Technically this isn't my first ascension, but the previous one was save
scummed (yes I know >_<, but those days are behind me now) several years ago
on an older version (there wasn't even steeds in the game then) and I really
haven't played it since. I've forgotten most of it, and some things have
changed or added as well.

Anyway, after several YASDs and one YAAD lately (left dungeon with a fake
amulet -_-) I was going for the "safe" ascension this time. No holds barred,
polypile, wish, genocide etc Valkyrie.

I got lucky really early on and found a ring shop. I used my pet to clean
out most of it, and bought the rest. Good points were levitation, free
action, poly+control, tele control, warning, AoLS. Bad points were that most
of the good rings were inedible. At this point I didn't know what rings were
what, so I saved them up for later identification.

As I came down into mine town three of the shops had a magic lamp in them,
one of them blessed. That first wish immediately went into a SDSM.
Previously I'd wish for GDSM at this point, but this time I wanted to try a
different game. Putting reflection in the body armor slot would free up both
the amulet one (for AoLS) and/or the shield one (for #twoweapon - never done
that before either). The other reason is that early in the game you're still
very vulnerable to sleep wands and the like, and with reflection it would be
the attacker having a problem. I saved the other two lamps; one as a
permanent light source, the other for a potential later wish.

The rest of the mines were pretty painless, and I even found some gauntlets
of ogre power. I didn't hit a real snag until Sokoban. The chest had an AoR
instead of the BoH I needed. At this point I was more or less constantly
managing my inventory trying not to get burdened. Potions and scrolls I
didn't need at the time were stashed in chests located around the dungeon.
Luck would return my way again though when I found a polymorph wand. Some
select piling later, and those unicorn horns I'd been saving up gave me what
I sought.

My basic kit was almost ready (got Mjollnir from offering), but I was
lacking speed boots. I skipped the quest, and more or less headed straight
down to the castle. Some fancy flying later through the back door, and no
boots in the armory. Plan B worked though and the first wish went to
fooproof boots. Second to PYEC. Next ones were helm of telepathy, cloak of
protection and a magic marker. I really like the telepathy since that means
I can stash away the orb of fate most of the time, and instead just use it
for level teleport. PYEC already gives me magic protection so I figured a
CoP would be the best bang for the wish, so to speak. Good AC early was a
goal this time.

I headed up to my base of operations at lvl21 (co-aligned altar with
priest), and poly'd a bit before the quest. This wasn't really necessary,
but it got rid of a lot of junk scrolls/potions that took up space and
weight - and gave me the armor and weapon enchantment you see in the end
game. At this point my gear was overkill for the quest, and I cleaned house
fast. Headed back down to the valley of the dead, did protection racket,
killed priest, headed back up to base camp, and got extra protection there
too. It was only at this point that I finally used the polymorph rings. That
got me some extra protection (down to -2AC naked) along with searching
intrinsic. The latter was extremely useful down in gehennom for the special
levels.

The rest of the game was fairly anti-climatic really. In the astral plane I
ended up having to check all three altars before finally ending up at the
correct one. Famine and pestilence went under from a WoD fast, and Death
himself died in about two hits (I was surprised). At most I was 50 HP down
from my max I think.

Things that didn't go as planned:

- I never got teleport control intrinsic (damn you tengu!)
- I never saw a single teleport wand in the game at all
- I wasted several wishes in vain trying to get magicbane, and ended up
genociding mind flayers and all liches just in case
- I ran out of holy water at the end and was just running straight for the
win in the hope I wouldn't get too much stuff cursed
- I almost YASD to a cockatrice corpse after killing Rodney the first time.
I was going down the stairs and didn't notice that the corpse and Book of
the Dead had made me burdened. Thankfully AoLS saved the day.
- I could probably have gotten a way better score had I bothered to bring my
stash of gems from base camp, but didn't want to bother with the extra
weight.

