Following a run of bad luck with boxes and chests which, despite
use of untrap, erupted on towers of flame on opening, I now have
a burnt +0 cloak of magic resistance (currently being worn). I'm
not sure if it still retains its magic resistance but it doesn't
do anything for my AC. I also have a rotted elven leather helm
(also being worn) which similarly appears to have no effect on
AC. I'm not sure why it is rotted - I guess it got wet at some
point. Is there any way in which these items can be repaired or
are they now completely useless? I'm currently playing as an
elven wizard.

I am currently on Dlvl 4 and am loth to go lower without a better
AC (currently 6 - a pair of +2 iron boots).

Thanks
Mike (alias Clutey the Thaumaturge)

Yes, it does. Physical damage generally doesn't affect magical
properties (such as conferring MR, AC bonus due to enchantment, etc.).

There are a few ways to repair items. Scrolls [bs rapunag jrncba/nezbe,
fpebyyf bs qrfgebl nezbe] and potions [bs bvy] may be of help if used
properly.

You may want to peek in the first few levels of the Mines if they are
lit. Sometimes there's quite good armor to be found. Better take your
cat with you, as a body guard and cursedness-tester.

A wizard also needs to decide whether they'll sacrifice casting
ability for AC for the time being or look for non-metallic armor.

If it's rotted +0, the one point it normally gives goes away. It doesn't
matter for that *how* rotted it is-- armor gets no *negative*
enchantment from damage. If it had been +1 you'd still have had the one
point; a rotted +1 helm is as good as an undamaged +0 one.

You've probably been in a squabble with a pudding. Water doesn't damage
non-metallic armor.

I see that someone else has already answered that :-)

Raisse, killed by a brown pudding

The potion you mention [bs bvy] only helps rusted weaponry...

Many thanks for the assistance. Sadly, despite replacing the
rotted helm - yes, it might have been a brown pudding which did
for the helm - with a new one obtained after his cat had killed a
woodland elf, Clutey's lack of AC (or should that be excessive
AC?) along with his inability to write "Elbereth" correctly
contributed to his death shortly afterwards when he was
surrounded and overpowered by a swarm of soldier ants [Note 1].

Despite only reaching Dlvl 4 (where another promising wizard also
perished a week ago) Clutey gave me my best score to date during
the few weeks I have been playing NetHack.

RIP Clutey.

Note 1. He should probably have used one of his scrolls of
teleportation to get himself out of that nasty spot, rather than
attempting to scrawl "Elbereth" in the dust with his finger.
