I got a ps2 a few weeks ago but i can't find any rpgs i like. They're
mostly a huge linear game with bad storylines... basically like a Steven
Spielberg movie =D

I've heard Toruneko's Grand Adventure 3 is sorta like nethack, but i can't
find any information on it other than its only available in japan right
now.

So are there any roguelikes for consoles? (or at least non-linear/random
level rpgs)

If you don't like linear games you might want to consider reselling
your PS2 because most console games are linear...

I think there once was a port of Darkstone (kind of a 3d Diablo clone)
to some console or another. Darkstone wasn't exactly thrilling in my
opinion, though. Other than that, I wouldn't know anything with
random levels. There's a port of Gauntlets Legends (3d Gauntlet) for
every console but it's more of an action game... and not random.

Well, i've only got problems with the rpgs... most of the other genres have
great games for the system.

I guess i'll get torneko: the last hope, seems as close to a roguelike as
you can get on a console.

Buy yourself a PC. You should be able to buy an old 486 for a couple
dozen bucks.

I doubt whoever made that page would find the humor in my post since he
lists Azure dreams, Torneko: the last hope and Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon
I & II as roguelikes for the psx.

So maybe having one for the ps2 isn't such a crazy/stupid idea.

Certainly not. Me, I'd like to know if there are any for GBA. I've
seen a tiny bit of Tactics Ogre, which is kind of neat and very
vaguely roguelike.

Well, Xbox has keyboard... if it had internet connection (I don't know if it
does) *shrug* what a strange idea... some 8 year old kid with his Dunadain
paladin killing AMCDs...

I've played Tactics Ogre for some time, and I didn't find anything
similar to roguelikes in it. It's more like turn based strategies like
X-COM or Jagged Aliance.

Prophet Nico <n1...@SPAMrogers.com> consulted the bones and whispered:

Dreamcast had the Evolution series which is vaguely rogue-like. You already
mentioned Azure Dreams for PSX which runs on a PS2 and is more or less a
roguelike. Diablo was released for PSX and I consider it a pretty close
cousin to roguelikes. Someone else mentioned DarkStone which is essentially
a Diablo clone. I could have sworn there was some other game like Azure
Dreams.. hmm.. there was something called Jade Cocoon which for some reason
strikes me as being a cross between a roguelike and pokemon. Scary, I know.
I don't know of any roguelikes specifically designed for the PS2 ... yet.
However, there's a ton of RPGs coming out so someone's bound to do
something that will appeal to you eventually.

I've Gauntlet Legends for N64, but it sux... It's fun for a while (read: one
week) but it gets boring really soon. There's no randomness, millions of
mindless monsters who all look the same and a bad background story...

Afaik, there's no really good rpg/roguelike game for any console... :-(

Dark Cloud for PS2 is a fun little RL - but the designers tried to throw
in a few annoying features that restrict freedom (mandatory challenge
levels for one). It has a sequel called Dark Chronicle coming out soon
which looks like a big improvement.

Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance is also a pretty little dungeon hack, though I
haven't invested any real time into it so I can't say that it remains fun
after the first few hours.

It's the closest I've seen so far. The best part about it is that the
combat proceeds at a quicker pace than most console RPG's. I
disqualify most roguelike wannabees based on the fact that they're too
darn slow.

Everquest for PS2 (I was lucky enough to be in the beta) certainly
looks as if it will be much more friendly for characters who wish to
solo than the PC version is. The combat can be monotonous, but you
can't beat it for running around and finding stuff to kill, it also
has nice depth to the available items. Combine that with all the
different starting locations...of course you're going to pay ~15 bucks
a month when you could just play ToME..

It doesn't, IMHO.
