It's my first time getting close to being able to ascend ... I'm pretty excited. I'd love to get some advice from you pros out there on how to prep to make sure I don't screw this up.

My checklist of stuff to do:
Level up to 30
Genocide L, disenchanter, green slime (already genocided master mind flayers)
Blank/bless useless scrolls
Dilute useless potions and bless for holy water
attach candles
Pick up remaining K-rations from Ludios and bless
Use cursed blank scrolls to nurse dance and get to ~400 hp, tin corpses
Lay a pile of 20-30 cockatrice eggs
Use remaining 3 /oW charges for blessed figurine of a Ki-rin, saddle, magic marker
Dump useless non-artifact weapons/armor and wands to get to unburdened
Save last wish (magic lamp or smoky potions) for Ice Box
fruit juice and fizzy potions for Ascension bar (I'm Mormon so no booze)

Is Ki-rin the best steed for an ascension run? I could try to sacrifice for Frost Brand, enchant to +7 and get a pet mountain centaur (save a wish) with shield of reflection instead. Ki-rin seems better because of flying, and I don't think I'll be dismounting for anything.

Anything else I need do? Charge up and eat rings of increase damage? I have almost all the good intrinsics (including disintegration resistance) except teleport control and poly control (I do have teleportitis from eating tengus). Here's my stats and inventory:

While I'm sure others will give you lots of advice, this is the
one thing that you absolutely need to fix. Being burdened (or
worse) is probably the best way to get yourself killed in the
endgame. Get rid of your junk.

For reference, here's what I would get rid of:

Don't. You are already XL:27 with is more than enough.

> Genocide L, disenchanter, green slime (already genocided master mind
flayers)

Next scroll on L is okay. The rest is unnecessary. Just don't melee the R's.

> Blank/bless useless scrolls

Can be done as soon as you have them; will reduce weight of the candles.

> Pick up remaining K-rations from Ludios and bless

Blessing K-rations is not necessary

> Use cursed blank scrolls to nurse dance and get to ~400 hp, tin corpses

You have sufficient HPs already; if you like more then consider doing alchemy
instead of nurse dancing.

> Lay a pile of 20-30 cockatrice eggs

Doing that procedure is an unnecessary delay.

> Use remaining 3 /oW charges for blessed figurine of a Ki-rin, saddle,
magic marker

If you think it's nice to ride a pet, well. Certainly quite unnecessary. But
keep in mind that riding when your saddle gets cursed by magic forces might
turn out to become some obstacle.

> Dump useless non-artifact weapons/armor and wands to get to unburdened

WHAT? - You said you are ready for the ascension run! - You certainly don't
need an ice box.

> fruit juice and fizzy potions for Ascension bar (I'm Mormon so no booze)

There's a Mormon religion in Nethack? :-}

[OT] Curious; if you're a Mormon, are you restricted drinking "binary" booze
in computer games as well by your religion? (Or is it just similar to the
issue of killing Izchak, dignity or something like that?)

No. You already have all weapons you need.

In case of teleportitis I'd definitely try to get teleport control; that
would have a high priority in my book. Reverse genocide tengu. But I see
you have the ring, so as long as you don't need that ring slot for other
use you're okay at the moment.

You're not wielding Grayswandir.

Uncurse it for the rite at the Vibrating Square.

Drop that second (unnecessary and dangerous) second bag of holding.

Erm.., why even a third one?!

If you bought all your protection already drop most of your gold; it's just
useless weight.

Drop duplicates of all items that aren't necessary to have multiple times;
there are a lot in your list.

Leave unused weapons and artifacts on a stash; take only those that you will
need with you. (Keeping one unenchanted artifact for disenchanters is fine.)

Leave unused armor on a stash. Take the helm of opposite alignment later with
you for the Astral Plane.

Blank that ASAP to avoid incidents.

Drop them all.

Congrats for getting there! I've only ascended twice, but here's my advice:

> My checklist of stuff to do:
> Level up to 30
I wouldn't do that. 27 is quite sufficient, and the higher your XP, the
more dangerous the monsters you'll meet. Better get the HPs up using
nurses or drinks.

> Genocide L, disenchanter, green slime (already genocided master mind flayers)
> Blank/bless useless scrolls
I'd keep a few cursed blank scrolls as well – you might want them for
reverse genocide or portal detection.

