Will it change into dragon scales of another color, or potentially
some other type of armor?

It changes to a random type of armor.

So in fact it will _never_ turn into another colour scale.

Since DSM is considered magical, but DS is not, it may even be worth
using a ?oEA on the scales before polypiling for a robe or GoP or
whatever.
Don't know how many people do this in practice. I've never had the
luxury of so many spare marker charges, myself.

Fedora, too. Not that anyone cares about a fedora except for style
points. And mummy wrapping. There's never a shortage of mummy
wrappings unless you toss all of yours into the poly pile.

In the weaspons category the same applies to crysknife, scapel, rubber
hose and athame. If athames could be gotten from poly piling I would
do it in a lot more games.

There are a few types of food that never appear from poly piling that
are plentiful in long games from how they do get generated. Certain
types of tools as well.

Elven cloak and boots are magical and far more plentiful than dragon
scales. I've done endurance games where I collected one of each color
scales and tossed the rest into the poly pile. I used elven cloaks and
boots as the source for magical items.

Since polymorphing objects creates new objects with the same probability
as object randomly found on the dungeon floor, and since neither dragon
scales nor dragon scale mail can be created randomly, polying then
_always_ results in other types of armour, and never in dragon scales of
another colour.
