I've been trying really hard to be patient and figure out
on my own what the following Pool Messages indicate. I'm
especially curious as to which of them mean that nothing
has happened and which of them mean that something has
happened. As far as I can tell, none of them have any effect.

Great! Pure dwarven ale!
This water tastes bitter.
Wow! Pure beer!
You feel exhausted.
You feel slightly strengthened.
You feel translucent.
You suddenly remember your early youth.
Your blood seems to cool down.
Your outfit suddenly looks much cleaner.

I have guesses. For instance, perhaps the "You feel slightly strenghened."
message indicates that my chances of having a strength bonus when
I next go up a level have been increased. There just doesn't seem
to be any way of verifying this to myself without asking.

Anyway, hints and spoilers will be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

I believe this is lowered Con. I seem to remember monsters giving this
message after draining me.

Invisablility (sp?)

This may be a fountain of youth effect. I haven't played since I beat 8.0
on a whim, but I seem to remember a poition of youth saying something like
this.

>Your blood seems to cool down.

This removes intrinsic fire resistance. I had this happen once and was very
annoyed.

You mean [To]ughness no? In any case, the message for (-1 to [To]) is
"It seems that you are getting a cold."
I really don't think any of the messages I asked about have any immediate
effect on the 9 primary stats. (St, Le, Wi, Dx, To, Ch, Ap, Ma, Pe)

The message for invisibility is:
"Suddenly you are gone."
Now I can't positively say that I've ever gotten the
"You feel translucent."
message when I'm visible, so its possible that the message
is only given when you are already invisible and simply
increases the time that the effect lasts. What do you think?

The message that indicates that unnatural aging has been reversed is:
"You feel younger! You suddenly feel young!"
Now maybe its not possible to become younger than your natural age.
If so, then the

"You suddenly remember your early youth."

message, might indicate that nothing happened because you were already
as young as possible. Any thoughts?

That makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for the help.

`Great! Pure dwarven ale!
`Wow! Pure beer!

Most of the normal potions of booze don't seem to do anything either.

`Your blood seems to cool down.

This one is slow poison.

I have no idea about the rest.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

> Great! Pure dwarven ale!

Exactly that. Too much makes you drunk.

> This water tastes bitter.

Poison (but you were already poison resistant).

> Wow! Pure beer!

Low-powered version of dwarve ale.

> You feel exhausted.

After this one it's pretty likely that you strength will be lowered a
few times (whenever you advance a level or a certain amount of time
has passed). If you trained a lot it might neutralize those effects
partially or completely.

> You feel slightly strengthened.

Reverse of the one above.

> You feel translucent.

You are already invisible and the duration is prolonged.

> You suddenly remember your early youth.

No effect. If you had suffered from unnatural aging before this would
have been removed (partially or completely).

> Your blood seems to cool down.

No effect. If you had been bleeding that would have stopped (with a
different message).

> Your outfit suddenly looks much cleaner.

You were invisible, had the power to see invisible and your
invisibility is neutralized (if it's coming from some temporary
effect... but not if caused by an item).

Oops. Sorry. I read it wrong. What the other guy said would be quite
correct.

That's because one potion is rarely enough to become drunk. Try some
more.
