Could someone post a good way to kill this bastard (with all the respect
that I have for him), with a mage halfling or a ranger half-elf ?
Thanks in advance for your precious help.

Collect runes of protection and recite one when he comes charging at you.
Also, wands of drain life work very nicely on him, so save them up for
this battle.

~ Rich Adams [DNRC] Women move in strange and mysterious ways.
~ ri...@alpha.delta.edu I can never find any of my stuff after
~ sp...@genie.geis.com they have moved it.
The most common way seems to be:
2 rings of speed
Lots of Rune of Protection
Lots of Potion of Invunerability
Resistance Armour
some Resist Heat potions
Some Healing
A DF or preferably a HA
No wands of Staffs (He drains them to get hitpoints)
Quaff Potion of Invunerability
Cast 'Haste self'
Wack him in the head
Remember to quaff new potions as the old wears out
Reapeat until He's dead.
If you read rune of protection he will hit you less often (having
invunerability, this really doesn't matter.
The major needs are speeditems (at least one, but the more the better) and
a reasonable weapon. At Balrog level thats the way to do it :-)

Ack!!!! Horribly inefficient, and dangerous considering that Big B can
break down a Rune without too much trouble. Also, you don't want to risk
letting Big B drain the wands to get better.
Depending on your speed, you might try Hasting yourself to become faster
than it, then fight-backup-fight (n.b.: remember that Big B might
breathe...). In any event, ditch all non-essential rechargables or use
them before melee. Have a big SE or HA that you can swing 3 or 4 times a
round at it. Collect more than 10 Invuln. potions if it can outrun you.
Have an item of RF and a few potions of Resist Heat for when you run out
of Invuln.
BTW: Since my server seems to be unreliable, I'll ask again: has anyone
taken down Big B without using any Speed items? I'm guessing that a beef
1/2 Troll with about 18 Invulns and some RF and Healings could do it with
a Claymore (HA) (etc) (+1*, +15 or greater damage) might... I'd also take
a Mage using nothing but Haste Self, but that's less of a disadvantage
than no speed at all.

Can't go any faster than Very Fast. That's the balrog's move. The other
problem: my character has 307 hp, Ring of Lordly Protection (FIRE),
Defender sword, and armor of Resistance, and at full hp, the Balrog
breathed once and I died. I don't think Resist Heat would have helped
much.

With fire resistance, the Balrog's breath at full HP takes off 333 hp.
With extra temporary resistance, the Balrog's breath will only take off
111 hp max.

It doesn't show any faster at the bottom of the screen, but you can go
very very very fast--two rings of speed, boots of speed and temporary
speed. Of course you'll probably wait very very very long for those
boots of speed.

That ring of lordly protection (FIRE) was a waste. permanent resistance
items aren't cumulative. You already had RF from your DF or armor of
resistance--3 permanent RF = 1 permanent RF. Either a spell of resistance
or a potion of resistance would have given you 1/9 damage instead of 1/3
damage to that flame breath.

Interestingly enough, I found a Windows version of Moria on a web site
the other day - it seems to play OK, although you can't import your
version 5.X save files into it, which is a shame...

Hmm... well in my old version of moria it is possible to bash the Balrog
to stun him! so my 40th level (190 lb) paladin only needs to get one hit
on the B to have him pretty much finished. Although, the secret may be the
speed items...
I do miss completely sometimes and with no speed the bash stategy would fail.
It may not be what you asked but I have beaten the Balrog close to death
with only speed items and an amulet of the magi. I guess I must have kept
some armour of Resist fire .. I can't remeber now that I think of it.
Maybe I used a potion of RF...
Retired that character by running at the Balrog with no items. It breathes.

While my level 40 ranger owns a (+13 +12) HA Zweihander (4d6), I
have found that the most effective way to kill the Balrog is to stock
up on the following 4 items:
1. Invulnerability potions
2. Runes of Protection
3. Wands of Coldball
4. Staffs of Dispel Evil
Highly recommended, although not necessary are two rings of speed and
some means of getting to speed level 4 (i.e. very very fast).
The concept is to teleport away from the Balrog into a nice big room
and lay out a 5x5 pattern of runes of protection/glyphs of warding.
When the Balrog enters the room, quaff an Invulnerability potion. You
will then stand on the opposite side of the room with the five by five
(or whatever size) grid between you and Mr. B
If you have a direct shot, use Coldball. If you dont, use Dispel
Evil. You will have more direct shots than you might originally think
because the Balrog will invariably start breaking down runes, but
while the Balrrog is occupied doing this, it will be stationary.
Hope you live to "Ripe old age."
