Try again just like you did, but make sure you have these.
(HA) weapon
boots of Speed
2 rings of speed
Staff of Speed
resistance to fire on at least one item
potions of resist fire
potions of healing
potions of restore mana

After invulnerability runs out and you've weakened him, use resist fire
potions along with the RF or R item so he can't kill you in one hit.
With all three speed items and the Staff you should always be 2 moves faster
than him.
This allows you to heal and hit each move.
or Hit, Hit, move back... Hit, Hit, move back.

I keep a Mass Genocide scroll around for last minute removal of the Balrog
from my level just in case I can't kill him.

There is also of course the option of keeping backups.
Make sure you hit him with EVERY hit then save.
If you see "you missed him", load the last save.
repeat. nine potions of invulnerability should be enough hits to kill him
this way with a Holy Avenger weapon.

Use phase-door. Don't let him touch you. Try to engage him in a large
room so phase door doesn't block him from your line of sight. Teleport
takes you too far away and wastes your invulnerability potions.

Use wands of drain life. Don't let him touch you!

Be Very Fast at least! Preferably have two permaspeed items and haste
self.

Know how many turns the invulnerability and resist heat potions last.
Quaff another when you count up to that many turns. Use invulnerability
first, and resist heat once you run out.

(You can quaff them all at once and have the same cumulative effect, I
believe. If you're not save-scumming, though, you might want to drink
them more slowly in case you have to bug out and fight another day. It
takes a while to collect invulnerability potions.)

Have (R) or (RF) armor.

Quaff potions of restore mana when you run out of mana. Keep working
him with non-fire spells once your wands are gone.

9 invulnerability potions should be enough if you don't dally and have a
lot of drain life firepower, but run around 50' for a while a get some
resist heats too, if you want to be sure. I killed him with 7 invul and
a few resist heats. At no time was I ever in any real danger. :)

If he summons things you don't want around, you can try to get the
Balrog to run them over and kill them so you don't have to.

Wishlist item: a save file that you could play back a movie of your
latest Balrog kill with.

The Balrog:
At least 99 of these creatures have been killed by contributors to your
monster memory. It is normally found at depths of 2500 feet, and moves
very quickly. A kill of this evil creature is worth 144736.84 points for
a 38th level character. It can breathe fire, and is also magical,
casting spells which teleport its prey, cause serious wounds, paralyse
its prey, induce blindness, summon the undead, slow its prey or drain
mana; 1 time in 3. It has an armor rating of 125 and a maximized life
rating of 75d40. It can move invisibly, open doors, pass through walls,
kill weaker creatures and pick up objects. It cannot be charmed or
slept. It is ever vigilant for intruders, which it may notice from 400
feet. It may carry up to 16 objects or treasures. It can hit to shoot
flames with damage 10d12, trample to attack with damage 8d12, and touch
to absorb charges. Killing one of these wins the game!

(Question: if you could open doors AND pass through walls, would you
bother with the former? ;)

You probably forgot to dump all your wands and staffs. The Balrog gains
hit points for every charge he drains. Nine potions of invulnerability
should be enough for you to fight the Balrog to the death if he doesn't
gain too many hit points.

Have you read the Moria wizard's chronicle (I don't remember the actual
name)? It's the fiction/prose story that tells the first-person account of
a Moria mage that learns how to kill Emperor Lich's, Evil Iggy's, and
eventually the Balrog? It's been almost a decade since I last read it, and
I don't know if it's on the internet anywhere.

Anyways, the story mentions how if you cast Word of Destruction with
Balrog close to you, the Balrog will actually teleport off the level and
leave you alone for the length of your stay at that level.

There are two such series: Wizard's Quest and Scribe's Journal.

http://groups.google.com/groups?safe=images&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&as_ugroup=rec.games.moria&as_usubject=wizard%27s%20quest&lr=&hl=en

http://groups.google.com/groups?safe=images&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&as_ugroup=rec.games.moria&as_usubject=scribe&lr=&hl=en

The Wizard's Quest is missing chapter 14, and the Scribe's Journal is
missing the final battle against the Balrog; if anyone has either of
them, please re-post.

Do you have the entire thing archived? If so, could you send it to me to be
included in the stories section at http://roguelikedevelopment.org?

Unfortunately, I didn't save my archive of the Wizard's Quest when I
left graduate school. You can get all but chapter 14 from Google, and I
can probably recreate chapter 14 if it doesn't show up.

It seems to be missing both 14 and 21. I've downloaded the Wizard's Quest
and put among the Roguelike Stories that I've collected at my webpage. The
entire thing can be found here:
