Really jonesing for a sci-fi roguelike. Of the ones I've played:

Deadcold:
Could be the top contender. Please, Joseph, give us an update!

Abura Tan:
Theme: good. Stability: not. I wouldn't go as far as the Abura Tan
urbandictionary listing, but I would love more stability.

DoomRL:
Too themed for me.

Steamband:
Is the same as Angband, so it's not that great.
Any others out there I've missed, maybe?

Maybe you should report the crash bugs? I'm sure Michael Blackney (the
author) would fix them.

Too themed?! What's that supposed to mean?

Steamband changed a lot of the Angband mechanics. So it's not really
"the same as Angband".

Yes, Tower of Doom (my game):

Alphaman - very old, postapocaliptic IIRC
Decker - hacker simulator
Xenocide - SF, a bit like DeadCold

Thanks, copx, I'll try that out.

I must have been in a hurry yesterday- your responses bring to light
the shortcomings of my post.

By DoomRL being 'too themed', I mean that it's very, very "Doom". Which
isn't a bad thing, just not something I'd play in the same way I play
ToME. I guess the correct phrase would have been "the wrong theme".

Steamband feels an awful lot like Angband- even Sang and Oang have a
very distinctive family feel. Obviously, since I play ToME, I don't
dislike Steam inherently- I just feel there's nothing I can get from it
that I can't get from ToME.

I will send Michael Blackney my crash bugs (I'm pretty much just
randomly crashing out when I use stairs in XP, is there any way to
collect more info than just this)?

Thanks!

I have a future roguelike game I've played for years, it's called Doomsday
2000 on VMS, Jaunt Trooper: Mission Thunderbolt for the PC, and Mission
Thunderbolt and Mission Firestorm for the MAC. It was written by David
Scheifler.
It has been listed as abandonware.
The graphics are fun, but not obnoxious.
I have played the PC as well as the MAC parts (via emulator) to their
conclusion.
OldIron
P.s. It can be obtained from www.the-underdogs.org.
P.p.s. I don't normally link to sites but here goes:

Because it's intended as a coffee break game ;-). I would like you to
elaborate on why you don't like DoomRL, but I expect the answer "too little
elaborate" (which would be competely valid, but that's something that is not
going to change much).

I don't dislike DoomRL... in fact, it's my most played RL of the past
couple of weeks as I scavenge for something else. Yes, it is a little
light for my tastes; my only serious complaint has more to do with how
I play games (once I find a working combo, i.e. SoaB and Chaingun in a
game, I tend not to explore other paths to victory).

Victory will be harder in future versions. And there will be no killer-combo
anymore. At least I hope so ;-). So from time to time try a new version if
it comes out -- maybe it will suit your play-style.
