In the results of the DCSS survey, I found an interesting section that
mentioned the history of DCSS:

1997-1998, linley's dungeon crawl
1999-2002, original dungeon crawl
2003-2005, before stonesoup (4.0.0 beta 26)

As a recently addicted RL fan, all I know about is Dungeon Crawl Stone
Soup. I have played other roguelikes, but I am wondering about the
history of DCSS.

From what I can gather, Linley's dungeon crawl was abandoned and picke
back up by others? What is the version history here, possibly with
download links? I would be interested to play the older versions.

Thanks!

Charles a crit :

Since we're at it, I think

crawl -version should give which version of
crawl is being used :)

I'm with Charles here; I would especially be interested in seeing a copy
of Crawl 4.1 Alpha, an attempted continuation/rewrite of 4.0.0 beta 26
(I think). I tried googling around for it a while ago, but I don't
think it was ever really made public.

I am curious to see if 4.1 is as unbeatable as its reputation suggests.

Did you read the section about history in the manual? You can get there
while playing them game if you press ?L or so. (Type ? and look at the
table of contents.)

You can play it on the CDO server: telnet crawl.develz.org 345
There has been a single win by syllogism. The game is as unbalanced as
they say, but it goes both way. There should be ttyrec of syllogism's
winning game (which was on CAO) somewhere around. Go to the ##crawl
channel on freenode and ask around, someone will know.
