Just died in the Castle, killed by quaffing an unidentified potion of
fruit juice and choking. I Do Not Believe It. I'd killed all the monsters,
used up the WoW [2], and I had the boots of levitation I needed to do Medusa
and Fort Ludicrous [1] (which I'd been in and killed all the guards on the
outside) and donate, and finally get to do the Quest, and one lousy potion
kills me. I need mind-control - I've died 3 or 4 times now while thinking
"and after that, the Quest.".
I'd reached 14th level by killing things, too.

6 392754 Kirsty-V choked on her food
in The Dungeons of Doom on level 26 [max 27]. 157 [157]
Choked on a quick snack.

I'll crack this damn game yet... think I would have ascended that time,
otherwise.

I was playing a Valk. Which intrinsic do they start with? You betcha.

Progress report: I got GoP from a fountain, and MoJo from an altar on
level one. I was L8 by the time I left L1 for good, and regrettably
permanently invisible - robbed 2-3 other shops on the way down, usually by
digging in the back and running round the front while the shopkeeper said
"What? Where'd she go?" - Mr. late Bobayai contributed speed boots to this
endeavour. Found Fort Ludicrous, but no means of levitation, so used
conflict to kill all the critters outside. A magic lamp yielded GDSM.
Found the Quest entrance. Found Medusa, but had levitation by then, so
killed the Medusa: _I_'m the bitch, dammit, and she ain't allowed to be.
Cleaned out the Ludious amounts of money in Fort Ludicrous, and donated
the lot. A graveyard yielded my first 'unearned' levels, and I went on the
Quest - Surtur was a pushover, but the Orb of Fate is kinda nifty. Cleaned
out the Castle without any conflict after the first room (my kills! my
kills!), and the WoW in the Castle yielded BBoH and all the armour and
magic markers I needed to get rustproof fireproof +7 Mojo AC-35 [my
backup weapon was and is a rusty +3 Dragonbane, which suits me fine - I
only really need it for blue dragons...], and the black dragon
there combined with my trusty AoMB yielded the intrinsic I'd been
worried about. Cleaned out the Valley without conflict: just splattered
the undead with MoJo nice and systematic-like. Working down into Gehennom
yielded my 3rd AoLS - well, the 3rd I'd seen - the first I'd collected,
since the other two had been hung round critters' necks. I'd lose two more
like that before getting another off Vlad's Tower. Chased Asmodeus
upstairs - kill 'im on the way back. Killed Juibilex with trivial ease.
Killed Baalzebub - had to chase him up one level, but he foolishly hung
around after fleeing upstairs. Got down to Orcus - up to Vlad's - slew
Vlad for the Candelabrum - cleaned out Orcus - attacked Orcus on principle
- chased him up a level - went down a level and saved.

So now I'm wondering if my next post in this thread'll be YASD or first
ascension. Any bets?

[It's a good game: it's the first time I've gone on the Quest, and I
completed it fine. It's the third time I've arrived at Fort Ludicrous:
I've died outside once, killed the outsiders and never come back once, and
so this is the first time I've cleaned it out. It's the third time I've
arrived at Medusa's Isle, and I've drowned there once, and let the bitch
escape once only to be slain by her later once, and this is the first
time I've successfully done the Isle. And I've arrived at the Castle
twice, and choked there once, and so this is my first successful Castle.
So many firsts: I _want_ a first ascension, dammit. But I suspect the
bloody Wizard will prove a match for me...]

So, one recover later, I descended deeper into Gehennom.

Wizard was a pushover, so was the sanctum: the only real challenge was
the plane of Air, where an Archon got its hands on a SoCM and created
several monsters including a couple more Archons and lots of SoCMs got
read: I had all my holy water unblessed by them (!) and so couldn't
remove my by now cursed RoL and RoR, which I wore to the endgame, so
no conflict - I managed to fight out losing one of my AoLS, and ran
for the portal - I didn't use conflict in this game at all after the
treasure zoo at the start of the Castle. Killed Famine on the way to
Loki's altar on the right, went back, walked round Death and found
Odin in the middle. Bingo. Not bad for a first-time-Quester, eh?

The interesting thing about this ascension is it was totally abuse-free
and indeed sporting: I only saw one bones file, and that was pretty
useless: I didn't polypile, or PoP the WoY, or leave him in Vlad's place,
or nurse dance, or anything...

I carry either a sack with at least one !PoHW in it at all times,

You read the Scroll of Spoiling --more--

You feel enlightened

Ok at this stage, i reckon ascension is as close to auto as it gets ...
things i'd do before attempting to go on if i was playing it safe:

i) Genocide L;NH cockatrice and gelationous cube -- wish for the (PYEC
and recharge the (MM and if this doesn't yield enough ?SoG then
polypile.
ii) Curse the bell, and get to level 30 and around 500 HP's by chowing
down wraiths. this will take some time - but hey.
iii) Place the Fort Ludicrous rations on the stair well's on the way up
thru Gehennom - Orb of Fate makes less time consuming than otherwise.
About 2 or 3 rations near each stairwell makes starvation unlikely.
You might like to leave some holy water as well, and rebless everything
that's not blessed as you do the dash out of hell.
Have a first aid sack - containing a blessed unicorn horn (_another one_)
and 2 holy waters per BoH you hold - keep buttloads of Holy water
in your BOH's - i tend to have 20-30 in total. Bless everything
you carry before hitting the wiz - this'll slow down his cursing a
bit.

You shouldn't have much trouble after this - find the vib sq before you
hit the @WoY. Conflict is useful for the @WoY, but not desperate -
if you're magic proof and have buttloads of HP's and there are no
L;NHcb in the game the critters he summons can't be too bad. Might
be worth getting a [HoOA for the plane of Air - A's can suck a lot.
Then again, i tend to do the planes via c?SoGD and just running straight
for the portal.

watch out for Famine on the Astral plane. A wellcharged /WoD is useful
here - with a low AC (near -50 is doable) and carving a path with the
/WoD getting to an altar isn't hard.