> Dilute useless potions and bless for holy water
> attach candles
> Pick up remaining K-rations from Ludios and bless
> Use cursed blank scrolls to nurse dance and get to ~400 hp, tin corpses

Generally, I'd say if you do all this you're quite over-prepared. But
for a first ascension, this is probably not an error.

And: The game is hard enough so that an ascension is quite an
achievement even without that extra bragging… I'd only do this if there
isn't anything dangerous near on Astral.

I'd go for teleport control if you can. It frees up a ring slot, which
you can use for extrinsics that might save your life later on.

You may want to switch to jumping on Astral, using the lighted
Candelabrum – depends on strategy.

I'd keep at least one K-ration in open inventory. More if you're
getting close to Famine on Astral.

The extra turn to get this out of the bag can be crucial… But I see you
do have another one in the main inventory.

Get rid of some trash in order to move more lightly…

Good thing to have on Astral!

Take only what you can eat quickly (mainly K-rations).
I don't see death here. If it's not that spiked wand, it might be worth
a wish (or try polymorphing the junk wands).

I'd curse one of these for confusion (or drop them if you rely on
forgotten spells). Don't keep the cursed one in your main inventory to
avoid your God granting you 'favours'.
Bless that one and keep it in open inventory.

Hahaha, no I don't think anyone's going to get upset with me for drinking digital alcohol. If that were a problem, I'd probably be in BIG trouble if I got caught repeatedly consorting with incubi/succubi.

On that note, I thought through what a "Mormon" conduct would include:
- Law of Tithing: you have to give at least 10% of the gold you collect to an aligned priest
- Word of Wisdom: no potions of booze, black potions (coffee), or brown potions (tea). For a samurai or monk, brown potions are okay but no dark green potions (green tea).
- Law of Chastity: Get "married" before consorting with a foocubus. In order to get married, you have to tame it first, then bring it to an altar and "pray" next to it. Finally, you have to give it/get from it a ring of adornment. Then you can't be with any other foocubus unless yours dies, and you "marry" another. (Lest anyone suggest polygamy is okay, that would be a "Mormon Fundamentalist" conduct and would be separate)
- Missionary Work: Convert every convertible altar. This includes ones with aligned priests (to put some challenge into the game).
- Eternal Marriage: Ascend with your "married" pet foocubus

Gee! - I am already in trouble fully understanding Nethack's built-in
divine issues; yet following additional behavioural restrictions would
certainly be beyond my capabilities. ;-}

What kind of time control do you have on converting convertible altars with aligned priests?

Dan Day

You do have a goal to ascend, right?

K, you are no longer Mormon. You are They WHO were Mormon but fell to a Chaotic priest and now bow in full submission to said Chaotic priest and call him simply "Yawheh" .

First several ascensions it is appropriate to over prepare. Go for it.

Ditto.

After a over prepared marathon game I can end up doing that to rid my
game of problematic scrolls.

There's a never ending need for more holy water if you use it regularly.
Occasionally for unholy water as well.

In spite of weight issues I prefer to do that at the vibrating square
not at any point before then.

You use even more holy water than I do.

And/or alchemy to maximize hit points.

A ton of effort for a few powerful weapons.

Riding in a first ascension? Unless you've been riding most of the
game, pass.

Number zero item to do. Start this move!

Corny ascension tricks on your first ascension? Okay.

At some point in the late game I no longer consider teleport control
optional.

Worth repeating - Get unburdened this move.

I hope the cut-n-paste missed the fact that you're currently wielding
Grayswandir. Nothing in your Quiver? Get some missiles.

> Rings
> J - a cursed ring of free action (on right hand)

I don't like to have any cursed items in the late game.

> m - 6 uncursed +0 elven daggers

Quiver these.

> o - the blessed rustproof +1 Excalibur
> r - the uncursed rustproof +0 Mjollnir

You likely have access to at least Demonbane at this point. I like
ascending with a lot of artifacts.

> o - 9 uncursed K-rations

By the time you are at the vibrating square I don't think you'll want
more food items than these, but maybe leave the K-rations on level one
and have an assortment for the final climb.

> Gems ('*')

Artifacts are worth more by weight. Select these by value if you take
any.

> t - an uncursed stone called luckstone

Should be blessed and in open inventory. Or blessed and in the bag as a
backup.

Why, specifically, Demonbane?

Maybe if you need some light and don't want to use up all seven candles
in parallel?

