my spriggan stalker found a dagger of pain on a goblin. The description
says something along the lines of 'may cause extra pain if wielded by
somebody with necromantic skill' which the stalker didn't have.

Also, the weapon appeared grey in the equipped slot, yet it _did_ on
occasion trigger when I tried it out.

Now what I am really curious about is: would using that dagger actually
end up training necromancy?

Just wondering. The little guy actually starved to death, ONE loaf of
bread found between DL4 and DL11 was just not enough ... by the time I
got to 'nearly starving' I started diving and blitzing levels for food,
but to no avail. Meh. First time _that_ has happened to me. I'm miffed
about it because he had half way decent gear, good attributes and a nice
distribution of skills. :-\

Trigger frequency and damage are proportional to skill - it's a pretty
useless brand for you.

No. You'll need to find another way to train the skill - consider branching
out into necromantic magic.

Remember that potions have some nutritional value; also, you can make food
last a lot longer by avoiding high-level spells.