So, what next? I think I've more or less covered the Valkyrie angle. Any
suggestions?

why on earth would you want to stash the orb of fate?
It confers half damage- which is a Mega Good Thing.

you know you can drink these to get more max hp- right?

Because it's extremely heavy and usually makes me burdened when exploring.
I'd pick up a scroll or potion and go burdened - and then have to stash in
the BoH. Even then I couldn't go long before I got put over the limit. My
character was pretty overkill by the time I went down the gehennom stairs
(-40AC), so I never really needed the half damage. After cleaning up my
inventory for the end game I brought it out again just in case, since I had
no idea what the planes were going to be like.

Hmm.. now that's an idea. I think I'd rather not have my items cursed in the
first place, but it's something to think about for a challenge.

Sounds like a plan :)

Look in my bag of holding - there's 11 more there. My last failed ascension
attempt I actually used 5 of those because of tag teaming by dual Rodneys
and the High Priest. I had no instakill, and the summons were pretty nasty.
A FH pot heals about 400+, so I figured I'd have a decent safety margin. The
2 in the main inventory were for quick quaffing. I was paranoid, and wanted
this one to be an absolute win :).

by the time you find liches, you should have *some* way to engrave [like
wands]-- fight carefully and you can get an athame unscathed..

I thought Elbereth didn't protect you from distance attacks like curses?
That's my real problem with liches really, not so much the actual monster
itself, but having to use blessed scrolls of remove curse and holy water to
restore the inventory to normal use. Having to rewrite it just because the
lich in question flees to the closest stairs is a pain.

That was also the problem with Rodney this ascension, but to a lesser
degree - I ran out of holy water re-blessing some of my gear.

well, its not that Elbereth protects you from any attack actually- its
that it scares the monsters so that they dont attack you.

monsters wont cast spells at you if they are scared..
also- holy water is cheap and easy by that point in the game- take all
the potions you are never going to use, go swimming (or find some fountains,
or water walk, etc) , collect them, #dip into one potion of holy water, now
you have many...

As far as them going to the stairs- only the purple Ls [master/arch liches]
do that afaik- the plain and demi lich varieties wont do it- you encounter
them way first- they can carry athames too... also, if you check the level
telepathically when you come down stairs [and are standing on the up]- you
can see if there are purple Ls, if so engrave and wait for it to come to you-
you are on the <, so it cant get away.

The fear check is only made when the monster is very close to you and
in line of sight. 6 times out of 7, it only makes them flee for 1d10
turns. Monsters that are not adjacent to you will still cast haste
self, cure self, invisibility, aggravate monster, summon nasties, and
double trouble. Some monsters that can be summoned by summon nasties
are unconcerned by the name of the Queen of the Valar. (Specifically,
elf-lords, Elvenkings, and minotaurs.)

You are correct that they will not cast direct attack spells if they
can't attack you in hand-to-hand combat, however, so while on Elbereth
you will not be subjected to wizardly attack spells except those cast by
Thoth Amon (human), the Wizard of Yendor (human), the Dark One (human),
ki-rin (lawful minion), Archons (lawful minion), Neferet the Green
(human), guides (human), and apprentices (human).

So yes, Her name will protect you from being cursed by liches.

The orb of fate also confers magic resistance, and unless said monster can
steal the PYEC and cast FoD in one turn I should have time to get it out
from the bag of holding.

False. It confers 50% spell damage reduction. 50% spell damage reduction
will not in any way protect you from the "touch of death" spell.

Well I'll be...

I could have sworn I read the OoF gave you magic resistance from a spoiler I
read a while ago. I must have confused it with the Orb of Detection. Guess
I'll go for a cloak of magic resistance next time instead of protection.
Eyes of the overworld is another option.

Thanks for the correction :).

Hmm... don't covetous monsters only steal _your_ quest artifact?

Yes. Unless I am playing a conduct game, if I get the chance I get
another class' quest artifact with magic resistance. It frees up a
valuable slot, and has been pretty darn safe in my experience.

Ah, thanks for the info, I didn't realize this.