Of course there is an advantage during the home-run to teleport to the
upstairs quickly using those many teleportaton scrolls and the teleport
control intrinsic/extrinsic. Of course "need" is a strong term and
arguable, but I agree with Doug. (I occasionally even wished for that
ring if I hadn't got it at that point, and in the past I also ate The
Wizard's corpse to get that intrinsic.)

YAAP!

Quick summary: I followed Janis' advice, except never was able to genocide L as I ended up never finding a single scroll of genocide and I somehow misplaced my wand of wishing with 2 charges plus a wrest intact. How do you misplace a wand of wishing? Maybe some nymph somewhere has it and is putting on her eyeliner with it...

Also, I had 4 stashes in the dungeon and for some reason couldn't find the stash with my candles in it, so I burned a magic lamp wishing for one candle. Got a last wish out of one of my smoky potions (quaffed 20 and got one wish...) and wasted it on a blessed figurine of an Archon (figuring I'd find that wand eventually). Should have opted for that scroll of genocide, because I had some nasty encounters with master liches and arch-liches on my way back up. Cockatrice corpses got me through several, but when I hit the Astral plane I had to resort to my sabers.

Alchemized and ended up getting over 400 hitpoints with blessed potions of healing. Didn't need it though, as I never dipped below 360. Then went down and killed Rodney with Vlad's wand of death, got the book of the dead, performed the invocation, and proceeded to nab the Amulet.

On the way up, I swear that between levels 35-41 I must have been "mysterious forced" back down about 20 times. It seems like it took forever to get back to the valley of the dead. When I finally did, I didn't encounter a single mysterious force for the rest of the way up. Rodney showed up three times plus the mandatory appearance at the plane of Earth. Each time, I hit him with Vlad's wand of death and instantly killed him.

When I got to Astral, I killed Famine and made my way to Odin's altar first. Then I killed Death and saw it was Loki's altar. I didn't want to risk facing Pestilence, so I put on my helm and changed to Chaotic, and #offered the Amulet to Loki. Hopefully Tyr wasn't too upset. To be honest, I was kind of miffed when he took away my telepathy and divine protection when I #prayed to Odin for unholy water to get that cursed unicorn horn. Plus several of his priests and angels tried to kill me in Astral. So he got what was coming to him.

All in all, I'm satisfied that I finally ascended! Here comes the points list:

dissappeared.

To me the need is to clear a ring finger. I'll want free action, slow
digestion and at times conflict.

In particular without using a wish. There are two chaotic artifact
weapons that are easy for any player to acquire in the early game
whether they are chaotic or not. There are two lawful artifact weapons
that are easy for any player to acquire in the late phase of a marathon
game whether they are lawful or not. I've ended up with all four in
several very long games.

There is a class of monsters who are generated with either Demonbane or
Sunsword if they do not already exist in a game. One species has a 5%
chance of an attempt to convert it's initial weapon to one of them. The
other species has a 100% chance of trying to convret it's initial weapon
to one of them. In a marathon game of over preparation there's plenty
of time to spawn and kill those monsters even if they are peacefulls.

You'd still be marrying a demon; even atheists find that hard to
swallow.

On the other hand, I've come to accept that Nethack player characters
are not Nice People. They have no friends and no hobbies. They kill
cute animals, and often walk around in public with no trousers. And so
on.

Vlad is also immune to death rays, being undead. Of course, the OP said

Right -- I see that now. At the time, I could have sworn I read
"killed Rodney and Vlad with a wand of death". Funny how the mind
works -- or doesn't.

Indeed, I would've said the Chaste conduct would mean absolutely no
melee contact with nymphs or foocubi. Which would admittedly be
difficult to pull off, especially in the early game, as nymphs are
relatively fast and can be hard to kill if you don't have any good
attack wands yet.

Don't wake them up in the first place.

I must be doing something wrong, because I thought nymphs
were normally generated awake (except in special situations,
such as treasure zoos).

I see many people playing careless; kicking doors and chest open, and
similar apparently bad behaviour. Of course it can happen that the RNG
will leave you locked in some area, with no pick-axe, wand, key, etc.,
and at least one nymph on that level.
But those are just specific situations that makes the general rule not
void. I suggest to not make noise, not wakeup nymphs, not let your pets
come close to nymphs unless they can kill them - you can also dance
around pet and nymph until she's dead -, not do things that give you
the aggravate monsters property (quite unavoidable in the late game).

Or you are not stealthy and - with some bad (RNG) luck - either
enter a court, zoo (or ...) or stand in line of sight with her.

