General hints

Always check your SELF panel - if you wear a ring and the resistance
doesn't show
it is a ring of delusion - dump it.

look for wierd fumes to get your # of fingers to 16 and eyes to 5
let it envelope you -do not kill it- you need a blessed cure for each new
finger/eye
you gain to eliminate vertiginous caused by flume.

one way to start
choose Sage as first class
write a scroll of switch bodies
become a Draugr
first reach level 10 so that you can write scrolls
make a BACKUP of your save-file
search for the 'teleport star' that takes you to slater's sea
get Skidblanir
go north to River Gjoll(I think)
on the right side inside the fog is the entrance to Niflheim
go west into Nirdavellir
look out for a Draugr and read the scroll
choose Viking as your next class, because you need fighting skill
you can raise your strength above .99 each 10 viking levels
boost up your AC by blessing rings of agility(+100 is max.)
another possibility is to get your luck to 100 and then wish for a
+99 ring of agility then use a blessed scroll of recharging on your wand
then one more scroll of blessing...+100 agility
make sure that you donĀ“t overcharge your wand of wishing(max is 5 charges)
all other classes are not important, you can get the skills via scroll of
knowledge

Another way is to start as a blacksmith and switch to a sage after you
reach the master class blacksmith.

Good luck

Finished the game, but I *still* couldn't get this.

1. Can a scroll of knowledge grant the swimming ability/skill?
2. If not, how about a blessed scroll of wonder? This, BTW, can give the
*best* version of the Relocation skill, because it also makes you immune
to outside teleports (like Scyld's, or sentinels).
3. I was in draugr form for most of the game (my gods, that form is
devastating!!!); did this *eliminate* the possibility of gaining swimming?
4. Failing the first 2, then it sounds like you have to rely on polymorphing.

Or am I missing something? Please, I *don't* want vague, subtle hints, or
references to the various WWW pages and FAQs. They don't address this.

Oh: I even went thru the stash of knowledge scrolls up in Asgard; none of
them granted swimming.

>Classes Skills/Powers
>
>Viking Weaponmaster
>Sage Writing
>Conjurer Spellcasting, Fennling, Relocation
>Blacksmith Ironwork
>Woodsman Fletching, Taming, Bow-Fighting
>Alchemist Alchemy

IMO: the 5 most useful abilities are Weaponmaster, Writing, Relocation, Alchemy,
and Fennling (the ability to transfer charges from one wand to another). More
or less in that order. Spellcasting can be fun, and useful at times. Ironworking
is only valuable in a *very* narrow time frame, IMO, unless you like shurikens
and want to make a large batch (then bless em all up at once). The runesword *is*
nice, tho, until you can get Hela's scythe.

The order of classes I personally like: Sage, then Conjurer. Yes, in combat
you're lousy. But, Fennling and Relocation are very handy (Locus Mastery
is one of the essential rings for me). The third class depends on the luck
you've had with knowledge and enchantment scrolls. Give me a +20 katana, and I'm
probably not gonna worry about either weaponmaster or blacksmith for a while.
I'll go for alchemist. No enchantment scrolls, no knowledge scroll giving
Ironworkng skill, and it's a tossup between viking and blacksmith now.

Vanseril and Nidhogg are *nasty*. If you're having problems, go around
them until you get Hela's scythe.

One thing I really really dislike: the disperser helm looks like a helmet
until it's identified. Even wearing it, all you get is 'a +0 helmet' or
similar. Haven't found the Helm of Knowledge, but it probably has the same
feature.

Amulets have a similar problem, but at least putting them on will let you know.
BTW: Destruction scrolls are wonderful for dealing with amulets of holding. :)

This has a limit; it stops working around level 25.
Same with potions of experience.

>Potions
>Name normal blessed

The list presented doesn't mention the hybrid potions, all of which grant
interesting, and useful, abilities. To make them, you must have the
Alchemist skill; otherwise, you're creating a random effect every time.

The potions needed to make the hybrids are random. Very often, they include
the bad potions (like Venom and Blindness). This is why I consider Alchemy
an important skill...to get rid of the excess junk potions I have. :)

Potions I keep immediately available: Invulnerability, Curing (b), often
1 Rejuv. Speed and Phasing sometimes, but usually they stay in my red bag.

Beware: rangers don't like Extinction scrolls.
Of course, if you're up to it, ranger slaughtering can be a great way to
gain LOTS of good items (got 2-3 enchantment scrolls, 1-2 knowledge,
AND the transport scroll), and lots of XP. Yes, it's cheesy. Yes, it's
vile. Yes, they should penalize your morality, or do *something*. But
ohmigosh is it effective. Just don't do it somewhere that you are gonna want
to travel thru quickly later.

>transport takes you to the Bazaar

This scroll seems VERY rare.

