of bones
levels, including one of my own and two of somebody named Duane or
something like that, and they rewarded me aplenty. The Orb of Fate,
PYEC, Demonbane, Fire Brand, lots of spellbooks. Most of my final armor
was picked out of bones piles, including the SDSM that I had even
before the Quest that really made the game for me.
I killed the minetown priest, after polymorphing her into a newt -- she
didn't get better -- but Ptah still got angry. But I survived that one
and converted the altar. I guess I should have converted the altar
after polymorphing her but before killing her. There was a coaligned
temple on DL12 I think. The poor priest there was probably carrying
150k zorkmids around by the time he was done, but it only got me down
to a naked AC of 5. The armor got me down to -48 at one point and I
ended with -42.
One of the bones levels got me somebody else's pet archon. I charmed
him and named him Archie. He made the castle a breeze; but a nasty
purple worm swallowed him on the VS level.
I wielded a +6 Magicbane almost the whole game, switching to +7
Demonbane a few times to kill some demons quickly. I lost Fire Brand
and whole bunch of good stuff by putting a bag of holding in another
one. Stupid! I never do that ... but there was still enough stuff in my
chest stash on DL6 that I was OK.
With the Ethiopian Eye to keep my Pw recharging and half damage magic
attacks, and the Orb of Fate to keep my Hp recharging and half damage
physical attacks, and +6 Magicbane to ward of curses ... how could I
lose?
Mind flayers hit me once or twice and made me forget things, but I kept
the identify spell and hardly noticed. A bones pile gave me four magic
markers, only one empty and all rechargable! So I wrote myself a book
of magic mapping to get through Gehennom; c?oGenocide to summon wraiths
on DL6 to get me up to XL30, and to summon nurses to increase my HP
over 300.
I forgot to blind myself before climbing to Medusa, but she took a look
at my SDSM and obligingly stoned herself before I saw her. Yay.
I created some unholy water by the infrequently-mentioned
cursed-confused-?oRemoveCurse technique, and used it to make
c?oGoldDetection. And I kept one uc?ofGoldDetecton and two !oConfusion
for the Fire plane.
I could go on and on, describing how spoiled I am ... but why bother.
I did the the ritual, descended to Moloch's sanctum. Jubilex was
hanging out there for some reason ... maybe because his level had been
a bones level, and the guy killed him there before dying of illness.
(That was an especially rich bones level.) I got the Amulet, climbed
out of Gehennom and the dungeon (Rodney showed up only twice, and the
Mysterious Force only four times), and made ready to leave the dungeon
.. and then I realized I only had four holy water left. Gulp ... but
it would have to be ok, there was no more time. I took my favorite
spellbooks along (I had been keeping all of my spellbooks in a
designated bag of holding on DL6, and level teleporting back whenever
necessary, but now I took my favorites and put them in my main bag of
holding). Made sure I still had the Amulet named REAL ONE, took an
assortment of wands of digging, death and teleportation, and climbed.
The Planes were a cakewalk. The Astral Plane was worrisome but not
hard either. I went to the right and my first altar was the correct
one. Famine tried to come near but my wands of teleportation and my
spell of teleport away kept him away.
So, barkeep, I'll have an ambrosia margarita, please, with salt on the
rim. And can you get that astral band of valkyries to play some Jimmy
Buffett?
(And everybody pray for me that I still have enough time to get my
homework done, it's due tonight at midnight.)

Ah, way to change a potential peril into an advantage!

Since mind flayers start causing amnesia, they've become a prime
genocide target for me. Spellcasters have the most to fear since they
don't like metal helmets.

Getting to Level 30 isn't *that* important, although you were playing
the class it's arguably most important for.

Ooh, close call. Playing Nethack well is largely a matter of 1.
reading the spoilers, and 2. remembering them! #2 is considerably more
difficult than #1.

The Plane of Fire's not so bad really -- it's Air that I hate finding
the portal on. Don't forget that wearing or wielding the Amulet can
help you track down the portal in a pinch.