It took me a very long time before I learned to play where I often
encountered nymphs still asleep. Far more than just not kicking down
doors until you have explored as much of the level as possible.

I eventually figured out that my pet was exploring levels separately
from me and attacking sleeping nymphs. There's an art to moving
through corridors with your pet behind you so yuo lead the exploration
but moving through rooms with your pet ahead of you so they thin the
crowds and kill about as many monsters as you do to balance
advancement between you and yout pet.

Now I enter a room, move to where I can fire on the nymph, start the
barrage, kill her as she moves towards me. Does not work every time but
it sure works much better than having no idea where my pet went and
suddenly a nymph emerges from a corridor two squares away. Which is
what happened to me all the time when I was a newer player.

In fact I originally learned the idea in games where I lost my pet to
the watch captain's long sword in mine town so I just started exploring
on my own. Huh, without a pet I found all sorts of sleeping nymphs.
Which cycles me back to the art of leading in a corridor, following in a
room.

Don't do that, then. Attach 7 candles to the candelabrum as soon as
possible, and then you can use any other candles for light. They do burn up,
true.

In the very early game you have to kick doors, until you
get an unlocking device (or, I suppose, a pick-axe, but
unlocking devices are more common, especially if you
haven't been into the Mines yet). I try to avoid kicking
doors down when possible, for several reasons (not
least, because I'm paranoid that it could be a shop),
but in a typical game I generally have to kick down a
dozen or so doors before I find an unlocking device --
except when playing as a role that starts with one,
e.g., a Tourist.

I was not aware that a chest could be opened by
kicking. Does forcing a chest with a junk weapon
(e.g., orcish dagger) wake nymphs? I often do
that if I don't have a key or lock pick yet.

Maybe my pets are waking them. I do tend to
try to keep a pet when possible in the early game.

I tend to kick doors a lot, and I think it's a valid way to play.

One thing that makes me do it less now is it's quite useful to close
doors to prevent your pet from wandering, and from killing and eating
potentially useful monsters.

It's very likely if you lose sight of your pet for any length of time.

Now that I'm playing early game characters and trying new roles (currently playing Slash'EM and doing quite well with a droven Necromancer), I'm realizing just how frustrating nymphs can be. When I only played Valkyries, it was never hard to cut them to ribbons. With weaker fighters, they're a real pain. My most frustrating experience was a knight who got an early wand of death, only to have a nymph steal it and zap me with it around level 9. I was playing another promising game a few days later, when I came across the bones:

ME: Hmm, four dead green elf corpses. I wonder if this level is a bones level?
NETHACK: You hear a nearby zap. The death ray hits you. You die... DYWYPI?
ME: (CENSORED)

First I want to apologize for not quoting whom I am responding to - I'm nearing a semi-ripe old 30 years of age and have no clue how to do that (i'm typing on a mobile phone if that matters).

OP, welcome to demi-godhood! For future reference, with multiple slashem ascensions and a nethack ascension under my belt, I feel qualified to add some principle based advice on ascension runs.

First and foremost, being and staying unburdened is key! Secondly, you should have at least one reusable response/defense against any instadeath or threat that is likely to occur. In slashem, I frequently use ki-rin for the ascension run because of the new monster spell "create pool", but it is indeed unecessary in vanilla. Third principle is to save those wishes, and not the one you need to spend 120 turns wresting from the wand! The game can throw a curve at any moment - that wish is your wild card. Fourth principle - have an uber pet. IMO, an archon/solar can be better than an amulet of lifesaving because it works when you are paralyzed, stunned, asleep, immobile, distracted, can be used proactively and reactively, protects you automatically, and does it more than once. Fifth principle (abundantly discussed already) is dump the junk! Sixth, anything that is a threat to your BoH should be treated as if it can cause instadeath, because it ends the game just as quickly. Seventh principle is that the longer it takes you to ascend, the more likely it is that you wont. I prepare shortcuts through all the maze levels before hand, and save about 6-10 wands of digging for getting around any threats, hordes, or unnecessarily convoluted corridor wrap arounds on the way up. There are others that I may not have thought to mention, but I feel that these are the basics. Again, congrats!

It can. But you may destroy breakable items inside, before it gets open
("You hear a muffled shatter."), so breaking the lock by kicking is not
very advisable. Sometimes, it may be your only choice to get at the
(non-breakable) contents.

Just use a non-cursed dagger to #force the lock.
(Should always be possible even in the early game.)