>wishing you may make a wish(can be recharged
>with blessed s.o.r.)

Note: the wand *can* be destroyed each time it's recharged. It's best
to use the charge when it's loaded in. It has a charge limit as well.

(My WoW self-destructed trying to charge it when it only had 3 charges, and
the charge limit others have stated was 5. Next time, it's going to
stay at 1 charge. Don't want it at 0, in case of an accident when using a diff
wand.)

For the most part, you can get by with about 10 fingers. If you
can get 1-2 extra fingers and extra eyes WITHOUT getting Vertiginous,
I'd take it and kill the fume. (If you want more fingers, find
another fume later.) You become Confused fairly regularly,
and this can be a major, major problem at the wrong time.

Music skill can be picked up more easily, with a hybrid potion.
Easier that way, and one reason I go for Alchemist fairly quickly.
Several of the hybrids are useful.

But I consider this to be a form of cheat. Using a backup file is one
thing; still a cheat, but a lesser form, IMO. This is more significant.
I've done similar things, I'll admit; restoring to a previous game if
my wand of wishing accidentally blows up on a recharge, for example. The
thing I really dislike is that there *should* be a way to win the game
without a) cheating like hell, or b) going on and on and on forever
in a game that is *supposed* to have a time limit, until you just happen
to get lucky.

Started up a new character, intending to get to true kick-butt levels.
Got *real* lucky, found the wand of wishing at 10 meters!!! So I had
my +20 (and then some :)) katana.

BTW: Side note to Andrew. It is considered bad form to quote long
blocks of material with no commentary. If possible, delete the stuff
you're not responding to, so you don't waste bandwidth and everyone's time.

Here are some ideas that might help you survive the first few levels:
1. If you get caught in a sticky situation like quicksand or a flood
trap, use a scroll of traveling or a wand of displacement on yourself.
Likewise if you are in a situation with really nasty monsters that you
can't win. I go around wearing the ring of relocation, which teleports
you at random, but witha ring of locus mastery, you can control it somewhat.
2. To fight the really nasty monsters, such as Aspenth and the one that
guards Mimming, I use potions of invulnerability (being an alchemist for
the first part of the game is a good idea). I have had no luck with
Jorumgand yet.
3. The red bag protects your potions and scrolls from being destroyed,
and other stuff from being stolen.
4. The heat radiation skill is good for a secitt fight, or other
situations when you are surrounded, and can be quite fun. It runs out
after a while, so you have to make another potion.
5. Eating a dead glard makes you immune to poison.
6. A blessed identification scroll identifies everything in your pack.

Now I have a question I hope somebody knows about:
Is it possible to grow back missing fingers that get cut off by rings
during polymorphing? Blessed curing doesn't seem to work.

let a wierd flume envelope you and you get extra eyes and fingers, but
remember each time it envelopes you you need to drink a blessed cure to
get rid of being confused.

or you can hex edit your save game for 15 fingers.

Don't expect to. Not, at least, until you are *sooo* badass that
you trigger monster traps, and hope for 20 Hel dragons to fight, just
to have a challenge.

If you're having *any* problems with Vidur, Aspenth, etc., you are not
even *close* to this kinda level.

BTW, you can finish the game w/o getting up to this kinda level.

And it holds *tons* of stuff.

Hmm...never tried it. Yes, you can burn it out by using it too much.
Same with terraforming. Never had that problem with dimension travel, tho.

Eating a dead anskk can also be useful.

>5. Eating a dead glard makes you immune to poison.

The best way to go, early on. Identify a *lot* of things all at once.

A weird fume allows you to grow new fingers and eyes. It's the blue
cloud thingy found in the forest.

I have found an excellent strategy which nearly always wins, and quickly too. I call it the 'time stop' technique. Start as a sage and wait till you get to level 13 which allows you to write a time stop scroll. On reaching lev 20 become an alchemist and create a potion of dimension travel. Never, but never, polymorph yourself, since there is no telling what you will become!
Time stop scrolls (TSS) allow you to...
1) Not bother with the (heavy) green stone. Simply read a TSS when you meet Scyld
2) Combine with phasing (if you're not ethereal) to travel to Nidavellir and/or Jotenheim from the forest and simply kill Uorik/Gymir while time is stopped!
3) All the denizens of Niflheim can be picked off one by one. You can stop time whilst in the crossroads, so read your TSS before travelling to Niflheim and dispatching at your leisure. Obviously you'll need a decent weapon though.
4) Sealed rooms and monster traps can also be sorted out with a TSS.
5) I agree, swimming is a bugger. Bit of a weak point in this excellent game, because no, you don't always acquire that skill. However, it just makes it that bit harder to win, but it is possible. Neither do you need ansolutely ALL the gods' weapons, but better if you do.