Good luck ... keep us informed.

I never did find Vorpy, but once you're energy resistant, energy vortices
make a convenient place to hide out in a tough place rather than a
killer... as for Jabberwocks, I'm not sure that move close and wield Vorpy
and hit and wield MoJo is actually quicker than throwing MoJo at 'em as
many times as it takes. Woulda been handy against the Wiz, tho'.

This was a problem: the bBoH got unblessed once by the Wiz, and later all
the water in it got unblessed. If that'd happened in the opposite order,
I'da been screwed. Keeping water in a few seperate bags is indeed the
Right Thing.

Ah, who needs level 30 anyway? My kills, dammit. Also, if a wraith gets
killed at the back of the crowd, you have to wade through to his corpse,
if you even see the corpse get created: without RoC you get to eat every
corpse you make...

Never did catch him, and I had no means of charging it. He'd certainly
used it up. I'll prolly try and get the WoD another time.

>Watch out for the planes. :-) Got a crystal ball with reasonable charge?

Nope, but the AoY served quite well in that respect. The Orb of Fate was
drained. You were right in that the Plane of Air was a killer.

>> So many firsts: I _want_ a first ascension, dammit. But I suspect the

Hah, hah, I was wrong. :-)

>The Wizard isn't too hard, just a pain...watch out for his pets. (RoC is

I'd not be able to get the ToM, of course...

Rather unsporting: it's clearly the intent that the Wiz should pester you
all game, so I never did PoP or Vlad or WoDigging him.

>Found a HoOA yet?

Call me a purist and a roleplayer to boot, but I don't _like_ wearing
HoOAs unless I just put one on by accident and it's cursed. Seems to me
that the character would hate it when she took it off, yesno?

Perhaps he'd like to make an ascension without abuse.
Points i and ii are widely considered abuse. Conflict
is not, but I consider it a sign of skill to ascend
without resorting to conflict. YMMV.

What use is XP at that stage?? You'll never make enough to go up a level

potions of gain level (after the first), succubi/incubi must be killed on

hmm - yep, i've done endless number of stupid things resulting in deaths
of "here comes an ascension..."

yeah, ;'s are a matter of taste i guess, but i rarely get levels from
xp at the point i'm getting genocides

If you're not lawful, golden/guardian naga's can be a real pain ... just
from personal experience

true, thats why i try and only genocide gel. cube. (not the other b's),
and don't genocide anything except L;NH cockatrice gel cube

in response to the abuse claims, i'll just point out these comments were in
the context of me believing this was a first ascension, and for my first
ascension i was more or less saying ... I WANT TO WIN ... i didn't use save
files or any "external abuses", but as far as i cared anything internal was
fair game

nowadays, i don't wish for quest artifacts or curse the bell, but still polypile
if the opportunity presents itself. i usually finish with wishes (8 extras last time
(Calvin the Caveman)) so i prolly shouldn't polypile either.

> >You shouldn't have much trouble after this - find the vib sq before you
> >hit the @WoY.
> Indeed (might try it the other way some time, just for fun...)

yeah, i've considered this ... one day i want to try a "hamiltonian game",
or as close is as possible with still completing, i.e. go down till i find
mine stairs, then do mine, then keep going down to quest ... i.e. absolutely
no backtracking except if forced by level teleport accident or such ... no
intentional backtracking i guess is what i mean.

congrats btw,

I reached Medusa's Isle still wanting the levels for the Quest - and if I
recall correctly I got them all (save one PoGL) through the traditional
means of hitting monsters with a big hammer. 1,000XP per ; would have been
useful, to say the least.

That's not so much of a challenge,if spellcasting isn't one of your
priorities, and you dance with nurses for the hp.
And even hitpoints are not that important.I ascended an elf in vanilla
nethack with 196 max hitpoints and without artifacts.

Genocide cockatrices, the best weapon in the game? No way.
Guardian Nagas can paralyse you for ~4 rounds, and that can be a real
pain in the rump, esp.since they usually get first attack.
That's a feature i hate anyways: many monsters that are defined as
slightly faster than humans can *move next to you and attack in
the same move*;beasties of this kind are:
cats and dogs,Yeti,leocrottas,most full-grown Nagas,Ki-Rin,Centaurs(not
sure here),jaguars,Minotaurs,Giant Mummies(Ettin Mummies?),Ogre Kings,
giant spiders,Snakes,Vampire Lords;
The result is,that when you are losing a fight against a little dog
on level two and decide to run away with no more than normal speed,
doggie will chase you and still do one attack per round.Stoopid - dogs
do NOT have double speed.

Well, not (always) the best against obtrusive demons...

Centaurs yes. I think some minor demons (homonculi?), elves, SOLDIER
ANTS (annoying, annoying, annoying), and one or two other a's do this.

However I have never seen a ki-rin, minotaur or vampire lord generated
before getting speed, even in NH+.

No kidding. This is my major cause of death at low levels now, being
unable to run from "moderately fast" creatures. Large dogs and cats
are particularly irritating especially when pulled up by a SoCM. And if
_you_ are fast, your stupid pets take forever to catch up, which is
ridiculous.

I don't mind so much being fast, and my pet being slow, as I mind the trouble I
have synchronizing speeds with them. If you could speed them up to match
yourself (and, for that matter, tell how fast they were, and whether or not you
were as fast as it), it would be very helpful. As it is, when I zap a wand of
haste monster at myself, then at my pet, it appears that they have become very
fast, rather than just fast. At least they appear to jump around a lot more,
which if we're both moving at the same speed shouldn't happen.
