never trust a vampire

After a few charges with a polymorph-wand on my pet, I ended up with a
vampire. Later on, i found a pair of boots, and since I already
identified all other kind of boots, i knew these were speed boots. My
vampire seems to like them as much as i do, since he kept them for
himself after i tried to make him check if they were cursed. I can't
think of any way to get them back, except waiting for him to die or
killing him myself.

Any idea how I could keep my vampire alive and get my boots back ?

A) Give him a better pair of boots.
B) Kill, take, raise undead, tame.

The latter may not be possible for you to pull off. An interesting
problem you got yourself there... Try not to focus on it too much or
you'll get yourself killed eh?

Vampires tend to die easily from lack of food. Just let him get all the
corpses first. You'll get your food and probably survive better. Not an
ideal pet, but being fastest makes it that much better. You'll find
another pair before hell if you look enough.

Option B) here won't work. Vampires are undead; so destroying a
vampire will give you a human corpse, and raising taming it would give
you a pet human (except that humans are untameable). NetHack doesn't
have a wand or spell that reanimates a corpse as undead...

As for the OP's question, you could also try luring the vampire into
combat with a nymph and hoping she steals the boots from it, then
getting them back from her corpse.
