Hello.
I've managed to ascend a valk (previous ascension was a priest) and it was an
extremely easy ordeal. Probably I got lucky, but let me outline some points and
you can judge for yourself.
1) Got a bag of holding and /poly before entering Fort Ludious (sp?).
I got anal retentive and carried almost all of the fort's object to a nearby
altar, arranged it in heaps and started polypiling.
Soon I had an obscene AC and a heap of magic markers (which were used to write
?charging to keep the process in motion).
Also got a couple of pet dragons in the process.
2) Got the PYEC from the /wishing.
The most valuable artifact there is! After getting the amulet, I just kept
recharging my /death and the wizard was easy to deal with.
I also pumped my =damage to +4 (Q: can it take +5 and up?)
3) Had =conflict, =regeneration, and a nice bunch of /teleportation before I got
to the astral plane.
Now that's a novel strategy: don't bother fighting, just teleport everything
away while you seek the correct altar.
Have fun,
Alex.
You can TRY to charge a ring as high as you like, it just becomes riskier
the higher the ring is charged. After a ring is (I'm not exactly sure on
this) +2 or +3, there is a chance that it will explode if charged any
higher. The odds of this happenning increase greatly with greater
charges. In my current game as a Tourist (I got the PYEC _legally_ <g>),
I've been polypiling for rings (among other things), and have several
each of =increase damage and =protection. I've been wearing my best ring
of each type, and then attempting to charge my second-best rings in hopes
of getting them charged higher than the ones I'm wearing. I've managed
to get a +5 version of each, but not without vaporizing several others in
the process. In my last game of note (the wizard I ascended), I got a +7
=protection from polypiling without charging it at all. While this was
quite a stroke of luck, it does indicate that the game isn't _entirely_
opposed to the existence of such things. :)
Happy Hacking,
John

what ring has it been before polypiling?
What about the chargeless rings (like warning, ulg!) what charge will
they have after polypiling?

To answer both questions, I really don't know what kind of ring it was to
begin with, but it most likely WAS a chargeless ring, so the game had to
assign it a charge once it became one.
(from what I can tell, the same thing happens with tools. So once I've
used up a magic marker or bag of tricks, I put it back on the pile to be
poly'ed again)
